Jonny Lieberman had the chance to drive one of these proto-Speedsters alongside the latest and greatest, the 991 GT3-based Speedster. I had the chance to roll race a 1954 Speedster while driving my 2500lb econobox hyundai with 138hp / 6- speed auto. The Speedster actually held it's own fairly well but it didn't have the top end. Crazy how far cars have come. Won't ever forget the ridiculousness of the race.

Everyone quick to complain how slow a beetle is but for whatever reason it doesn’t bother them in the 356 even though it’s basically the same motor... with a few minor tweaks

Perhaps you know by now, because I am replying to a three year old comment, but it is both a 911 speedster and a 991 speedster. 911 is the model of the car and 991 happens to be the particular generation of the car. So it is a 991 911. It is actually the refresh of that generation, so a 991.2 911

man naturally aspirated flat 6 of any iteration just sounds so good when paired with a proper exhaust... regardless of which Porsche it is in (although i do aim to argue that the base 991.1 911 sounds unexciting. Would rather a 981 Cayman S, not 718, for sure... fight me) Its a shame Porsche is under European pressure to kill Natural motors and eventually go EV in 2030

Don't 991.1 Carrera and 981 S share the same engine though? Like you say, it's a lot about the exhaust.

@@lbryan250 they do, but the cayman's engine is literally right behind you rumbling and the noise resonates inside the cabin with or without exhaust (but of course, exhaust makes a big difference). The location of the exahust is also much closer to your ears and tighter together with the car. The 991.1's engine is obviously way further in the back, and the sound feels very very far and distance sounding. 991.1 with the exhaust is okay as a fun GT, but without an exhaust is pretty dull. You are frequently reminded that the sound is leaving your car out the back and feels like its outside rather than resonating for some bits inside the cabin.
