The old man speaking on the screen was Do (Marshall Applewhite), leader of the Heaven's Gate cult. Do and his followers got naked, covered themselves in purple cloth triangles, and committed suicide by drinking cyanide, claiming it would enable them to catch a spaceship that was trailing behind the Hale Bop comet, and would take them to a "level of existence above human." The year was 1997, and they had a website that was taken down shortly after the suicides, but not before my friend and I ordered a copy of this informational video, which was delivered to our door, and is what you're seeing on the screen. We watched not out of belief, but out of morbid curiosity about this horrible tragedy. This song reminded me of all that.
