Join Gary and Richard in another episode of "ML&S Portable" as they take on the challenge of going portable with the Hustler 6-BTV. As you may know, the 6-BTV is no small antenna - it's a fantastic piece of equipment designed for maximum performance. But the question is: can you successfully use it in a portable setting? I love it when we (amateurs) can “get out there” and put up a successful, portable HF antenna. Also looks like a near perfect approach for the ham with space and other miscellaneous limitations. Good work, gentlemen.

That was a laugh !! Ive just put one together and have got to the stage of tunning the traps up in the next few days. What would have been good was if you had included in the video you tunning the traps. Definitely endorse the comment re the tilt plate, makes life a lot easier for a 77 year old single handily while tuning the traps, even if you don't want to hide it from the neighbours during daylight hours. Just wondered what happened to the guy wires as they were not seen in the final part of the video. Using that tripod without guys was rather brave !!!! It does move a round a bit in even a light breeze. Would have been nice to have known what VSWR's you managed to get on each band ? G1FBH.

I like my BTV6, many contacts. Ground mounted with a very limited set of radials

Wow that me G8TXK down here in darkest Cornwall and he was stronger with me than I can hear I was with him .I was running about 70 watts into an inverted V antenna. I have a 4 BTV but it just a backup antenna these days and it does work pretty well but it’s best with off the ground radials in my opinion,they also work well on top of buildings with radials, the ground rod is the least efficient of all 🤔😀

Hello Peter, many thanks for the QSO, we had tried a few other bands on the day of filming but they were all very quiet. Yes, we realised that the ground rod was not efficient, but the idea was to quickly set up to see if it could work.

The Nano VNA was in the case, but not used (in the video). I would have thought the SWR would have been tested before live Txing. It would have been interesting to see the SWR profile of the antenna on the VNA.

Excellent presentation. Couple of questions: 1 - What was the approximate distance of your contact? ~300km? 2 - What was your power out? Thank you!

Hi, we were using 50W and the distance to contact was 330Km. The bands were very quiet the whole day when we made the video.

I am looking for an aerial and I’ve got it down to these two. Would you have any suggestions or maybe even another one for a small garden? BB7V or Diamond CP-VU8

Yes, the 6-BTV antenna works well on 11m. However, you need to be sure to adjust the antenna to get a good 1:1 SWR without using a tuner if you want to use an amplifier.
