Update 8-16-22:
I have used this Portland Chainsaw several times and it has performed well. It is a good option for the homeowner that needs a chainsaw once or twice a year for light duty use. If you need a chainsaw more than that, I would recommend a higher quality saw.
************************************
This is a review of the Portland 14 inch Electric Chainsaw. We go from opening the box to cutting a tree down and cutting it up.
Some of the questions we answer:
Is the Portland Electric Chain Saw a good value?
What comes in the box?
What extra things do you need to add to use it?
Will it cut hardwood trees, how well?
What features does it have?
How much does it cost?
Where can I purchase it?
We answer all these questions and more in the video. If you have any questions, add them to the comments below and we will do our best to answer them

Thanks Wayne. I'm sitting here at Harbour Freight now in RVA trying to make a decision about purchasing a chain saw. Your video really helped, as I had NOT A CLUE about using oil. 🤔😳😄

Plan on picking one up when they open this morning... looks similar to a black and decker model I have .... I’m pretty sure this is cheaper than what I paid for the for mentioned/ chain kept slipping off the B & D I’ve that one number of years haven’t used it a lot but misused it ( getting it in dirt )

Now that you had it for 3 years, how do you compare it with your other chainsaw? May I know which other one you use for most of your work?

I use the large Stihl the most because I heat my house with wood. The electric Portland from Harbor Freight is used for smaller limbs and is still working with no problems. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

I have this particular chainsaw and was in the process of cutting an overgrown pine shrub, and the chain popped twice. Why do you think this happened? By the way, great video! ~ 🙂

Thank you for the kind comment. The most common reason for the chain to come off is it is running too loose. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

What can I use for bar oil... something I might have on hand?

I used 30 weight motor oil for many years and it works well. The advantage of bar oil is it is stickie so it stays on better. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

I bought one of these long enough ago for the 90 day warranty to be long forgotten. It worked well enough to begin with then after some relatively intermittent uses the chain began to slip & ultimately stopped. Looking inside, I found a ~4 inch PLASTIC idler gear between the metal motor gear and the metal chain gear. Metal teeth against plastic teeth. No way the plastic is going to last. The metal gear teeth ate up the plastic gear teeth. It's not worth the money. If you read the one star reviews on the Harbor Freight page, this is mentioned frequently.

Yes the plastic gear should be redesigned but for small jobs this chainsaw works. It in not designed to be a workhorse and the price shows that. Thank you for visiting and nave a great day.

9 amps seems a bit underpowered for anything more than limping ?

Although it can cut larger limbs, the small limbs it what it is designed for. Thank you for visiting and have a great day.

With mines I BELIEVE it will get hot and SOME safety switch will stop it. I will give it about 45sec and go back to cutting. Buying one new or used it on simple jobs will work. Now cutting large rounds to splitwith a axe will be a test coming up shortly. I will get my gas chain saw tune up just in case. 🪓🪓🪓

It stops when it gets too hot as a protection from burning out the motor. It can cut large rounds if you take your time but that is not it's best use. Good luck with your project and have a great day.

Are you using the right gauge extension cord? If you use a cord thats too thin, you will stress out the motor.
