Thanks JayEmm! A very fair review - I think you nailed it with your comments regarding the excitement factor of cars as well developed as this - they are so quick and have such reserves of road-holding that getting anywhere near their limits on the road is an exercise in frustration and antisocial to boot. The tradeoffs in civility probably aren't worth it unless you regularly do track days where I imagine the GT4RS would turn out to really come alive and be truly exciting.

Great review and summary of Porsche’s history related to the Cayman. It looks an amazing car but the problem is there’s so few of them. Difficult to get excited about a car you never see, that’s so inaccessible and inevitably the few that are around will be locked away on garages. Do you think there will ever be a turbo one (like the gt2)?

@@johnsmith1474 I don't think there's nothing wrong with it. Owning special cars does come with its own responsibility. Sharing it with younger enthusiastic audiences. If we want these cars to survive the future, wouldn't it be better to let public see and experience them so they understand why these cars are special, rather than hiding it away? I know firsthand how these kind of cars can change someone else's day. Back in the olden days I often found myself going home from school wanting to kill myself (bullies and all that shit). But a sight of a Ferrari 360 Spider in Grigio Titanio or even just a yellow 987 Boxster is enough to made my day and forgot what happened back at school. This is why as a content creator (car-related stuffs) today, I want to show to everyone that these cars exists not just as a willy-waving exercise but as an object of desire, something that can make someone else's day brighter. None of that is achievable if the car is just chilling inside a hermetically-sealed garage guarded by 10 SAS members.

Always detailed and enjoyable reviews and I always like how we all see the world differently - which is highlighted when I watch many of your Porsche reviews - different perspectives and all that. For example, your comment about the gt4rs interior lacking colour and comparison references to the 430 about how special that looks. To me Ferrari is like that kid at school, perfect teeth, perfect hair, perma tan from winter on the ski slopes and summer in daddy’s place in St Tropez, he’s popular for sure but do you really like him that much? He’s just a bit me me me to ever be a true friend. Ferrari is the ‘fur coat and no knickers’ car - attractive but no class. I see a Ferrari and smile, looks lovely, sounds lovely, but my heart doesn’t ache for one. That’s a car for other people, the Rolex brigade (you know the sorts, some people buy a Rolex because it truly is an amazing watch, many buy it because it’s a Rolex. Rolex screams ‘look at me’ and so does Ferrari - me me me. I look at the gt4rs interior and see beauty, class, form and function. It’s Tudor or Omega to Ferrari’s Rolex. The component parts aren’t just there for aesthetics, there’s a purpose which might even damage the aesthetics, but that is beauty in its own way. It’s not me me me, it’s you you you. It stirs my soul like a Ferrari never does. Different opinions are of course a great thing - if we all wanted to marry the same person there’d be one very popular individual and a hell of a lot of very lonely people.

I've read in other articles that Porsche said they would build the combustion engine cars for 2-years in parallel with the EV variant coming out. The mid engine internal combustion engine in the Cayman may still have one last gasp of breath. Haven't driven a 911 but once I put some camber into the front end of the 718 with bigger wheels front and rear, the 718 is way more adjustable at the track. Love my 718 S!

A really good review, and brief history lesson :) I particularly like how you're constructively critical about these so called amazing cars, as so many journo's just won't do this, they miss out criticisms. Being a long time Porsche GT owner I see this alot. Just one thing though James, please could you record the noise better INSIDE the cabin. The shots you do to show the noise don't work at all, no one will hear this car with their head stuck to the outside bodywork near the exhaust with all the wind noise too, it's not representative of anything. You need to get set your mic's up inside the cabin to record the ambient noise as that's representative of what the driver will hear. And as you know, GT cars including this one sound incredible as you're driving.

I like the difference your commentary brings. You spend a lot of time actually driving the car on backroads which relates to more of how I drove. I say how I drove as I have since moved out of Connecticut where I drove my Porsche 993 Cab rarely getting above 4th gear over great backroads for 10 years, roads probably similar to yours. I'm not interested in racing a car, just a great backroads car. I especially like your comparison of the GT4RS to the new Lotus Emira. Those who only read and comment without ever owning a great road car will most likely have no idea how you can say that, but I do.

