I retrofit my 2000 Boxster S with a 997 Carrera 74mm throttle body and plenum for some more seat of the pants power!
budget mods along with de snorkeling and crios give significant gains!

Hi nice to see this. I have 986 2.7 2000, i d like to know why you don t use alluminium plenum is not necessary.... The original intake was 78 mm? Thank you from Italy..

Nice vid. Did you ever think of putting a plastic v splitter like the Pedro Garage version in the plenum? Thoughts of that might mirror the IPB version?

from what I observed with the 911 doing just a V splitter IPD plenum with the stock throttle body, there's no notable gain by doing so, no. The gains are all from the larger throttle body.

So, having installed both larger throttle body and better exhaust, do you think it would be beneficial to have your ECU flashed/programmed with new specs? If so, do you know of any reasonable sources for doing so? I see offers in the range of $500-800....

normally I'd say yes, just to avoid occasional MIL. But, I've never had good luck with the porsche tuners, so nah.

Hey man, great stuff! I know you've moved on to greener pastures but i had a quick question for you. I have a full catback exhaust system plus the TB and plenum with upgraded airbox exactly like yours. All that being said i still have stock headers. Do you think I should go aftermarket or am I already maxed out on power?

metalguyn get headers no such thing as max out on power . Get new headers should give you extra 10-15 hp depending on brand . Plus look into makeing the vehicle lighter makes a huge difference ..

well, plug and play at least. definitely requires some modification here and there. worth it though. car is MUCH more responsive and pulls quite a bit harder.

You'll need extenders on the 2ndary o2 sensors to prevent CEL if you decat or run 200 cell or less

Any idea how much horsepower this modification makes ? I have a 2.5 and find it slow by todays standards...

the 2.5 cars will never be 'fast', heck even the 3.2 isn't that fast. This mod most notably gave me a MUCH more responsive throttle response. power is probably up 6-10hp around the rev range. One thing worth noting, this is ONLY for 99.5+ e-gas equipped boxsters. the cable throttle boxster you will need a throttle body from a 99 3.4 carrera (cable operated) and it may require some modification to the throttle cable as well. It may or may not bolt to this 997 plenum... Best guess on your car would be get a stock 99 Carrera 2 plenum and cable throttle body and just start trying stuff out till you find something that works and fits reliably.

I want to do this mod to my S.... however what I want to know,.. first,.. Does anyone make this system (all inclusive) as a kit ?? My main concern is having the Engine lights come on constantly after the mod...

Yeah it's called the IPD plenum which includes the molded one-piece silicone intake tube, hose clamp, 997 throttle body, four longer bolts, and of course the plenum made from aluminum. It's more expensive, but overall much cleaner and tidier looking and slightly better. Which is a better value? Depends on the individual's preference and pocketbook. I personally prefer the clean look of the IPD setup despite it being overpriced in my opinion. I sourced the 997 throttle body separately to save a couple of bucks, and purchased only the plenum and tube as a kit.

3.2l on the Boxster sport best upgrade to add air flow is the IPD or just plain and simple delete the air box and upgrade to a K&N 9.5”x3” filter with the guard. Also adding high flow cats and straight down pipes. My 3.2l kicks ass in LA and SGV!

Have stock 99 Boxster, could I use stuff from Big Brother 911? From the 2.5 to the 3.2 motor? Would I be able to use stuff from 3.2 engine?

I fitted my 986 2003 with a 74mm throttle body and plenum and its not running. Its not an S model. Would that be the reason why?

if its an e-gas throttle body car, nope. the plug is identical between the 67 and 74. it will idle hunt for a while.

Hello. I have a 2006 987 boxster s 3.2L i believe its the same motor that's in a 986 boxster s. From what year and model is that plenum and throttle body from? I'd like to do the same mods. Thanks!

the 987 S should be a 3.4 liter. plenum is from a 997 C2. thb is from a 996 C4S the 987 S already has a big throttle body

Ovalbore thanks for replying. Unfortunately mine is a 3.2l. 2005 and 06 have the 3.2l. In 2007 then they upgraded to the 3.4L. Thanks for the info! I found the plenum for $75 online and a 74mm bosch throttle body for $190 which will be way cheaper than the IPD kit. Im glad i ran into your videos while searching KZfaq. Btw, does it set off the check engine light?

