I did a three hour walking FOOD tour. Went to 6 different restaurants/bars. Had mufango..pina colada..local icecream, pastries and fish! As we walked all over San Juan our guide gave us the culture and history too! Loved it.

The last ime we were in San Juan, we walked on the path around the edge of the island. and ended up at the El Morro fort. The walk was absolutely breath taking. There seems to be dozens of cats along the path. San Juan has set up a sanctuary of sorts for them. Some are very friendly and some are stand offish. Anyway, you are right there by the ocean and the waves are bashing up against the rocks. We are going back on our next cruise and we will do this again. BTW, San Juan deserves a lot better score than 5.

We enjoy your videos including this one on San Juan as we will be going there next year! The ride on the sailboat looked good until we saw the specifics so maybe a walking/shopping tour is more likely. Good to know about the cell phone service! We also tried to schedule a flight to San Juan and start the cruise there but Miami was far less expensive for us anyways. We also would like to tour the various churches while we are in San Juan. Thanks, as always, for your insights Dee and Jay!!

I stayed at the Caribe Hilton in September and of course had to have a few Pina Coladas. :) It's a beautiful resort. I actually preferred their new take called a Sparkling Colada, made with coconut rum, sparkling wine and bitters. I didn't realize the cruise ship ports are in Old San Juan! We'll be there next week on a port stop (!), so this is super handy. I didn't get an excursion in San Juan so I think we'll just get off the ship and explore. Thank you!

If you are a foodie, next time in Old San Juan stop in a little Shop call Spicy Caribbee, it"s across from the Bautista Cathedral on Calle Del Cristo. While my friends are shopping for jewelry and purses I'm in there buy spices and herbs, they also have the best vanilla.

We did the Amazing Grace Pirate Cruise on our last cruise. It was a pretty average harbor tour, but on an interesting vessel. The included drinks were really good too (it was like a spicy rum punch, really good). We had a good time with it and talked to some interesting people, but I also think it was a little overpriced for what it was.

Another free option is to walk the sea walk just outside the old city wall. Fairly flat and you can walk all the way over to El Morro. They used to have an entrance to the Fort, but that got closed. Tons of cats and iguanas. You can start it near the port or there is a gate part way up.

We found the Fortress at El Morro far more interesting than San Cristobal. One of the guides there told us about the day the US Navy shelled the fort during the Spanish American War as they attacked San Juan looking for the Spanish fleet. There is still shrapnel in one of the walls.

Hah, we really enjoy San Juan, but have to rate it on how much fun you can have *at* the port (which would be a zero for San Juan since there's nothing inside the actual port building, ha ha...) but I expanded my rating a little bit because the actual city is so fun to explore!! :P

Love your videos! I am planning to stop here in April and I have been concerned about safety overall. Most advice is to not walk around in town, but it seems you guys had great fun. Did you feel safe here? My husband and I will be with our 10 year old daughter and it seems like my guard is way up on this cruise for that reason. Sounds like so much fun to walk around and really see the whole place.

Oh wow, we've never had any issues walking around Old San Juan, even in the dark. I mean, keep your guard up and be aware of your surroundings, just like any big city you'd walk around in anywhere. But we've always felt super welcomed and safe there.

From what I heard, they removed umbrella street during the protesting over the governor, but now that he's out of office, I wasn't sure when or if they would put it back up. You're probably right about it not being up because of the storm now though!!

Hi you guys! I've been trying to determine if San Juan has rickshaws, pedicab, whatever available from ship to port. I'll be renting a scooter while in port but, I've heard that it may be a bit of a walk depending exactly where we dock. Any info you might have is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Hey, great info!! Just wondering as we are doing a cruise in April. When you are saying Old SAN Juan, is it actually in walking distance from cruise ship port or would you need a cab? In particular the famous chapel on the cliff? Was that cathedral you mentioned walkable? Thank you for any information

Do you have any advice for a short port day? Our projected day is only 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And you know that getting off and back on will make that more of a 8:30 to 1:00 kind of day. Would Pinones beach or El Yunque even be in the cards?

That sounds like a super short schedule to pull off something like that... I'm thinking a ship excursion, just to make sure the ship doesn't float away without you having a chance to get back... yow!! :P Or just a nice wander around on your own in Old San Juan, the forts, etc... staying close to the ship...

@parodeejay

There's a place called Scryer Rum within easy walking distance of the cruise port, but if you're after something like Bacardi, that would require a cab ride, as it's a good bit out of town.

We love San Juan for sure! The "free & frugal" rating was originally meant as a rating of how much fun you could have without leaving the security gates at each port, but that would have given San Juan a zero, ha ha... we had to expand the area a little bit to include the city... :P
