Thank you so much for your work! I’m retiring early in 2.75 and am building to a 6% yield. Adding some of these funds to my current dividend growth stock portfolio to hit my yield target has been a game changer! So far I’ve added: HESM, MAIN, CSWC, SVOL & SPYI. A little goes a long way to add to my more traditional SPY, SCHD, JNJ, type of etf and stock holdings. Each month I mix a little of each to keep growing yield but without sacrificing dividend growth! Again, thank you so much for your efforts!!!!!

Congratulations on having what I believe to be the best retirement-oriented KZfaq channel. I like your Top Ten list video episodes and I understand your reluctance to go past your top ten. But I would love to see you share your total list sometime not from the standpoint of copying it, but because of the way you give a reason behind your decision to add and or remove an entry that I feel is where the true educational aspect is found.

Apologies if this has been asked and answered before. I'd watched maybe a dozen of your videos, especially these portfolio reveals which i find quite interesting. Have you done a video where you go through your methodology for deciding what to include in your portfolio? You have quite a few items in there, and there is a variety of yields and areas for diversification. But I am curious why so many? Why not concentrate on the higher yielding on the list? What factors are you looking at when making these decisions. And maybe most importantly - what criteria are you using when deciding when to drop or add something to the portfolio? I understand this ultimately is the secret sauce, but it's also the biggest question many of us struggle with. I would be quite interested to learn more about your approach, as it may inform me as to my own decision criteria. Much thanks and keep it up!

Hi, that's a great question. I don't generally overweight the highest yielding investments because they usually come with higher risk. I'm trying to balance risk vs reward. Choosing investments is an important topic and I plan to make a dedicated video about it.

Volatility is mean reverting. In term structure over 20 years for how long has contango lasted vs backwards? It pays 16 percent which means 16/72 is 4.5 years to payback. Be great for IRA or tax free because you get tagged on income tax. Rather than think of appreciation you need to think of reducing your cost of ownership over time. Also keep powder dry to buy more as I stated its mean reverting high to low backwards to contango.

Thank you. Nice Video. Several of these concern me. PFFA and RQI both have a total return of 6% annually for the last five years. Also, I'm reducing my exposure to HESM as there is concern that the CVX acquisition of Hess may destroy HESM. People have cited this has occurred before.
@armchairincomechannel

Thanks for your feedback. Those concerns are worth thinking about for sure! RQI and PFFA have both suffered under high interest rates. If high interest rates continue that won't change. I'm assuming interest rates will fall one day...but I can't predict the future. I've seen arguments for and against the acquisition of HESM. So far the market seems to love it...based on the price action. I'm in it for the income, not the price action.

I share your preference for High dividend investments that don't erode the principal. I'd looked at the Income Factory approach that you mentioned in one the videos but got concerned with so much capital dilution over time. One comment on your list with the best of intentions: Too much rotation. Between the two revisions you have changed 70% of the portfolio in 5 months. You should avoid coming across as the investment channel with the "flavor of the month" approach. Either conditions have changed DRAMATICALLY over the last few month (they haven't) forcing the changes or the initial analysis were not as robust.
@armchairincomechannel
@armchairincomechannel 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. Your rotation comment is well taken. I didn't sell out of the 5 but I trimmed them back for the reasons given (price appreciation and seeking additional diversification). Going forward I expect less churn over a similar 6 month period.

Do you have any opinions on the transition from a growth oriented portfolio to an income oriented one? Aside from tax concerns Is there a reason not to "big bang" sell off assets to do this transition? We've been looking at annuities to minimize downside and also provide income and this sort of income investing seems like a better way to do that....
@armchairincomechannel
@armchairincomechannel Ай бұрын
I'm not a fan of a sudden transformation of investment strategy for 2 reasons: 1/ The learning curve and 2/ Trying to time the market. A sudden transfer puts a lot of pressure on you to pick the "right" investments in a short time period. The reality is, if you focus on a style of investing you'll gradually get better at it over time. Psychologically, a large sum transfer, creates a win/lose outcome. A gradual, regular transfer over time smoothes out the results. I think annuities are suited to people who don't want to / can't manage their own investments, ie less downside and less upside.
@eefusgoofus
@eefusgoofus Ай бұрын
@@armchairincomechannel Thanks for the insight. Right now we primarily have exposure to the market via target date funds, a few mutual funds and a large amount of index funds. We are not day traders, more of a "set and forget it" style of investor. I think there is still a window for using income investment rather than annuities even if the strategy is a diverse but not tightly managed portfolio of income generating investments, just not sure how we plan to start our journey. I'll consider your opinion strongly.