Interesting, I did not know that! In that case, I'd check to make sure your car uses the 67mm THB still before ordering this stuff, but it's great on my 986S. does not trip a check engine light. stock MAF, so the car doesn't know the difference. I think I found the plenum used for $26 and the thb used for $76 shipped. great value for dollar mod. haha

haven't split the case. #1 rod bearing is the issue. guessing theres just enough clearance where the big end of the #1 rod is hitting the case clockwise but glances off counter clockwise. core engine is for sale on ebay.. we'll see if I get around to messing with it myself.

Since you put the 997 plenum could you buy a 997 ipd plenum and put it in there. Those guys have the gt3 throttle body. Thanks.

requires even larger, more ill fitting intake piping and that that point you need to increase the size of the MAF housing and tune the ECU. the bottle neck is no longer the throttle body with a standard C2 throttle body. this also cost a whopping $105 to put together and IPD prducts generally cost hundreds more than that.

There's a quickie on the IACV in the queue right now -- more in the future, but really not a TON more needs to be done to the car. needs a soft top replacement. bought the HAARTZ canvas... MAY give it a go myself even though I'm scared of upholstery work.

the IPD system fits better, has a pattented design inside that cuts the incoming air and redirects it to the two intake manifolds where the stock T piece just has a flat wall -- creating more turbulence.. and, uhh.. well that's it really. the IPD fits better, and the air velocity is probably faster and cleaner. That being said, I have an IPD competition on my brothers 996.2 with the GT3 throttle body, and the power gains on the boxster were similar through the pants as they were with the IPD and BBTB on the 996.

That wasn’t a vacuum leak, it was your ECU learning of what’s going on.. the change of air/fuel ratios...same happens with LS1 swaps... But as far as I understand with this mod you will only gain 5-10 at maximum.. but may be just better response...

not sure. throttle response noticeably improved. I'd guess this picks up 6-8hp pretty easily. Real world terms, that's more hp gain than anything except cat delete or muffler on a boxster S. Dynoing this is so difficult due to ignition coil location, otherwise I'd have done a before and after.

The best mod for the egas cars 2.7 3.2 etc is a throttle controller.idrive is a good one.totally transforms the throttle responce a must !

disagree. doesnt gain you anything, just changes the e-gas map to a logarithmic curve. That money could be spent on something that actually makes the car faster or more powerful.

Honestly I never got the baseline Dyno done on the car -- I have also just replaced the engine so any numbers I'd post would be meaningless. butt dyno doesn't lie though, and the throttle response increase is significant. the car now has headers and midpipes, and it near neck and neck with my brothers 996 C2 3.6 0-100

I looked at the whole fab speed package. Exhaust.ecu etc About 5k in parts. Say 2k in labour. And it adds 27hp tops which is about 10% more than the stock 250hp on my boxster s. My mechanic at ktec said. Money would be better spent on a 13k Evo 09 and for a few kgs you can crank it to 500hp!I'm still keeping the boxster. After 15 years she's the best gf I've ever had...well most reliable anyway!

Agreed. the 986S is a rare case where porsche put small undersized parts on to keep it from nipping at the 3.4 carrera at the time. most models have nice big throttle bodies and decent headers. the box S uses the 2.5 liter throttle body and 2.7 exhaust manifolds... it's relatively easy to pull an additional 10-15hp out of it with these simple changes.

@@OvalboreCars a clean engine is a happy engine. Just saying. Every time I ever go into the engine bay on my 03 Boxster S I clean it while there. My car appreciates it and therefore I get loving returns from her. No IMS issues (small percentage anyway) because I take care of details. When I need a clutch, I will do the IMS change then but not until then.

I just did a clutch on my '84 Carrera Cab for the cost of parts and time -original rubber center disc disintegrated. I understand on a Boxster the trans is dropped to do ims and clutch etc. I got this '97 Arena Red Boxster with 72k miles with hard top for $3,500 on a whim. Just needed maintenance from sitting and some clear coat fixed. It's certainly worth the upgrade and effort. It's well put together and a flat six! I can fit into this Boxster but not a 914. Win, win. I think the 2.5 is a nice revving little motor.

This will not make any noticeable difference in power to make it worth the upgrade, you are limited by how much your heads can flow on this car, and you are already at the MAX even if you add bigger intake and throttle body. But I would still do it since you are going from one stock to another “better” stock setup The same goes for IDP plenums and GT3 TB, they are useless upgrades on the 986/996, 997/987

you're a moron. 80 degree ambient temp, engine still had latent oil heat... and it wasn't a high rev. if I had pegged the limiter, sure. 4k aint a big deal on a marginally warm engine. take your keyboard cowboying back to a forum.