What a great history and review, spot on as always on all fronts. For the same money I went for the 991.2rs WP, which looks better. Can never quite get over the rear end of the cayman, the spyder trumps it on all days as far as rear end goes. Like u said I can get into a lot of truly exotic cars in this range so this def won’t be a top choice unless u are a midengine porsche aficionado. I would be tempted if the new spyder rs lands coz it prob looks way better, but it all depends how inflated it gets. 250-300k? Not a chance

Very good review. I have this car as of two weeks ago. I paid list and I have 4 track days booked. The fact that I was someone who was going to drive it as such was one of the reasons I got an allocation. No dodgy deals, have just bought 4 cars from Porsche previously over the last 6 years, so a reasonable customer. I dare say were I in the market for a "special" Ferrari I would have had to jump through many, many more hoops and spent many, many more pounds. For me, this is the perfect drive to and then onto the track car, the perfect Sunday morning in the Brecon Beacons car: its combines emotion, engineering precision and in the right conditions, epic high-speed fun from an engine that I genuinely believe is one of the all-time greats. It's not a car for every day and Preuninger did not design it as such. Sell mine? No chance. I'm having far too much fun for that.

About six weeks into ownership of my 4RS so far... I agree with many of your points, but on the PDK aggressiveness, etc, I think the car just begs to be driven in manual mode, motorway or not. Well, I'm relieved that I don't have to cancel my order, given it's already built and scheduled to arrive in the first part of June! So, thanks for that! Even though the Ferrari and Lamborghini posters were all over the wall when I was a kid, the reality is that they are too shouty for me as well as not delivering the reliability and daily usability of the Cayman/Boxster platform. Perhaps my GT4 RS will be an exception but it WILL be driven on a near daily basis, mostly on roads and occasionally on the track. As for Lotus, the Emira definitely looks the part of a supercar (which to me is a bit of a disadvantage albeit one that I might be able to overlook) but I live in fear of the reliability of it, particularly in light of the weak dealer network in the US. I wish it were different. I hope it will be different this time...but hope isn't much of a strategy.

As to the Toyota V-6, it's probably going to be reliable but engines are far from the only things that break. It's also still a pretty vanilla engine for such a special car.

Ok. I'm good. Phew. Hope old mate with his caravan in the hedge is ok. Great review. Loved every second. I can't believe UK base spec doesn't even have park sensors or rear camera. And lack of advanced safety systems is only barely acceptable based on considerable % track use likely.

Can you put the best lotus convertible with the 981 boxster gts and a third convertible of your choice + the 360 spider + R8 + 650s + Gallardo all in spider form in a one video review, from cheapest to the most expensive, give us your thoughts about each of them the + and the - and what is the level of enjoyment we get for the price we paid, sorry this request is not related to this video, I don’t know why but as a convertible lover I always consider those cars

Nice review, but…. James, you have to understand, none of the cars that you mentioned in the same price range are able to be pounded on a track day in and day out and survive. I see them all the time, pretty much every weekend I’m at a track day, The Ferraris and Lambos are over-heating their brakes or ending up in a cloud of steam. Taking it relatively easy on a British B-road is a really, really, really bad way to review the GT4RS. The lads at EVO and Harry did the same mistake. Of all the cars you mentioned as an alternative, they will be more charismatic on a B-road, but when you’re barreling down into Turn 17 at Sebring, charisma ain’t on your mind, a lightweight, precise, technical machine with plenty of power is what you need. The issue with some reviews of the GT4RS is akin to saying a Lotus just isn’t that thrilling because its not a good off-roader because you like off-roading and you have a lot of dirt roads near you. You’re using the wrong environment to test a track car. The GT4RS is a track car that you can drive on smooth public roads, rather than a road car that you can take to the track. It’s character comes out on a track. I think the GT4RS is for a specific sub-set of enthusiasts, those that are on a track regularly. It’s a cold, harsh, technical, precise thing. You know, a race car. You’re expecting it to be a charismatic road car, which it’s not intended to be. Exchange your string-back, 1960’s leather driving gloves for a pair of Nomex OMP gloves, a helmet instead of a flat cap, and you’ve got it. From that standpoint, the cars you mentioned are overly dramatic, overly unreliable for the job at hand. That job is to get around the track, as quickly as possible, consistently lap after lap, without a mechanical setback, for an entire day. It’s a racing athlete’s car, not a punters (well, unless you’re a punter who’s play-acting at being a track star). It’s the STIG’s car, not Jeremy’s.

End of the line for the Cayman. Agree Porsche missed a golden opportunity to dump the rear engine layout. Ruf CTR3 and Clubsport showed how easily the Cayman platform could have been adapted for hypercar power. It is more Porsche than any current Porsche will ever be.

I actually met an engineer who developed a 981 prototype with the GT3 engine and manual transmission... called it a 981 touring. Tested it in Europe and Los Angeles for over 100K miles and raced it the VLN as well
