Is the Porsche 968 Club Sport really as good as everyone says?
This week TheCarGuys get to spend a week with Ashgood Classic and Sportscars' white and red 99k mile example - a car neither have driven before.
Is it really the best-handling Porsche of them all? Has 99k miles blunted this front-engined icon? Do you look like a proper berk driving a car with red wheels and red Porsche lettering down the side? Is this a contender for TheCarGuys.tv’s garage? All these questions and more will be answered in this week’s episode.

I raced one of these for 15 years, up until an unfortunate accident on the last lap of a race at Sonoma Raceway in 2018. It was a terrifically balanced and reliable car that took me to quite a few first in class wins, and I do miss it. But I now currently own a GT4, and it’s in another league entirely.

I have a 1994 968CS and a 1977 911S. I bought the CS to try and flip it and make some money on it. However, I didn't expect it to be such a great car and I cannot bring myself to let it go. It's nearly two decades younger than my 911 but it feels like a rocket ship compared to that. We've used it for some very long weekends away and it's comfortably, eats up the miles, has loads of room for luggage and camping gear and has sublime handling. The lack of power and acceleration compared to modern cars does not bother me in the slightest. I get more pleasure and satisfaction out of driving an older car closer to its (and my) limits than not getting anywhere near the limits of a modern quicker car. Try one again on better roads in better weather and you may have a better opinion of it. Good video btw. Cheers.

The 968 is amazing. Fast (enough for sure) handles superbly, fuel efficient, 2 adults and 2 kids in the coupe. Mine has LSD and no sunroof which I think is a good thing and looks better than the 944 in my opinion (and built at porsche)

I love my 968 (non CS). And he is agile and let also some powerfuler Cars behind them. I don´t agree that its not a good sportscar. It is a good sportscar. And much underrated. And you cant compare a 968 with a 992 GT3 or a GT4. Between there are 30 Years and in the price a great difference! Its stupid to make such a comparison (sorry).

I've owned a 94 968 for several years and absolutely love it. I think you have to understand what Porsche was trying to accomplish with the 968 CS....the Japanese competitors were less costly and had as much if not more power. The CS was an exercise in reducing weight by shedding luxury items while reducing costs to make the 968 more competitive in the market. There wasn't much thought of developing more power because the 968 was already expected to be replaced by the Boxster in 95-96. What the 968 did have as standard was the M030 sport suspension. I am surprised that the example you drove did not have the limited slip. I think in better weather on a track your opinion of the 968 would have been more favorable. It is not a torque monster but rather a mostly analog, well balanced sport coupe. As a result of the overall scarcity of 968s and especially the low production of CS models, they are now quite collectible. But just like any car of that age, they will not compare to the power new cars produce through advances in technology. They are however, phenomenal in their balance and handling. Mine is a regular 968 with the limited slip and I absolutely enjoy driving it and plan to keep it along side my 1988 Carrera. Thanks for the coverage as these great cars deserve attention.

Hi Rob, I totally get all that, for me though, even bearing all that in mind, I was a bit disappointed in the experience. I had hoped to be seduced by the 968 because I've thought about getting one for years, but this has now successfully cured me of that. Of course we drove it in the drive as well as the wet on-screen, but for me, the magic didn't come.

I own a 93 968 coupe. I have been slowly restoring it. Getting it to M060 standers. Your right not that quick compared to modern cars. Once rolling it pulls well for a 4 cyl. Handling even W/O M060 is very balanced and predictable. It comes alive at 4000-4400 rpm. ViroCam It wants to be pushed. Its almost the feeling of a small turbo that has spooled up. If you keep it in the higher rev range it turns into another car. I hope you guys get a chance to get another to push in better conditions. Its a drivers car.

Yes I’m a 968 coupe owner, and always bemused by the CS variant being reviewed as ‘the one to own’ , and indeed the prices that sellers ‘demand’ for them. They’re now ‘old’ cars so any ‘advantage’ the CS had , better/lower suspension etc is tosh.... mine has all updated adjustable 2019 suspension with all fresh rubbers/mounts, but with all the toys on board too!, No sunroof though, but full climate control makes up for that... if I put CS script down the sides, I’d get more ££$$ from the muppets who believed the CS hype.....Naw, I’ll keep it, it’s value is slowly rising....

I own 1987 928s4 and 1987 944S and these are at 50k miles mint cars. i love them and care of them. the prices are keep going up and will go up even more in to 5 years and 10 years due to electric cars so hold on tight man. Now i am looking for a clean 968 w nice color to add to my collection. The funny thing is that these guys have no clue how to drive these cars oh well. lol

@@SAMMYJR00777 Agreed - I'd say just about ANY car would come across as underwhelming driven in those conditions. They need to revisit the 968 in good weather on a race track and I bet the results would be far more favorable. The 968 is kind of a lug around town, but at speed it is brilliant.

