Porsche has been celebrating the original Boxster's 25th birthday this year (as have we). The original Boxster's designer, Grant Larson, flew in from Germany to attend Porsche Parade this year. With the timing perfect, he spoke with us about the Boxster's design at length. Learn how the 1993 Boxster Concept at the Detroit Auto Show became the Boxster we know and love from Larson's perspective.

So nice to hear from Grant. I love our Boxster. That music in the background was annoying. I like that style music but I was trying to focus on what was being said. Too distracting.

Love my 1999 silver/red 5 speed 986. Picked it up new in November 1998 and still have it. Was a daily driver year round....except for snow... until 2017. 102,000 miles and counting. Still a blast to drive. A few years back I added a 2017 718 Cayman S PDK. What a difference 20 years makes. The Cayman is fun in its own right. Power difference is amazing. PDK is smarter than I am.

After I sold my '66 Porsche 912 in 1972, I was priced out of the Porsche market until the Boxster showed up. In 1999 I purchased a 1997 Boxster, which was almost identical to the one shown in the video. It was silver with the Boxster red interior (mine had a wood steering wheel and the exterior color on the roll bar). I drove that car all over, including a memorable trip to Purgatory, Colorado, in the snow in November. I traded it for a 2001 996 in 2003 in the popular blue with the gray interior, but like my 912, after seeing this video, I wish I still had the Boxster.

I have a 1998 986. It is so much fun to drive even to work. At night when I go home, I pray for no traffic jams and clear roads to blast down. It always puts a smile on my face. I also have a 2021 Subaru STi but given a choice of what to drive, I grab the keys to the old Boxster.

Always great to hear from the original designer of any car, especially one as talented as Mr Larsen. Time I think has been kind to the first Boxster; it still looks great after 25 years. Porsche seems to have this knack of reaching into its automotive history and coming up with a pure shape that can stand the test of time. I see the 987, 981 and the 718 as refinements of the 986 rather than completely new models.

I bought a 2002 Boxster with a great deal of skepticism after driving other inexpensive Porsche’s (924 etc.) I immediately fell in love and traded it for a 2003 Boxster S. I still have the car , and often leave timid 911 driver’s in the rear view mirror on my way up Rt 7 to Lime Rock Park in Connecticut since it’s such an easy car to drive fast. I own over 20 cars and when asked which is my favorite, I say “Without budget constraints , it’s the Boxster , with budget constraints , it’s my Mazda Miata”. Heresy , I know , but both cars are go-carts that always bring a smile. As we know …. “It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow”

Same general sentiments and almost to the word. I had a 928 first and it was nothing to write home about. 2000 Boxster S changed my opinion and raised the bar. I miss that car but have 2014 981 Boxster S now and 2003 Carrera S. Also 2 early Miata's. Etc. But the Boxster S is the ultimate car.

today's standard! for me, it is very hard to understand that back in the days porsche designers were having a hard time with budget to create their new line up!!!! Good things to know for now is that Boxter and Cayman are doing very important roles and segment for Porsche! Great interview and very interesting historical stories!

I have 99 boxster and 2000 996, the boxster is often more fun even though it always needs more power but you can drive it harder without reaching the speeds of the 996

I'm in the process of buying a first gen Boxster as a donor for SPB. These are fantastic cars in which to develop track/race driving skills, especially once ~450lb of weight has been removed. I will be giving my Cayman S a much needed break.

Question: if the Cayman is the better handling car compared to the 911, why are there so many Rallye 911 but no Caymans? :) This just came to mind as I have found a few gravel roads across the US which I would like to drive and my co-pilot said that's impossible in a Boxster :)
@romulus_

hype. it's more outrageous to do such a thing to the oh so sacred 911 and it will naturally get more attention. but aside from that, there are 4 wheel drive 911 variants.

@@Baerchenization there are many 4wd rally 911s made by enthusiasts. I've seen one in person. can't speak to the factory's decision-making, but the gt3 was probably chosen as a lightweight starting platform with a very powerful, durable engine.
