As a kid growing up in NYC in the 80's, the street art was impossible to not be captivated with, It was the golden age of elborate and flashy wall tags. Ultra stylized tags still kinda rule the street art word. At same time I'm lucky I survived NYC in the 80's🙂

I'm with you. I think 4 mil could do quite a bit more for housing, hunger, teachers... I'm not saying people who don't like graffiti are in the wrong. I get the affect that graffiti can have to property value and crime. But just pouring money into painting over graffiti to only have it re-tagged...it seems a little futile.

They should make it Legal. that will lower tagging by kids who do it because its quick illigal and no one really gets arrested by it. Do a festival, and make some walls legal graffiti walls. This makes it less desireble to do it somewhere else too. Also, yeah Grey concrete walls are pretty...sigh...

I keep looking at Paris and how that city is collaborating with graffiti artists. If there was a designated space, like you said. I think it'd do wonders for the mindset. There's no chance in hell the city can stop graffiti. But if the city looked to Paris (and other cities) of public "graffiti walls", I think it might be a possible better solution than just spending 4 mil to paint beige.

I’ll bet you didn’t know that all graffiti in PDX started with “TRUST HESUS”. I don’t who this MF was but it was everywhere. In all stretches of the city I’d say early 80’s… Then it just. Stopped. Must’ve been some homeless dude who died but it was a good five year thing

My city did something really clever. On hotspots were a lot of graffiti was done they just mate there own Artwork over it. They mate aweseom charcters or backgrounds like flowers or a oceaon. It takes the city a week or two but becouse they take there time and paint something butiful over it nobody sees it as graffiti but art and nobody dares to go over it with a throwy or even a decent pice. That just the graffiti rule dont cross.

@sketchypeoplepdx
@sketchypeoplepdx 6 күн бұрын
@glohbk6827 good analogy. I agree with you. But I also get that the city has to do something to appease the outcry for graffiti cleanup. 4 mil won't do much in the long run. I don't think the city understands the drive and need of human public expression. If the city would try and create a graffiti space (like Paris has) or something to extend an olive branch of collaboration, I think it'd possibly move the narrative in a more positive way.
@intheneighbourhood
@intheneighbourhood 13 күн бұрын
It would behoove the city to actually take those spots and allow for mrual/purposeful graffetti. I'd presume it'd have to be preapproved work or whatever, make sure it's nothing offensive or whatever. Tagging though is egocentric and in other cases, gang related, territorial stuff. Painting over it is the dumbest thing imaginable. Even our school salmon mural was a utilization of very narrow concrete barriers down the hillside. Concrete is ugly, fill it with nature, native plants, and artwork that isn't just trashy. There's a lot of trashy work in portland but there's also a fair amount of good work, and it's the good work that shows what it could be if someone bothered.
@sketchypeoplepdx
@sketchypeoplepdx 13 күн бұрын
@intheneighbourhood I wish there was a spot in the city for full on legal takeovers on a large scale. It's a tricky subject for sure. Fun to talk about with all the different views.
@gr8fullytedicated

I think there's a big difference between art murals, graffiti art, and tagging. I have a very good friend--Codex Urbanus--who is one the more well-known graffiti artists in Europe and he explained/showed me the differences. To me, tagging just seems to be someone who has an oversized ego letting everyone know he/she is there. Art is different. There's a street in the Belleville neighborhood of Paris, Rue Dénoyez, that is strictly dedicated to graffiti art, art on the walls of all the buildings along the entire street. The art on the walls of the building that hosts the once-a-month Portland Night Market in the summer has very nice art on it. It's hard for me to tell if it's contracted or graffiti. Kinda looks like both. You make some very interesting points in this one. Thanks.
@sketchypeoplepdx
@sketchypeoplepdx 13 күн бұрын
@gr8fullytedicated that Paris area is great! Paris really understands the arts and the need for public expression. It's a very complex subject and I enjoy the different views. I love the Portland Night Market and those walls.