The host of number 27 drove the 968 twice. first time he had the same option as the Car Guys. He kept an open mind and drove it again a second time, but much harder as suggested by comments from the first video. That changed his opinion, 180 degrees. It a completely different animal if you drive it with courage.

As others have said, the car needs to be driven to extract the full effect and you’re never going to achieve that following a camera car in biblical conditions. Try it on a wiggly track before dismissing it. And with the LSD and bucket seats. Remember it is 25+ years old with genes heading far further back. It will certainly embarrass most of its rear engined brethren of the same era point to point and Quite a few of those many years more recent. I exclude properly sorted RS variants of course. But you are right that the chassis could handle a ton more power, as evidenced by the rare Turbo S and super rare Turbo RS models. Some have gone down the supercharged route to up power to 350 and more but generally at the risk of reliability. No apologies for coming across as a fanboy; I am. After 13 yrs I’d still retain the CS over the GT4, if that counts for anything if push came to shove! But of course, each to their own and thanks for making the video.

I have a 968CS with the full M030 pack and LSD and the handling, specifically the balance of the car is the strongest point of this car. It has the colour coded bucket seats which are pretty snug. I drove mine at the Porsche silverstone experience centre and the low friction track was fantastic in this car. I bought mine in 2008 and have still got it and it’s still under 100,000 on the clock. Mine is white with white wheels and bucket seats. Good review, but think you really do need to have a go on a track or a dry road.

It's a car which only comes alive when you actually rag the arse out of it - preferably on track. As an actual road car it can only really be judged on the standards of its class of 25 years ago - which is why in 2019 its performance and overall zest appear to be lacking compared to more modern performance machinery . It has to be remembered that the 924 platform was already 2 decades old by this time. A late model manual 928gt might be a more exciting front engined Porker to try - if you can find one! 👍

I had one of these, same colour, sunroof too. Didn't have LSD or big red brakes (MO30 ). Great handling, and actually on fast roads it's superb due to the balanced handling at high speed ( ie over 100 ). Feelsome steering, not so quick you can't spank it. Standard brakes weren't good really needed the bigger brakes. Terrible on a hot day without aircon. Went to a 964RS then a 320BHP Caterham ( bespoke engine ). I wouldn't underestimate one on track either with proper brakes and track tyres..you'd still stuff most hatches.

Own one of these, a low milage CS with all the goodies. Didn't like it at first, but when you really start to hammer it down, which obviously you couldn't do on those wet roads, it becomes magical. With brilliant balance and poise and a lovely feel. Closer to its limits it really comes alive. In reality it was faster in acceleration than the regular 968, most magazines clocked it at around 6s. Which is OK, because in reality most hot hatches, even with 300 bhp, don't get below 6s. Even above 200 kph I find it to be as fast as a 993 (autobahn test ofc...). I still consider it to be the right time to buy one of these, you get a unique track oriented Porsche for hot hatch money...

Mine was a ‘94 German market car, with a/c and lsd. It remains one of the best cars I have owned - unfortunately I had to leave it behind when I moved back to Canada from the UK. Had I been able to keep it I would have been tempted to add a s/c, but it was still special without it. A wonderful car for fast weekend trips, even with 2 sets of golf clubs.

It has a sun-roof because Porsche only had these bodies left later in their build. Remember that the Boxster was being developed so it was a case of use what we've got in stock. This is also why the uk got the 'sport' .

Really? I’m pretty sure you could option a sunroof or not, even in 1994
@paultaylorkf2119
@paultaylorkf2119 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheCarGuysTV You could, and a few had no sunroofs. However Porsche needed to use all the BIW and sunroof parts as they knew this car was being replaced soon. I can imagine all dealer and showroom cars were sunfroof models and if you didn´t want a sunroof you were proberbly told of the benifits of one by the salesman. If you think logically it makes sence as why else you you want one on a car that´s so obsessed with being light that it deletes the boot lock but has extra weight in the roof (also lowers the height if you´re wearing a helmet). Remember Porsche were not doing so well and needed to do whatever to survive.

My friends in their 911s have a tough time keeping up with me on backroads. A big part of it is this car makes you feel so comfortable driving it at its limits that you can really push it and it stays predictable. Sometimes I wish it had more power but then other times it seems like it's the perfect amount. You have to really wring it out to get the power out of that variocam head. Too bad you guys didn't have better conditions because this would've been a much different review.

Had to revisit this after all these years as Tyrell just reviewed one. I'd be curious if your opinion would change on the CS if, perhaps, you had a stock suspension example and a dry day to test it on. Not that these cars grow on trees and finding another would be easy. It's just such an interesting specimen. And such opposing views points from a few people who's opinions I respect so much.

I don’t race mine but have rallied on the track with it. It keeps up with the 911s in that context. They pull away on straight aways a bit , but you make up for it in their having to brake early and in the turns. The real joy is a nice day with the top down. Whether you go cab or coupe, six speed manual should be an easy choice against the tip. I’ve driven the 996 and it’s easy to miss another 60hp and the sound of the flat six...no question.

