I got a galaxy s10 for this very purpose. It works great! I also experimented with a raspberry pi and touchscreen but it seems the pi or the screen put out a lot of QRM on most bands. Still worked though and was very portable with a nice case for the pi + screen.

My Samsung Note10+ 5G works great with a USBc OTG cable to an RTL2832U. I leave the rabbit ears antenna and RTL in my backpack which goes everywhere with me. I then use "SDR touch". I also have Avare, Ships and more.

Nice video! I had some issues with an android 9 huawei phone, turns out my phone would kill the "driver" after a few seconds in the background, the solution was actually hidden somewhere in the battery settings, took me some time to figure that out... xD

I use an RTL-SDR with SDRTouch full on my phone. I've tried the many tablets I have kicking around. An older Lenovo tablet wont run the SDR, says the tablet needs rooting and another little RCA tablet runs it but it's a bit choppy but it works. I also use it on my phone with works well. I'd like to do what someone below me did by having the SDR and rabbit ears in a backpack and then running a cable to your phone or tablet. Pretty sneaky, Ive been to a few events where a wireless microphone was in use and I would have loved to get a recording of everything said.

Interesting tablet as an option. Is there a SBC ( not Pi4 ) you would reccomend with the equivalent of a Pi 7" touch screen as an option. Thingiverse has a few case options that would allow modification for extra batteries and the dongle in one case, just not the antenna. Also, what portable antenna( s ) would you recomend that would also fit into a small backpack?

This is exciting! I'm considering an Android tablet. I've got to get a good antenna. I primarily want to listen to aircraft radio. AM & HF ham radio would be nice. Ideas on antennas best for portable use? I watched this on my iPad.

I guess it depends on how portable you want the setup to be. You can purchase some small-ish multiband hf antennas, but I guess it depends on bands.

@@TechMindsOfficial dude how are you doing this I finally got that otg my phone is a pay as you go Moto E Android 10 the app you're showing I have it and it works fine it's just I don't really know alot about the configuring the app I have no clue what to put the sample rate to I guess that's why I can't hear anything like Ham Frequencies all I can pick up Is my local radio stations. The dongle I have is a R820T2 SDR & DVB-T NESDR Mini 2 it works ok but how do I get and download the ham frequencies I'm having so much trouble I can't get this. The antenna I have no clue what kind it is see someone let me use it and never came back for it it's not a big antenna it's a little one but it's big enough for you to put on your car I'm really stuck is there anything you can do.

how is the power consumption of this while for example continuously monitoring the pmr446 band? i'm looking for a neat solution to pair a bluetooth headset of a phone with that band (to be used inside a helmet) and I wonder if the phone would still work for 12+ hours doing this. Edit: also, do these apps work with the screen off or the app in the background?

Guidance Needed: I've only owned an iPad. I've looked at a few Android pads, but am only guessing. I saw many inexpensive pads online, but read that the limiting factor is the processor chip. What is too little? Overkill? I saw the Huawei Mediatek M5, but have read that users of Huawei products can't use the Google PlayStore. On another end of the scale I saw the Amazon Fire HD 10". Would it work for RTL-SDR? I looked up the Lenovo, but Amazon said it can't be mailed to my location. Thank you for any guidance that can help me.

G'day Matt Thanks for the video. I am looking for a portable solution to track powerline noise. I need something that will go from HF to 70cm AM/SSB. Most receivers are mode to band specific...ie...on 70cms they are locked to FM...which is no good to me, tracking power line discharges. I have a Samsung tablet and an RTL dongle but havent tried to interface anything yet. I wonder if any of these software packages would give the modes I am after on the bands I am after. QUESTION: Can I use the same dongle I have been using on my PC to run on my Android and Laptop whenever I want to switch. I am assuming I would just need to also install the drivers and RF Analyzers on those units.

The problem I have with using Android tablets is I can't decode any digital signals. I'm actually working on a modified version of RF Analyzer in my spare time to add a "spirit box" scan function for fun.

