Rebuilding a Porsche 915 Transaxle, or Transmission. As you take things apart it is a good time to look for wear and damage. Then it's clean, clean, and more cleaning.
We use a green cleaner with oil-eating enzymes. Some of the aluminum parts are ok to blast and polish. But with Magnesium, it is best to not remove the protective finish. Oh, and then some more cleaning.
Read all about this teardown in our article,
www.klassikats.com/index.php/...
In the next video lesson, we will cover the Input or Main Shaft. Breaking it down further, and re-assembling it with new parts installed.
Video is for entertainment purposes, please Porsche responsibly.

Very good instructional video with a bonus of description of when replacement of worn parts are necessary. Wish you were leading the introduction of the then new 915 gearbox in 72 that I attended when working for a dealer.

Greetings from SoCal. 964 Owner. Whoever owns that transmission won the lotto having you tear down and do rebuild. Not your first rodeo. 👍. Great video series. 👍

Does it help to mark anything for positioning when it comes to removing the sliders? I notice you also leave as many in tact when possible if there’s no damaging wear. As an alternative to sycro wear what else do u typically see on the sliders that prevent getting into gear?

I dont mark anything when i disassemble. Yes i do get assemblies out and on the bench, but i do come back and disassemble each one, (videos to follow soon). There are two main areas of wear on the sliders. The areas are the dog teeth and the hump/valley on the inside of the slider. The dog teeth are pretty easy to see and damage is usually obvious. The slider also has a small hump and valley built into the inside I/D of it. Its purpose is twofold. The humped area adds more pressure to synchro ring to help slow it faster. The valley in the center of the slider helps hold the slider engaged into the gear. When inspecting you need to look at both areas and replace if either one is worn. The most common reason for being unable to engage a gear is worn, (squared off), dog teeth. When the dog teeth loose their pointed tooth angle, the slider and the gear can stall against each other and not move to either side to allow engagement.

How do you ceramic polish parts? I can not find any information on this and your parts are clean af.

You will need a polishing machine that the parts will fit into with the media and soap solution. I use a "Bur Bench" Branded machine Kurt

Hi, I have an 82SC which is stuck in reverse. If I try and shift the car, it seems to be stuck between gears. I had this happen a while back and the Porsche shop did something but now I'm stuck in between gears again. Can this be repaired or do I have to do a complete tear down. I'm here in LA. The car is safe in my garage so there's no hurry. Any suggestion

You will need to find out if it is an internal or external problem first. Good luck with your gearbox. S

Hello Francois, thanks for the compliment. I do not know why we have stayed so small, we have lots of videos, most with low views. The gram is KlassikATS but it is small too! We will keep plugging along and may be someday something will take off. :) S