My turbo ended up on it's roof in the field opposite the Goodwood motor circuit entrance (now the carpark), clearing the 10 foot hedge that once stood there. Before they straightened the road there were a couple of great corners though unfortunately on that fateful night a great deal of cow shit as well, my insurance company kept the car.

I owned a 968CS in the early mid 90s. Maybe it was just the Australian version but I thought they all had the hard back Racaro seats and I’ve never seen one with a sunroof . Yes they could have done with more power. Fitzgerald in Melbourne were doing an expensive modification at the time to turn your 968CS into a 968RS turbo, which was seriously fast. I think they only did four conversations, you sometimes see one for sale. On the track the 911 of the day, had a little more squirt down the straight but I found the 968CS could carry more corner speed. The 988CS was also lots more forgiving and predictable than a 964 when been driven quickly, and was an excellent first track car. I don’t think it’s fair to compare a “budget” Porsche from 1993 to a 2018 GT3. I know a few guys who still own a 968 and they love them. The 968 especially the CS was fun to drive, even if the engine was a little rough as The Car Guys said, but a huge leap over the 944S2.

I was with Tom today guys and he told me you did a video on the CS they have. I think you need to try my one! CS's need to be driven rather hard to be appreciated and believe me they are magical on the limit! The varioram really comes into play. Happy for you to try mine as you need to experience one without a sunroof and with an LSD and the bucket seats.

actually its my understanding that Variocam only functions below 4000 rpm to save fuel and run cool. its native timing is above 4000 rpm or if you disconnect the hall sender input connector next to the distributor. Yeah, its counter intuitive.
@amirhashm1
@amirhashm1 4 жыл бұрын
@@nova-oy4qy really good point re when it operates! This is from the 968uk site : The VarioCam operates between 1500 and 5500rpm, and will vary the timing of the inlet camshaft in relation to the exhaust camshaft this has the effect of increasing the overlap and so increases torque. At the appropriate time the engine management system will send a command to the VarioCam solenoid to move a control piston, oil pressure will then flood a cylindrical chamber and this applies pressure onto the cam chain tensioner, varying the timing. This system can adjust the cam timing by as much as 15deg., which enhances the torque by up to an extra 6lb ft. When 5500rpm is reached and more bhp is needed rather than torque the system goes into reverse, this can then release an extra 5bhp.

@@amirhashm1 sounds about right. I had mine open last week and saw how it works. You can disconnect the connector and you will notice that it runs poorly below 4500 or so. Enjoyed your vid guys. I have owned my 1995 968 Sport for 10yrs & I enjoy the feel of it very much. Being non turbo & only 240bhp you do have to get the revs right up into the variocam sweet spot for them to come alive more. I think they also feel nice & torquey considering no turbo. I take mine to many shows & always gets lots of attention as so rare. I must criticize your remarks regarding value, as it makes no sense. These cost 30k new 25yrs ago so what's wrong with 15-25k now for a rare, well made, best & last of a front engined Porsche sports cars? There are loads of old cars that command much more money than these, Integrales (old italian hatchbacks), Dolorians (slow, poorly made car from film), any old Ford RS (made in mass with horse & cart engineering) it's just how classic / modern cars have gone. Most of these cars won't compete with a modern hot hatch, but that's not the point. Surely 'The car guys' know that, don't they?

@@TheCarGuysTV I get what you're saying. I have liked and subscibed thanks for doing a 968 video. I was just giving a brief opinion of my experience. I wanted a cool looking 80/90s classic, easy to maintain myself that is fun to drive on occasional track days and also be good for long distance ( always a compromise) . I bought mine home in simiilar wet weather, I sold it on as it was too easy to drive at 8/ 10 ths of it's ability (or above) compared to old 911RS.

1. Values of 968's are NOT HIGH, 15-25k depending on model, mileage & condition. Low compared to other less capable rare cars. 2. There's plenty of ooomph, free revving, plenty of torque (most powerful 4 cylinder NA engine in it's day) what are you comparing it with? 3. Average hot hatch (Fiesta ST) will blow it into the weeds? Load of nonsense. My wife had an ST 2 yrs ago & it was not faster than my 968 Sport. I have been stuck to the tail of a Cayman which could not shake me around B roads. Either something wrong with that car or you didn't drive it properly. 4. Well built, solid, firm yet supple ride with a lovely smooth, free revving, torquey engine, perfect for a sports car on the road.

180bhp per tonne is more than enough for safe overtaking unless your one had low compression or something. Also there is no way you can know how good it would be on a track with just pootling about on a tight wet B road. They have a great chassis that is highly rewarding to drive. Why do you talk about the (relatively) heavy steering as a bad thing? We don't all want to drive cars with steering weighted for mrs muggins.
