012 - Population Ecology
In this video Paul Andersen explains how population ecology studies the density, distribution, size, sex ration, and age structure of populations. Intrinsic growth rate and exponential growth calculations are included along with a discussion of logistic growth. K-selected and r-selected species are explained along with survivorship curves.

I don't comment too often, but thank you Mr. Anderson. People and educators like you help the world so much, and just having one good teacher ins something can provide a spark of interest in a topic for many students. Almost anyone can have a great teacher in their lives thanks to someone like you and it's just great. thanks

Thank you very much Mr. Anderson - Bozeman Science, for the videos you've shared here in KZfaq. I used those as references as part of my online class instruction and helped me explain the concept of topics that I discuss with the class. I never re-posted your video as not to infringe copyright. Thank you very much, the student understood the topics easy-peasy.

Right now processing A LOT of information at once, and so might have to rewatch more than once to fully absorb because you gave A LOT to process, very concisely. But I hope you continue to make these videos accessible to people because I believe we all should know, as part of deeply knowing ourselves and where we fit into the world, with deep consideration. Thank you!! 🌞💖

I remember when I first learned this back in the 90s. We were still under the sway of “The Population Bomb” and similar fretting about overpopulation. In my high school class the teacher showed the k chart and the r chart, and next to that the human population, leaving us to draw the “obvious” conclusion. A few of us contested, as you did here, that the sigmoid also looks exponential for a while.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that the sea turtles should be a type 3 since most of their young die at the beginning of their lifetime when making their way from the sand into the water.

You are in fact correct. The mortality rate for a sea turtle in their juvenile years is higher, than that of after they have become an adult.
@karanbisht248
@karanbisht248 6 жыл бұрын
this is a survivor ship curve and what you are talking is about are mortality curves. sure many juveniles will die but the no of survivors in that population will not go down as the adults have very long life. so we get the type 1 curve
@siobhanbradley9244
@siobhanbradley9244 5 жыл бұрын
Bit late to this but sea turtles have a type 3 survivorship curve. Not a type 1. Out of all the individuals born in turtle populations only a small percentage of them survive to adulthood, but when they do they have a very low mortality rate when they are adults. Humans have very low mortality rates their entire lives, most babies born today survive to adulthood and with increasingly better healthcare adults live until very old age

Why does the exponential growth equation (Nt=N0e^rt) produce a different population size at a given time than what a spreadsheet produces? If I create a spreadsheet like you did in the other video with the rabbit population, and use an r value of 0.25, my calculations derived from adding the population increase to the population at a given time matches the spreadsheet values exactly. However, when I use the growth rate value of 0.25 and put it into the exponential growth equation (above), a different value is produced. For example, at t=4, the two values produced are 19.53(using the equation) and 21.53(using the spreadsheet or just adding the population increase from t=3).
