Hi Ashley, I know many places server beef sandwiches with the beef au jus on the side and its referred to as a French dip but in Chicago we ordered it either dry, wet or dipped. Dry - The beef is pulled from the juice with tongs, most of the juice is allowed to drip off, and it is put into a roll. No juice is added, and the sandwich is about as dry as it can get. Wet - The beef is pulled from the juice and immediately put into a roll, leaving the beef “wet”. Then they add another spoonful of beef juice over the top after this step. Dipped - The beef is pulled from the juice, stuffed into a roll, and then the entire roll is dipped into the beef juice, making a soggy, delicious sandwich.

Chicago native here 🤚🏾 I’ve been eating Portillo’s since I was 12 (I’m 41 now) and I’ve worked at two locations (the first one was across from the Rock N Roll McDonald’s where R.Kelly picked up his happy meals) and the other was on Canal and Taylor! That cheese sauce is called “liquid gold” 😩🙏🏾

I've lived in IL my whole life & it is called running a dog through the garden. The beef is best dipped. The bread is soggy but amazing. Their ribs and burgers are also amazing, and never forget either a slice of chocolate cake or a chocolate cake shake. You can never go wrong with Portillo's.

Hi Ashley, if you want to get bread just like that to take home you can find it at many of of our Chicagoland grocery stores, especially at Jewel/Osco as well as Walmart, they might even sell it at Walmart in Toledo. The brand is S. ROSEN'S FRENCH ROLLS (Italian beef rolls). they come pre sliced in either a 6 count pk or 12 count pk of mini rolls and either are around $6 a package. And they are almost always sold on the shelfs in front of the deli counter.

I’m going to Chicago to see Pink this summer and I want to try Portillo’s. They do have one in Sterling Heights, MI and one coming to Livonia, MI.

I love Portillo's. We have them in Tampa so it's crazy to hear you don't have them in Toledo. Their Shakes and deserts are phenomenal too. I think it's called fast casual dining because you order at the counter.

I was born and raised in Chicago and I’ve never heard that saying about the hotdog 🤣🤣 but I LOVE Portillos!!! It’s on my list every time I visit back home. I always get the cheeseburger, fries, cheese sauce, and sometimes the chocolate cake shake. SOOOOO GOOD!!! 😋

That food looked absolutely delicious! Especially the Italian beef and the onion rings. Unfortunately, we in the Northeast and there's none in our neck of the woods.

My polydactyl cats love tortilla French fries. Walter holds them in his little kitty paws with his little kitty thumbs and throws them up in the air lol

Their burgers are delicious too! The Caesar salad with grilled chicken is great as well

I can't eat italian beefs from anywhere but Portillo's...always dipped. ❤The location in my neighborhood is always crazy busy no matter what day it is. I hate the wait time so we don't eat there often. It's definitely a treat when we do go though.

I'm happy to hear you enjoy Chicago's food and people while visiting. I get that it's hot, no car, etc. But Portillos is the last place I'd go for Chicago staples. Hot dogs are best at Gene & Judes or Superdawg. A Polish at Jim's Original hot dog. And an Italian beef at Johnnie's.

You should try the Beef & Cheddar Cuasaunt!!! With a side of gravy?!! OMG!!! The gravy is really for the Italian Beef. Portillo’s is sit down &take out. They have a drive thru that takes your order in person.
