The latest generation of GT3, the 991, is here and the manual gearbox has been banished. PDK all the way but has that killed the appeal of this monster?

You guys deserve more recognition. I understand that this level of editing takes time but this film is coming out the same time that reviews of the RS are! Is it due to the immense quality of finish or does a relatively small group such as yourselves play second fiddle to the big names? Thanks Alex, great work as ever!

Great concise review, with thoughts and observations all in line, I could watch you guys review a motor scooter, or a Porsche a brand that I don't necessarily care for but if you are an enthusiast must keep apprised of, great job as usual guys. Also I would posit to you that its PDK only because that keeps the performance numbers as low as possible on paper, something that a car with only 320ft pounds of torque would desperately want to do to remain relevant in what appears to be a power war going on for that last five or so years.

Again and again you guys keep delivering wonderful stuff, these one my favorites with Porsche 's of course, think it's a pity not to have a manual gt3 , pdk it s ok for road and track but not for daily use , a last-minute shopping round and a couple of revs in 2nd gear wouldn't be wrong . I well might prefer a GTS manual if available. Anyway the exhaust sound of this beast its just amazing , sounds like a Porsche cup car. Cheers

Porsche cutting the red line from 9k may mean that this engine format is getting to its max, one of the reasons why Porsche is probably thinking about the future of the NA 3.8-4 6 cylinder as rough, it's getting harder and harder to take more power of it while the others with v8s, v10s and turbocharged engines are getting more and more power. Honestly I rather have a 400hp light car than a 600hp that I can't use at 9/10s, but the market are fully of consumers with small dick syndrome that buy their cars of its spec sheet, so I can understand the strategy that companies like Porsche and Ferrari are planing for their future.
@HaYouDontSay

Daniel Maia Well said. What do you personally think Porsche will start doing in the future in regards to this?
@danielmaia3559
@danielmaia3559 9 жыл бұрын
To be competitive they will have to turbocharge everything, they already tried to shorten the cap by adding the all wheel steering but it wasn't enough. For the purists they will probably end up trying to cut weight with new and more expensive materials and build a NA flat 4 cylinder.
@danielmaia3559
@danielmaia3559 9 жыл бұрын
A good driver can use 9/10s of an GT3 911, you need to be a great driver to do that, but most people buy supercars or sportscars to show off that's why the big numbers really matters to the manufacturers. For example the Aventador is a selling success because it's loud, very powerful and good looking so people can do little accelerations in the city to show off. I personally rather have a less powerful car that I can reach its limits and learn how to be a better driver than have a very powerful car that I can't use most of its power and won't make me a better driver but it will make me look like a better driver like the Aventador for example.
@danielmaia3559
@danielmaia3559 9 жыл бұрын
So you never heard any journalist using this terms like 9/10s? It's simple 10/10 is the max that the car is capable, if you drive at 10/10 you would be basically be driving like a race driver pushing it to the limit, so if you have a Miata it's easy to do it because it's light and not powerful (that's why the Miata it's such a success, it's more gratifying to drive at higher levels like 9/10 or 10/10), but if you have a 458 Speciale you will need to be a way better driver to drive at its limits because they are higher so an average driver would drive it at 7/10 at max you won't be able to reach its limits because you don't have the skills and it scares you so you will drive it "safely", you respect the car, but by doing that besides being less grateful you will not be learning to drive better like you'd in a Miata because reaching the car limits push your limits. This being by the drivers perspective, they want to drive the car and have the most fun out of it, so they want to drive as close to 10/10s as possible. However, most of the consumers of these kinda of cars are not drivers and they are more interested in showing off (that's why Lamborghinis are a selling success) so the manufactures have to do want their consumers want, they want as much power as possible to be able to say their cars have it despite not being able to use it, in the end it's a business and the manufactures need to respond to what their consumers want. Porsche still one of the few manufactures that have a lot of "drivers" consumers so they respond more of it, but things are changing so more and more Porsche consumers are becoming more posers than drivers and to be able to compete with the 600+ base Ferrari Porsche needs a PDK, an all wheel steering and now to turbocharge the flat 6 that reached its limits at 500hp without blowing.

One thing I missed the most about a manual gearbox is the direct control when I'm launching the car. If I were to launch an auto or DSG, I just put it in D and floor the throttle. Or a hardcore version is to step on brakes hard, put in D, press hard on throttle, and let go of brakes. In a manual, you can feed the clutch just a bit and rev up the engine, then you step hard on the throttle and feed a bit more and that's when the car will pick up and go real fast. As soon as it start going, you can let go of the clutch and floor the throttle. Complex as it sound, I can control the car way better that way. I can move the car instinctively without delays. Anyone else feel this way?

