In this video we show how to fix the common Boxster problem with the roof elastic on each side. As the elastic gets older it loses elasticity which results in the roof not closing within the plastic trim.
The tools and materials required for this fix are:
Scissors
Needle and thread ( regular clothes sewing)
Clothing elastic - I got a metre of elastic which is about 1 inch wide from eBay and cost approx £1.50
Torch
Torx T10 driver

The best part was the opening and closing commentary. Very to the point! Well done.

This video was an immense help and I was able to correct the problem in minutes. The tip in an earlier comment to put a cloth under the elastic strap to prevent losing the screw was a well advised tip.

Great video and tips on the Velcro tabs. Just remember to redo the Velcro tabs back up with the piece of rope secured behind them.

Thanks Great job. For the record, you don't really need to remove completely the T15 screw ( mine is also an 987 ) since it's a pretty tight space to put it back + you don't want to drop it. An elastic with button holes can easily be hooked over the t15 screw in one of the button holes + button hole elastic gives you some kind of adjustment for the future whenever the elastic will loose it's stretrch.

Great video, thanks. Clear and concise which allowed me to get the job done with the minimum of fuss. It's a bit of tight squeeze to get in there but punching a hole in the elastic beforehand with a leather punch then quickly melting the edges to stop fraying made it easy to hold the screw in the hole. That reduced the chances of dropping it in the depths of the hood - not recommended! The first one took me about 30 mins following your video but the second was about half that. If you have a long flexi grabber or magnet to hand it might help just in case something falls down like the T10 bit or socket. Failing that, a bit of blu tack to hold the T10/socket on gives a bit of security.

Thanks for the help! I did mine with a safety pin on the cloth side, which allowed me to easily tighten it up when I found it going wrong about 1 in 4 tries. Elastic needs to be just under 4" from the bolt to the cloth, so a total of 5" works.

Great video. Can see what's happening better than a lot of the other videos fixing this. One thing that worked well for me was using a paper hole punch to make a clean hole in the elastic.

Thanks for the video. It really helped and made the job very easy. I used a double layer of elastic that already has button holes in, so the screw position can easily be adjusted. Mine is a 987 and the screws were T15.

Great fix, thanks for the details, will get this into my diary. Realised that I can also replace the elastic for maintenance mode at the same time. My sewing will be worse than yours, but as long as its effective. Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback Gordon. Hope this works out for you too. I will hopefully get some more videos out soon on other things that I’ve done on the Boxster.

Very useful video, thanks. In my case the elastic still seems okay so I'm going to try adjusting the length by pulling it up one or two holes on the Torx screw. The tool you use to access the Torx screw looks really useful in the confined space. I need to get one of those.

Thanks for your feedback, really pleased that the video has helped. The tools I used were a torx key set and a torx bit on a mini ratchet. Something like this: Amtech I9130 L-Key Satin Cv Torx Key, 9-Piece from Amazon.

@@Just_Rav So helpful, thanks. The key phrase was 'Torx bit on a mini ratchet.' I've just ordered one. I'm on a fast learning curve with this car, never having attempted any car maintenance before. So far I've use a Trombone cleaner to clear the drains and replaced the bonnet and boot opening switch. The elastic on the hood is next, then the plastic ball joints. I'm learning.

Hi, I put this through google translate and your question came out as “can you buy this in any haberdashery type store? Yes, you can buy from any type of store, this is just a clothing type elastic. Thanks for watching my video👍

Thanks for the video. Your other viewers had some good ideas as well. I guess it’s my turn to give it a go. My only question is that I found a loose braided string or very small gauge rope that’s not attached to anything. I suppose I’ll need to find a KZfaq video for that fix, if I’m lucky. Wish me luck🤞

Thanks for your comments. Not sure about the braided rope/string. Where was this rope? Wondering if it should be attached between the roof top and hood frame.

I saw your centre console, did you spray that up yourself? Mine is covered in a rubber material and is all coming off.
@Just_Rav
@Just_Rav 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, Thanks for watching the video! The centre console is factory specified in Galvano Silver along with the roll over bar. I’ve seen where people have stripped the centre consoles to remove the rubber and then painted due to scratches. Not sure what is used for stripping, maybe something such as trying nail varnish remover but I guess you need to be careful not to damage the plastic underneath.
