Porsche 2.7 RS and the Pursuit of Purity

Respected architect Jonathan Segal poetically describes what the 1973 Porsche 911 2.7L RS meant both to Porsche and its drivers. Jonathan's career as an architect has developed his pursuit for purity in the structures he creates. One look around Jonathan's studio and garage, and you'll know this isn't just a man cave for rusted signs and pin-up girls-it's a forum, allowing each car to communicate to their viewers. Jonathan's signal-yellow RS demands an audience and it incites him to drive to the redline every time.

There was a wealthy guy I went to high school with who's father had 2 of these. Went to his house, he took me into ine of the garages, and there were two 2.7 RS's, in showroom condition. The bright blue one is exactly what I think of when I hear Porsche or 911 to this day. I can still see that car in my mind. Someday I'll own one or build a replica, hopefully while I'm still young enough to enjoy it...

The pants are a 'pepita' houndstooth fabric, which is an obvious throwback to the early days of Porsche where that material was often used as a seat covering. It's even used on the 911R. He's not wearing them as a fashion statement. It's amazing that so many viewers of a channel like this (which is directed at true auto enthusiasts) don't know the important of Houndstooth for Porsche.

Wonderfull car! To be enjoyed fully both with your eyes opened and closed. Years ago I had the privilege of driving a '85 911 Turbo for some time, planning my route trough as much tunnels as possible, driving with windows open at all times. Spinning the car on a wet road scared me so much i returned it to it's owner the same day ;-) However, driving an older Porsche should be on everyones bucket list. It's so far from "just driving a car". Some day i will take that corner in my own 911..

Working in a car restoration shop. I'd have to say these vehicles for the most part have been restored. To have almost every part of the vehicle look new, it's gotta be restored. If not, the rarity to find one 100% untouched original in that condition goes up 100%

I know Petrolicious is all about cars, but I love when there's a story behind the car, like the E30 M3, Lancia Stratos and Ferrari 512 BBi videos - just to mention a few. How the owner got in love with it, how he manage to buy one, his passion about that specific car. I didn't feel this with this video. Seems like this guy have money and well, he just went and bought a Porsche, restored it and that's it. Not to mention his pants...

I love the Porsche 911 and I hope to own one someday. (Do I buy a new 991 GTS or a low-mileage 993 2S for the same money? So many questions!) Technically, the closest I've come is a pumpkin-orange '71 Volkswagen Super Beetle. I know it sounds funny, but it was the same basic rear-engined, air-cooled, rear-wheel-drive formula, and it was an absolute hoot to drive in snow (gas heater issues aside). Talk about drifting! Not yet in a position to afford the Porsche of my dreams, I've driven the same manual transmission 2005 MINI Cooper R50 since new, and, spiritually, I think it provides me with all the joy Mr. Segal derives from his RS. (Maybe more? Besides their driving characteristics, the first-generation BMW MINI is a design masterpiece. Look at it from a rear corner and observe how the beltline flows with the A-pillar and the dashboard.) That's why I bought it. I've driven my MINI pretty much everywhere in North America and haven't had any issues over-and-above expected wear and tear. With more than 120K well-maintained miles on the clock, I've never been stranded. I've never even had a flat tire! With some minor upgrades it makes a measly sounding 115hp at the wheels (ECU tune, camshaft, intake, ignition, throttle re-map), but it turns like a compass (racing sway bar and 17" wheels with Pilot Super Sports) and sounds great (fully upgraded exhaust system). It checks essentially all the same sensory boxes as the RS does, as described by Mr. Segal. It's still a comparatively slow car (my wife's 328i kills it in a drag race, as I expect so would the RS), but that's not the point; it's in its element on proper driving roads (like the 89/89A between Congress and Jerome, AZ), when the revs are above 5K and you can "drive it like it's stolen". I would love to have a '73 RS--or any 911--and maybe someday I will; but in the meantime, I am so pleased to have a truly engaging driver's car that most people dismiss as "cute". Some people "get" driving cars; most people don't (they're appliances, like a washer, dryer... or a Toyota Camry). What's great is that with cars like mine (and with newer driver-oriented cars like the manual BRZ/FRS) is that the "unwashed masses" can experience essentially the same level of joy afforded by a vintage sports car for a fraction of the price. Obtainable purity.