I can receive SSTV on my Samsung 12,4 inch tablet which is about 7 years old. Just look under ham radio software in the play store.

Thanks for the video, I have an RTLSDR and a micro-b to usb-c OTG cable which seems to provide power (light comes on) but none of the android drivers I've tried have worked. A bit of googling seems to indicate that there's some kind of change in how Android 9 Pie connects to or allows access to OTG devices which doesn't appear to be specific to any hardware. Anyone else seen this?

There’s an app called SDR Receiver that seems to be solely designed for this.

There are lightweight laptops that are cheap. Often you can get them at ALDI. But the CPU of these are often bad.

Yeh that’s exactly what I found, which is why I showcased this Lenovo M8. I’ve tried a few and they were just so so laggy, made it impossible to use. The Lenovo M8 handles it very nicely.

KD6TXB here thank you for the video I have a Y7 Android tablet 10. been trying to use SDR Touch but it keeps looking for drivers my dongle is an NESDR SMART nooelec that I use on Linux Mint installed drivers first then SDR Touch just like instructions any advice on why not working on the tablet download pocket TXRX Works fine but its stand alone app no need for dongel? Anyone?

Just tried both SDR Touch and RF Analyzer on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A. The SDR Touch and Driver loaded with no problems and appears to work, however the Spectrum View on the Free Version was only available for 15 seconds then the app says if you want to keep using the Spectrum Option I have to purchase the Key. The RF App won't even recognize my RTL-SDR Ver. 3 Dongle!

4:33 - Which is exactly the problem with this approach. Your SDR requires high CPU use software on the device in order to run, thus using more power just to run the app. Like, considerably more. Add to that the energy required to operate the SDR electronics and all of a sudden your device battery is falling like a rock. No problem, right? Just plug in the charger. Except you can't, the port is in use by the SDR cable. If you want to get any real use out of it, you're going to need some kind of option to use the SDR and charge the device at the same time, which is not the easiest thing in the world to nail down.

I hear you on that, but if I was going to use for extended time, I would switch to a laptop which has multiple ports. I have my dongle on my pc currently, I am planning to be able to switch and connect to both my cell and laptop using the same dongle for all, not sure if that is doable though.

@@newtron9 In my opinion it's the only real way to do it for a lot of reasons. At the very least, a compact laptop so you can get some portability and still be more or less an SDR power user. This is how I take my SDRPlay RSP1a and 2 Pro mobile, and as long as I stick to SDR Uno (it is reasonably easy on the CPU) it works really well. Got myself a mag mount antenna for the car roof and I can do some decent damage that way. If I were taking it camping or something, I'd probably bring the discone and a reasonably long PVC pipe. Only way I'd ever waste any time working an SDR with a mobile device is if I could find a tablet with the ability to charge and run the SDR at the same time. Phone screen is just wayyyyy too tiny, I find it seriously annoying.

@@newtron9 Thank you, kind sir. Well, I've looked around a little but unfortunately my phone is an ancient Note 5 and as such struggles enough just connecting to certain things. I _feel_ like it's a simple enough problem, but the charger circuit especially in my phone is just a classic example of design jackassery. I mean, really, who makes a phone capable of accepting external hardware without the ability to charge itself to overcome the dramatic increase in power drain?? Samsung, that's who. I haven't looked around for such in a while, but perhaps someone has come up with something. At least some kind of splitter adapter allowing power input to ease the load of the attached device would be at least something.

Bought the rtl-sdr dongle installed iOS paid SmartSDR and Windows, and you can't monitor shite, have to have an actual radio first. What sdr program will? Don't want or need to transmit, I just want to listen.

You WILL need to worry about power on an Android tablet using this SDR dongle, since the tablet only has so much in the battery, and eventually, the battery WILL run out of power.

Rf analyser doesn't recognise rtl-sdr v3, it call for rf hack.... Again bad info for rtl sdr owners desperately trying to find actual working software... Pc with win 10, or huwai honor 7 on android, still no actual working software.....
