As we approach the biggest challenge of our sailing adventure so far (Portland Bill) we have more boat repairs to get through to make sure that we're as ready as we can be to face this beast.
We get help from two really awesome people who we met through Instagram originally (once again the powers of social media working their magic). We can't thank them enough, but will try again, so Mark & Pippa, thank you for being awesome!
We're going to need the tide, weather, sails and engine, everything on our side to ensure we have a smooth transit around Portland Bill and on to Devon, to continue our exploration of the Great British West Country.
If you'd like to get to know us a bit better then be sure to check out our website at www.cluelessyachties.com
You can also find us on Instagram at sailingcado...
We also have a cool new way of saying thank you to our supporters by including them in our inner circle 'sail mail' group, which you can read about here: www.cluelessyachties.com/supp...

We were more than happy to help! Thank you for the extremely kind words (and the beers too)! It was great to be with you both for out first 'meal out' since March. It's also been a real treat for us to see 'Sonder' in the drone footage. Thanks so much for that :) Wishing you safe travels, and until the next time we see you, take care. ps. Mark's had his hair cut at last!

Rather abstract comment here - often it seems that social media is toxic. It is actually quite wonderful to see the other side of it. I think what we forget is that the toxicity is more an aberration than a reality and that the world may just be full of kindness and camaraderie waiting to be discovered. Thanks for that.

I'm as guilty as the next person for using social media in really unproductive ways, arguing with people, wasting hours flicking through pictures rather than using that time to perhaps learn something, to help someone or improve in some way. Then one day it just dawned on me that we have all the knowledge known to man in the palms of our hands, the kind of power kings and queens would have given anything for throughout most of human history. There's almost nothing that we can't learn about now, the barriers of entry to knowledge have all come down, and there's an army of likeminded people all over the world who are ready and willing to help you understand the information. It's a remarkable time to be alive, in my very humble opinion 😁⛵️

Great episode, you are learning lessons we all learn & it is great to see new ways of solving problems! We were in Weymouth for 3 days last July, waiting for our first trip round Portland Bill. It is very intimidating, but if you go at the right time it is perfectly manageable. We called the NCI (National Coadtwatch) at Portland to get an update on visibility and conditions before we left Weymouth. They are a great asset for all sailors. Fair winds ⛵️

Great video. For novice sailors you are both doing well. I was impressed with what you chose to do in Weymouth bay and how you resolved the diesel bug problem. You are both making the right noises about your passage planning and have learnt not to have 100% faith in your engine, which is good because shit happens at the worst possible time right. The only addition I would make to your 20 litre emergency fuel tank is as well as a feed pipe, you need to put the fuel return from the engine into the 20 litre tank. I think on that engine it is on the leak off rail or the top of the fuel filter, then join the 2 pipes (feed and return from the main tanks) together so you don't end up with 200 odd litres of fuel siphoning into your bilge. If you don't put a return from your engine into the 20 litre tank it will empty it in minutes and pump it into the main tanks via the return pipe. Hope this was useful and all the best for your future travels.

I had same fuel bug issues. After cleaning it all out ( about a pint of sludge) I installed a permanent automatic fuel polisher, run off solar, year round hoovering up the buggers and keeping them out my primary and secondary filters ...happy days

I watched the episode of Carly moving the life raft. You might want to watch one of the episodes that "Sailing Uma" had where they also had an old life raft. They decided to buy a new one but in the meantime they inflated the life raft and actually spent a night in it to see what it would be like if they really had to use one. In the end, they did buy a new one but donated the old one to whatever you call the British life boat people and they did take it for training. They seem to have a lot of knowledge about sailing. Best to you, Jane, Philadelphia

You can polish the existing fuel and save it . Probably too late to tell you that but also if at all possible remove and clean the tanks . Also check the fill inlet , if the rubber seal is gone it will leak water and contaminate the fuel - check every time you fill and if in doubt replace it .

If you put that diesel treatment in your main tanks, don’t forget to drain the tank bottom a couple of days later, you tend to develop more sludge as the dead bugs settle to the tank bottom.

I added an additional fuel filter one time. I didn't quite get everything tight on the fuel line and the motor would run for about an hour before sucking enough air to cause it to stop. After about 5 tries of changing filters because I thought that I had dirty fuel, I drained the tank and still had the problem. About a quarter turn on the fuel line solved the problem. It is usually something very simple that we make difficult

Many good ideas here from experienced mariners who love and want the best for you guys. My first boat had a sick tank many years ago and taught brutal lessons about fuel cleanliness. The best/last solution was fuel polishing and a new tank, followed by the install of a dual filter manifold. Back in the 80's it wasn't common in the smaller personal yacht community [ or so I was told by Parker Hannifin ] but I had one fabricated. It was a primitive but effective affair. My next boat had a fancy and neater job with ball valves that could be switched on/off while underway without turning the diesel off. Of course, many things have gone wrong but never a filter clog again. Always safe to port. Best of luck to you guys. All us old salts are behind you. Feel the good JuJu.

Nicely done story. One thought on the temporary tank or the day tank there is considerable excess fuel that gets returned to the tank from the last/secondary filter this ensures an excess of supply all the way to the injector pump so no starvation but this should be returned to the day tank or you will use the fuel a lot faster than you expect! Hi Guys, great video. Your D2-40 is actually manufacured by Shibaura for Perkins who spray it green then sell to Volvo. It is also sprayed mustard yellow for Caterpillar. It is a very common engine used in small industrial/agricultural machines and generators. I am pretty sure your D2-40 is actually a Perkins 404D-15 with genuine Perkins service items such as filters etc around one-third the cost of your Volvo Penta dealer. Wherever you are in the world, you should have no problem finding Shibaura, Perkins, Caterpiller or Volvo parts for your engine. Good luck on your travels!
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ian, appreciate that. It's actually a D2-55 engine but I think you're right about the parts as when we were in Scotland and our starter motor self destructed, we managed to find a replacement one for about £98 rather than the £500 that Volvo wanted 😳😳
@iancoverdale998
@iancoverdale998 3 жыл бұрын
Smashing. You have the same as me; basic engine is a Perkins 404D-22, Shibaura N844 or Caterpiller 3024c. Whichever continent you land; should have no problem with parts. Just the Volvo specific marine add-ons such as seawater pump and heat exchanger where parts are more difficult. Great you have a new modern engine fitted; takes away a lot anxiety/pain!

I'm glad they're just not too hard to watch, anything after that is a bonus 😬😬

Some absolutely gorgeous cinematography in this film. I'm sure you know already but you only need a tiny drop of diesel bug treatment. Looking at the colour of the oil coming off your dip stick it may be worth thinking about an oil change soon... Glad you got everything sorted, nice work :)

You are humorously bigging up Portland Bill. I felt a little bit treperdatious about it first time but it was a doddle, that was offshore. And then subsequent times via the inshore route which was very easy. Just remember, you need to be within a stones throwing distance off the shore

Appreciate the input, really we do. Do you have a presence on 'emergency' sail choices depending on which way the wind is coming from, or is the head sail just an easy all rounder in this kind of situation because of its size and ease of putting away vs a main?

@@theapplguy it might be a tight squeeze on a smaller electric boat, but what about a smaller generator as the backup for when things don't go to plan? (I guess the pro-electric guy could say 'what happens when you run out of diesel? the electric boat just has to wait for some sun' IMO diesel can't be beaten at the moment for lots of fast motoring, or if you operate on a tight schedule beyond electric range and can't wait for sun/wind to get home)
