When I was in my teens about 20 years ago, all the dudes in HS wanted the loudest bass -- not the cleanest bass. They went for bandpass, but I went for port and that bass extension made me feel like floating on air. Now-a-days, I'm a pure audiophile and a sealed enclosure is my pick for the frequency response like you're sitting live in front of a symphony orchestra. My HT is still ported though, because most of what you hear is not real sound.

Ported enclosures take a very experienced installer to get it blending well in a car system. In a sound quality system, (which I prefer) a person would probably find the sealed system to be much more musical for everyday enjoyment. With a high quality amplifier and subs powered right, you won't be lacking low bass. Now if you just want to beat low and hard, ported would probably be your best choice. I like listening to music loud and sounding like the band is playing right on the hood of my car, I've not been able to get it just right with a ported sub, only sealed.

Sealed enclosures are generally used in systems that are designed around Sound Quality. As you said, they have more accurate bass reproduction. Ported enclosures can be tuned very low and can be used in SQ as well but dont have quite the punch and accuracy of the sealed enclosures.
@losbarrel5621
@losbarrel5621 5 жыл бұрын
Gary Turner I agree with some of your comments, but do not agree that sealed enclosures have more punch. The sealed design allows more accurate bass as the VAS or volume acoustic suspension is more controlled. Where a potted or reflex enclosure acts as a vent that channels air and raises efficiency and punch of lower frequencies. Ever been to a rock concert? Ported designs throw the bass much further than sealed. Play them side by side if need be.

@The Life Of D&K what he means by punch is tightness like a kickdrum in rock music. A sealed sub would sound punchy like tight. A ported would not be able to keep up therefore would port lag.

@@coyote5.02 I listen to metal a lot too. I got an 8" Skar to help keep the double bass beats fast and tight. Sucks that I learned about sealed being better for metal but my skar kerf port enclosure at 40 hz sounds unreal now. To help you get more clarity for the double bass make sure your LPF isnt too high cos it brings in mid bass stuff going out the sub, turn it down to 70 ish and try that. Also, everyone says dont touch bass boost. Heres two reasons metal fans should. It makes the sub louder. Gain makes the sub louder. But Bass Boost is just making the low end stuff louder, gain does everything. So Bass boost is better for us. Turn it to -6db and turn down gain a good bit. Guess what else makes bass drum hits less tight? Gain. The higher the gain is, the flubbier it will sound. Do you have an EQ? If so, the 2 settings farthest to left, turn down

some subwoofers have a passive radiator a lot smaller than the sub yah know i saw one...and it moved a lot a lower frequencies..also yeah man strange thing for a sealed box with a passive radiator the exact size of the subwoofer ?? but like i said it has to be the design out of cause just look at that the radiator is the same size as the sub and the box is very small and hear this part the radiator is at no sides or back its on the same side with the sub...probably did that to make the sub act like its in a bigger sealed enclosure yah know because of this vacuum and sealed like has more cone control.

I run a kicker cvr-15 ported & tuned to 22hz. Why 22hz you may ask ? Because that is where it wanted to be tuned for flat response down to 15hz rolling off around 10hz. So the myth that ported is boomy vs sealed is cleaner is B effing S. Sealed is easier and will generally handle more power but however, proper tuning of a ported enclosure will result in more efficient and potentially flatter response. Which in turn will sound better with all music across the board. Btw another decent video ya jewrk off 😁👍

Typically this discussion of Ported VS Sealed causes a crap storm of arguments, which turns into misinformation being presented to the general consumer. I really like that you kept referring to the term subjective.. because THIS is the strongest take-away from this discussion. It all boils down to the design of the enclosure and the end goal of the consumer. Keep the videos coming, it's a great format and delivery style.

I prefer a ported enclosure. T-line specifically, but for the subs I have currently, I'm tuned at 35hz 3.5 cubes. Moves a lot of air, but it doesn't transition in to different frequencies the way a sealed box does. At higher volumes it rolls into different frequencies instead of there being a break in the transition. Although that could very well be because I'm running a half ohm load as a daily. 😂 😂 😂

Sealed & ported have their own place in the world. I've ran/run both. I have a ported box in my car tuned at 29hz, and I have a huge sealed boxed in my home theater , a sealed box can get low but it will be dependant entirely on the subwoofer fs. So if you go sealed get a sub with a low 30s mid 20s fs range.

Good question Justin, generally it's a personal preference, the vehicle involved. it's very much a debated topic. Each direction has different benefits. Generally, facing out the back is best and most common. Facing towards the front will obviously result in more bass being felt, some people want that, but can result in frequency cancellation/muffling. Also, some subwoofers are best down-firing. If I were you, I would try both facing front and rear, and experiment with it to see which direction suits your liking the most.

Will a single rockford fosgate T1 12" in a slim sealed enclosure at 600watts RMS be able to shake my Dodge Challenger. Going for a audiophile setup and using all fosgate power series products. The website recommends this but challengers have big ass trunks and don't want to be disappointed by my bass response.

Ah... the old myths regarding ported is boomy and sealed is tight... A correctly build ported subwoofer can be as tight as any sealed enclosure, emphasis on "correctly build". In general a ported box as way less distortion than a sealed enclosure as when you approach the tuning frequency the movement of the cone gets less and less until you reach the tuning frequency, where almost all sound is coming from the port. In this area the pressure of the box is way higher than in any sealed box, so movement of the driver is almost non existent which reduces distortion created from the driver. As a correctly modelled ported box also has a much lower f3-point you get a spike in the lower notes due to cabin gain. EQ that out with a DSP and the ported box even gets more efficient than it already is. Group delay will be removed with this, too as well as big portions of the so called muddiness. In addition, muddiness and tightness most of the time is a direct correlation of subwoofer to midbass integration. Get the phase of the sub and midbass drivers aligned in between 50Hz and 100Hz and you get all the tightness you need from either box. Drawback on ported boxes... they usually need much more space to compensate for the higher pressure around the tuning frequency. Btw., almost all prefab ported boxes are tuned way too high and are almost always way too small to give satisfactory results.

No it wouldn't as long as there distant apart from each other being to close to each other will cause cancelation and muffling or fading out frequencies. So in a same box application keep both sealed or both ported separate the boxes for 4 subs make 2 ported and 2 sealed have the sealed facing the rear and space the ported box forwards about 1 foot way from the other box of u have the also to do this or stack them and use the same positioning try to space the boxes apart or separate them with a box spacer use 1 inch wood and dynomat the board and use poly foam or some kind of insulation this will separate vibration between the opposing applications and create a better acoustics and will sound perfect with both of the best sound worlds

It sounds greast for metal but I found out after that sealed is the way to go for metal. Not that ported wont sound good too, but you get tighter basss with sealed.

Ported at 35 hertz , 2 12” w7 ‘s , running at 900 Watts rms each.... sealed, does what it’s name portrays, it seals the bass so it’s contained, yes cleaner but you lose a lot of punch and power.
@boominS10
@boominS10 6 жыл бұрын
Auus Worrior you dont lose any power, I fact a sub will have better controll in a sealed enclosure resulting in greater power handling. In a ported enclosur, even real low tuned, will have less come control result in less power handling. As for output in SPL yes having the bass from the rear wave of the sub does lower its output spl

If I stick you in a closed trunk and you scream what happens? Exactly, alot of muffled sound and alot of rattles because of the pressure. You have to have a fold down rear seat to get that air pressure out and the bass out the trunk to the cabin of the car so it will be louder and sound better, Like a pass thru. This is the first thing you need to address, the second is whether sealed or ported. That's your choice.