I really feel for these guys. To jump from the Ferrari F12 into a Porsche GT3. Life is rough. Lol I love their vids. Always presented very professionally. Personally, I would never spend that kind of cash on a car where it's ancestor is the VW Beetle. Yes, there are a ton of people who like this vehicle (especially this version of the beet... I mean 911), but if I'm going to be spending this much money on a car, it better be Italian. :-) P.s. This is just my feeling towards this level of vehicle. Well aware of Porsches past and their wins so please don't take offence. Also, if I couldn't have the Prancing horse, I would still take a McLaren over the VW. :-)

Theoretically for the price/fun relationship the GT4 destroys the GT3 and goes head to head with the GT3RS on the fun perspective, but Porsche gave every 918 owner priority on the list for the Cayman GT4 and limited its production enough that people that made the deposit for it may not get one. The Cayman GT4 value on the used market may go crazy high like the Ferrari 599 manual did.

The 991 gt3 will have one unique characteristic, it will be the first gt3 to continually depreciate. I'm sorry but the only appeal of the current gt3 is that its fast. The relentless drive of greater and greater performance will make the 991 obsolete in years to come. I wouldn't be surprised if the 991 gt3 went as low as high £20k's after 3 years.

sportscentury (1) Electric steering which will feel outdated and numb with the relentless drive of progress making future systems better (2) No Mezger engine; the DFI has no connection to Porsches motorsport heritage and legendary GT1. (3) PDK system that will feel slow and dimwitted in about 2 years time. (4) The car is too wide to give the driver confidence to really explore the car on small b-roads. The previous incarnations of the GT3 are timeless cars, the 991 GT3 is a car of its time. In my opinion the 991 GT3 will be a fairly unloved GT3 in the future.

Knowing you don't have the ability to push it anywhere near it's limits even if you could take it to the track? :) Would I buy one over a Carrera S? Hmm... Porsche said 85% of GT3 owners will take it to the track? LOL!! That's marketing talk. I bet Porsche told him to say it. :) ALL Porsche cars sold to the public are designed FOR THE STREET!!! :) If a model wasn't it WOULD NOT be sold PERIOD!! :) And would have sponsorship logo's all over it. :) ::)

Your yearning for a manual gearbox in this car is not personal, everyone wants it in this car. the corporate masters do not think we've noticed the sudden push for automatics over manuals in the media over the last two years. Is it shilling? you decide
@Speednote10
@Speednote10 9 жыл бұрын
candy-ass roodypoo " the sudden push for automatics over manuals in the media" Or maybe it's the fact that the people who actually buy these sort of cars want DCT's.. Maybe a moot point for the GT3 since it's never been offered with a DCT before but look at Ferrari and Lambo, less than 10% of their cars were sold with manual gearboxes the last few years they were offered. I very much doubt the buyers were swayed by any message in the media.
@banddude121
@banddude121 9 жыл бұрын
candy-ass roodypoo Your opinion doesn't matter. It has no weight in their decisions. If you were a consumer, then yes, your opinion would matter but you're not. Ferrari got rid of the manual since only 2% of the 599s were optioned with a manual. It's a waste of money.
@Beer_Dad1975
@Beer_Dad1975 9 жыл бұрын
Porsche Curves Given the outcry every time a manufacturer drops manual as an option on a new model, I always find myself wondering if a lot of people who are buying these things go "ra ra ra, I want a manual" and then find themselves checking the PDK when they are actually filling out the paperwork. As you say, it all comes down to statistics.
@eeterp32
@eeterp32 9 жыл бұрын
There is a reason manual 599s are selling for $600K+ and the 997 GT3 RS appreciated $50K after the 991 GT3 was announced as PDK only.
@banddude121
@banddude121 9 жыл бұрын
eeterp32 Because they are last of (Porsche) or they are rare (599). That is the only reason. They haven't increased in price because consumers want manual gearboxes in their cars. It's the same reason why Nissan isn't making the IDx. The internet talks about what they want but at the end of the day they are buying 10 year old Corollas. Buying used cars makes your opinion on what x automaker should make worthless. So, if you're buying used cars, don't talk about what the market should have.

A professional race car driver is worse than a drone when it comes to these kind of things. Just watch an F1 interview to see what I mean. Every sentence starts with "for sure".

Vega Rapidus Check out Derek Bell. He won Le Mans and he also reviews cars but he is boring and less than insightful.

Hello Xcar Just thought Id share my reasons for no longer watching your otherwise very well made show. You guys need to be harder on the cars. The fact that you hardly ever mention the downsides of the car you are reviewing makes your show very predictable and in some ways take away some of credibility. You are after all reviewing the cars in your videos, right? I hope you will take my point into consideration. I doubt Im the only one having problems with this.
