THE PORT OF VALENCIA
The coastline of Valencia, lacking any natural shelter, was a serious obstacle to the beginning of commercial maritime exchanges. Despite this, there are antecedents of this activity that date back to the 6th century BC. It is much later, as a consequence of the privilege granted in 1491 to the Valencian knight Antoni Joan by King Fernando El Católico, when we can establish a first antecedent of an exploitation port itself. From that moment on, the economic vigor of the Valencians materialized in a growing port trade, which led King Pedro III of Aragon to grant Valencia the establishment of the maritime-commercial Jurisdiction of the Consulate of the Sea. Already in the second In the middle of the 15th century, the city of Valencia, with 75,000 inhabitants, was the most populated in the Iberian Peninsula, and its port was the most important in the Crown of Aragon, having navigation lines with ports in Italy, Western Europe and the North of Africa.
From that date until the 19th century, various construction and facility improvement projects were carried out without much success due to the avenues of the Turia River and the growth of the beach. At the same time, the port's traffic grew, obtaining trade privileges with other kingdoms in 1679 and with America in 1791.
Throughout the 20th century, improvement works were carried out on the buildings and warehouses and the expansion of the docks continued until reaching the current configuration, with specialized facilities for each type of merchandise. These expansions, linked to the emergence of container traffic in recent years, allow Valencia to achieve its current leadership position among the commercial ports of the Western Mediterranean.