I guess my question is : How safe we can be during serious real black swan events ( like 2008 ) as far as consistent monthly incomes from these ETF during retirement ? ( I don't call 2020 a REAL black swan event because we had a V shape recovery in less than 5 months )

It costs me 11% in yield (less 5% paid on cash equals 6%) to sit on cash. I think the risk is higher for buyers focused on stock prices than for income investors focused on the income stream. If you want to time the market then now there is more risk of a correction. I don’t try to time the market.
@CalmerThanYouAre1
@CalmerThanYouAre1 4 ай бұрын
Out of curiosity, what realized yield your current portfolio value could you get by with? How much of a dividend cut could you take and still be ok? Usually with high yield funds I tell people to act as if 30% or more of the distribution from time of purchase is a good margin of safety to plan on reinvesting each month and only dipping into when necessary. But it could feasibly get worse than that during a market crash or prolonged downturn.
@armchairincomechannel
@armchairincomechannel 4 ай бұрын
My yield on cost is just over 11% and I'm withdrawing 8% of that and reinvesting the rest. If interest rates fall dramatically then I may need to reduce that to 7%. As for a market crash, I'm focused on stocks and funds that I expect to maintain their dividends (or make minor cuts). I'm not worried about price volatility; mostly focused on the income. During correction periods, my reinvestment dollars will buy at more attractive yields. During the pandemic crash I didn't trust this philosophy enough and I held too much cash. Lesson learned. Reinvesting 30% is good advice! I have no debt and low overhead so that reduces my stress too. To answer your question, I could reduce my travel expenses and live off approx 5% if needed.
@CalmerThanYouAre1
@CalmerThanYouAre1 4 ай бұрын
@@armchairincomechannel that’s an outstanding approach and exactly what I would do as well. Keeping fixed expenses low relative to overall expenses adds a lot of flexibility and resiliency to your financial picture. 💯 Confidently buying shares of your holdings at depressed prices with reinvested income is a cheat code to improve the mental and emotional aspects of retirement. I don’t think this fact is ever emphasized enough in the YT finance world.

Question - when you say "is yielding XX%", what time period are you using? YTD? last 12 months? Projected EOY? And i guess this question comes up a lot - why would someone settle for 10% when the last 12 months SPY has yielded 24% (as of mid June 2024). I understand that you go in and out of positions all the time, so an apples-to-apples comparison might be tough for a 5 year or 10 year time horizons, and i understand the even SPY didn't do great in the 2022 time period. Just trying to understand the outcome of your time spent curating a portfolios like this vs. a well-diversified SPY. Thanks :)
@armchairincomechannel
@armchairincomechannel 2 ай бұрын
When I quote a yield its the trailing 12 month yield (total of the past 12 months distributions divided by the price). If the fund is less than 1 year old then I annualize the yield. SPY is great for accumulating wealth while you're working. In retirement, my goal isn't to continue accumulating the largest nest egg possible. My goal is to maintain and grow a consistent income stream that pays for my life. Those are 2 very different goals. If you could sell SPY at or near its peaks so that you don't need to sell when its in a bear market (eg 2022) then SPY will work in retirement. I don't believe in market timing so that doesn't work for me. Alternatively, you could sell some SPY every month to pay the bills. It would easier when the market is up, and not so much fun when the market is down. Some of it is luck. If you happened to retire at the start of a bear run, then selling your nest egg to pay the bills would suck! I'm guessing you're not yet retired. While paying the bills with a salary, a bear market is annoying but it doesn't affect your life. If you're relying on selling SPY to pay your bills then a bear market can affect your stress level. In hindsight it looks easy, but at the time, there's no way to know if the bear market will last months or years. Thanks for the question!

@@armchairincomechannel first - thank you very much for your considerate reply. all of your points are well taken. for sure, as we age the requirements of the portfolio change as well. and while i understand that it might be difficult to compare, i would be really interested to see how your example portfolio did in 2022 vs. SPY. I'd venture a bet that it probably wasn't the 10-ish % that it is now, and may have fluctuated on a level commensurate with SPY. possibly some of the covered call ETFs might do well in a down market, but you'd have to invest heavily to make a difference i guess. I guess what i am saying here is that i probably need to do a bit of deep-diving into how a bear or at least a ranging market yield for your type of portfolio might compare to a SPY. Certain in a bull market SPY makes sense, but it will suffer in a short term if there is a down turn. Again, thanks!

Thanks Mr. Armchair! Since ARCC has such a presence in PBDC, at what percentage would you consider there to be an overlap, or loss of diversification? Also, I belong to your FB group and there appears to be a fair amount of those that are more "traditional" investors, who aren't fully onboard with hi-yield income investing. As a relatively new investor and someone who is nearing retirement and in need of a nice income stream, I really want my portfolio to contain hi-yield assets. However, there is no shortage of counter arguments that warn against “yield chasing”, especially using alternate, unproven assets. Seems like you made a comment in one of your videos about Steven Bavaria and how you aren’t as aggressive as he is - or something along those lines. So, I guess it is all relative, and it comes down to individual risk tolerance and performing due diligence. Would you be interested in making a video that addresses the differing opinions? I guess it could be just as simple, for those of us that are a little squeamish, as building a portfolio that is a little less aggressive, holding a mix of solid common stocks and alternate assets.

I don't think one is right, or better than the other. It depends on your personality. I like the process and the outcome of income investing so I'm happy to spend time researching and managing 30+ stocks and funds. I understand that another person might dislike the process. Perhaps 30+ investments would deliver better performance, but they'd be happier just holding 3 ETFs and not spending time keeping track of a large portfolio. So in short, 30+ investments works for my goals better than 3. I like the diversification as it reduces risk.

HESM is ok, but if I compare that to my favorite midstreams (ET and EPD), it does not look great. Both ET and EPD have a higher EPS yield and lower valuation. So that will translate into better returns going forwards. Also, although they generate a K1, which is definitely a PITA, in return you pay almost no tax on the dividends so long as you don't sell them. Since you like SPYI for the tax benefits, I'm surprised you don't like ET or EPD over HESM.
