great video as usual. the little river @30:50 it's called Le Pouce stream. it works as a storm drain. Since port louis is surrounded by mountains ( on 3 sides), during heavy rainfall, water from the mountain flood the area. these canals help the water to safely flow into the sea and there are 3 of them. in 2013 some construction project blocked one of them and it resulted in a flooding of the area and tragic loss of life.

Not only construction in 2013 - One of the main blockage is the MONSTROUS parking built by Rogers on top of the Le Pouce Stream at John Kennedy Street - just next to the Rogers Aviation building. I have no idea who gave work permit for these constructions nor am I accusing anyone of corruption....

I'm pretty sure that the old building with the arches at the entrance of the Caudan was the headquarters of the British firm Blyth Bros where I used to work as an assistant storekeeper from 1966 until June 1972 when I migrated to Australia in July of that same year. The old railways and the official docks were on the left-hand side of Blyth Bros and furthermost to the left across the main road were the Post Office, the bus terminal and a small Cafė called "Chemineau" very famous for its boiled noodles. "Chemineau" is translated tramp, vagrant in English. Speaking of those things makes me nostalgic; just as well that we can in some way follow in your footsteps to some of these memorable places.

I really need to take a trip to Mauritius! How much money should my husband and I set aside? In USD please. I want to shop mostly and try different foods. It's funny that you guys call it Macky D's, We call it Mickey D's ( which now that I think of it yours makes more sense and my Aussie husband used to call it Maccas. I will say, to anyone thinking at least you can have that if you travel...um you can BUT it's not the same food! It doesn't taste the same! The first time I went to Australia there was nothing familiar about the food selections. My brother in law LOVES "Maccas" and that was a no from me, I didn't eat there after my first bite. NOPE! So I believe it's there in name only, the food is based on the culture. That's cool information too Bryan! You and Riki are so informative! It makes complete sense that it's for draft animals now! We call those historical buildings and here they have strict laws and regulations to keep them as pristine as possible. Too bad this isn't smellivison! Twenty cents for that treat?? Fantastic price! That is so cool! I wouldn't want to walk under the bats but I would love to see that!

It's always tricky to budget a holiday to Mauritius, you can go cheap at $75 USD a day, or have a blow the budget all inclusive resort at $1000 a day and up, My best guess for a nice holiday, $250 a day for both of you.

Nice video. What do you think of the hygiene level in Port Louis? Would you buy street food? I am sure there are lots of room from improvement by just doing simple actions from the people by the people and also the authorities. One of the major improvement would be accessibility - pedestrian way and for people on wheelchair. Some streets need to become pedestrian on Saturdays to bring in more activities. There are still space to make it greener - it is called proper urban planning. I am sure there are better ideas out there but due to the high political pressure from the suburbs the business center is being neglected. Last issue about the old buildings. The authority need to make an inventory of them, classify as national patrimony and work to get funds from United Nations or private sector to sponsor the restoration of these buildings. The economic outcome specially tourism is considerable.... hmmm ok .. I will leave it here ...
@BryanDiscoversWorld
@BryanDiscoversWorld 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the great comment. I love the idea of making a pedestrian only area, as we nearly got runover a few times. There is a lot that can be done to improve the area. hopefully they will.

Why didn’t you visit Aapravasi Ghat Aren’t you interested in the real history of the island The railway line you mentioned was used to convey slaves and sugar to and from the plantations and the sugar mills

You might have missed our video on Aapravasi Ghat here's the link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7eGfKt6xt2tj2w.html .Also while the railway was used to transport sugar, it was only operational 30 years after the end of slavery.

@@BryanDiscoversWorld It was used to transport indentured labourers which is nothing else but slavery in another name these people where tricked and conned by the British and often kidnapped and transported from India to Mauritius and moved from Aapravasi Ghat using the railway to the plantations.

Hi Bryan, These are very old colonial French wooden buildings. Some of the buildings are closed down because the owner of these old colonial buildings have passed away and there is no one to claim the property back. Should you rejuvenate these old colonial buildings they will look great.
