What is your name? Where does it come from? What does it mean?
Names come and go in popularity. In the 1960s it became popular to name children with an Irish name. But what exactly are Irish names? And are they authentic?
A new book ‘Gaelic Personal Names’ by University College Cork Professor Donnchadh Ó Corráin and his wife Fidelma Maguire looks at Irish names, their origin and meaning.
The reference book contains almost a thousand Irish names, some of which have their origins as far back as the early medieval period. The book is a useful resource in tracing family roots and for seeking out unique Irish names for a new family member.
Reporter Pat Butler meets the authors and chats to them about the book. Fidelma describes the book as a collection of about 1,000 Irish names which go back centuries. While researching the book Fidelma notes that it was easier to find men’s names than women’s. The societies of the time were dominated by men and it is men’s names that are on record. Female names were however found in the text ‘A History of the Great Women of Ireland’.
Donnchadh Ó Corráin describes what constitutes an Irish name and comments,
There was no Irish man before the year 1200 who was called Patrick
Many names have their roots in paganism and mythology.
They provide many examples of names which are generally perceived to be Irish are not.
This episode of ‘Ireland’s Eye’ was broadcast on 10 February 1981.

I live in the UK and all my paperwork has James on it instead of Seamus and it causes untold aggro everywhere I go. You try explaining to an english person who already doesn't trust anyone least of all the Irish that your name is James but youve been called Seamus your whole life. It causes ructions and they expect you to change your name to suit them. They just dont realise a good Paddy never knows when he's fucked.

@@deanodog3667 because its my given name but when you go to an all Gaelic school in 1960s Ireland they teach everything in Gaelic so youre learning your native language at the same time as every other subject. They also translate your name into Gaelic and call you by that name so I've been called Seamus my whole life.

Fascinating! For me as a Breton, it reminds me of how in our grandparents' day, you could visit a village where everyone was called Marie-Joseph or Joseph-Marie, and today their descendants all have 'traditional' Celtic/Brythonic names instead.

German people have always been very popular in Ireland Michael. Back in the seventies they came for the music definitely not for the weather and I always enjoyed meeting them in pubs or when they were hitch-hiking. Furthermore the people in Mayo and on Achill Island in particular were very fond of "Henry Ball" as they used to call him. Scenery-wise Kerry is a lovely place to settle.

@@brosnaboy there are many connections between Ireland and Germany... Irish monks (Kilian, Gallus etc.) have brought the Christian faith to the pagan Saxons... the Kaiser supported the Irish freedom struggle against the english occupation with weapons.... Ireland was the first country who played a football game with postwar Germany.... Irish farmers delivered the starving Germans with food... therefore the German national football team wearing a green Away kit..... During the troubles there have been many IRA supporters in Germany ( sorry for this)... Sadly some Germans supported Irish IRA members in attacks of British Army members in Germany in the British sector in the 70s and 80s. In the common opinion Ireland is the most popular country for Germans... nearly everyone is keen to spent a holiday in Ireland... and NI belongs to the Irish there should be a nation once again..... What can I say we love the Irish.... ❤️🇨🇮🤗

Ireland has what, less than 100K Muslims? Compared to that neighbour you hate, not exactly a popular place for people called ‘Mohommed’ and I can see why.

All cultures absorb elements from others. Common Indian/Pakistani names: Patel, Quereshi etc are well known and loved in England. Over decades, some spellings change. The name 'Wilson', now regarded as English, is Scandinavian. Common current Irish surnames also have continental roots. To survive, cultures need new infusions.

Very tricky trying to understand some of what the gentleman is saying. Something like, “ ...and the definition of a ‘Donie’ is a man trying to find his way up a. Xxxx.” And at the punchline, he swallows the word. Ffs, what was he saying?

A down escalator. He really doesn't swallow the words, he just uses some uncommon words in an accent you mightn't be used to.

True to an extent but these are two experts talking on their field of expertise, you'll find many of those still today if you look in the right places. If the interviewer had asked any fella off the street the same questions then he'd be unlikely to get anywhere near as intellectually sound and articulate responses.
