A stunning reference in the landscape of Vila Velha de Ródão, Portas de Ródão is a natural geological occurrence, located on both banks of the Tagus, in the municipalities of Vila Velha de Ródão and Nisa.
It is an imposing gorge excavated by the Tagus River in the quartzite crest of the Perdigão mountain range, which created a strangulation in the course of the Tagus River with 70 meters wide.
Rhode Gates. The steep walls (alt. 170 m) reminiscent of two 'doors', one to the north, in Vila Velha de Rodão, and the other in Nisa, cause an impressive narrowing in the course of the Tagus.
On one of the tops of Portas do Rodão, in a lookout position, is this old watchtower from the 19th century. XII called King Vamba's Castle. It is so called because it is thought to have a Visigothic origin and to have belonged to that king.
