Portland is the only place that can bike like western europe. I don't get why more people don't do it. You bike 5 miles to work at the most, save money, save the environment, and get good excersize. You win every way, why would a car be better?

Bike-friendly is an attitude, not an infrastructure statement. Having great cycle lanes doesn't make your city bike-friendly, any more than having great housing makes it a cool place to live. It all about respect and how you go about sharing your space. Portland sounds cool in both respects :)

@velodudect I work for myself. It's not my problem and HAHA no. Portland itself is huge, let alone all the suburbs. Beaverton, tualiton, hillsboro, etc etc. Many jobs are out there and the fact that portland is covered in hills and trees making the roads windy doesn't help. Also, the weather is rainy, cloudy, dark, and extremely windy 9 months of the year. Any thing other than cars are simply not practical.

I live in Columbus, Ohio. It's mostly flat here and wind is moderate to low and there isn't too much precipitation. I want to move to Oregon but what you're saying opens my eyes because one of my many jobs is as a bicycle courier

In time, as you keep improving your bicycle facilities and do more outreach.. the people who have been lacking education about proper cycling since it is has been given so little attention prior, will start riding properly as ridership goes up. Long Beach needed this. No doubt at all. Happy to hear it will be worth the higher rent now since livability will go up with better cycling.

@velodudect great points Velo - and these are universal points - I am faster cycling to work (in sunshine, hail, rain or snow) than driving from my home in Edinburgh to my place of work - 9 miles away. Infact I can usually be showered and dressed before folk arrive on the bus dispite having set off at simiar times. It's much more interesting - Winters here are dark and dank - the bus is mind numming. Cycling gives me, as I am sure it does you, a real rush - which more people should experience.

Makes me proud of ptown, but massivly dissapointed this is even newsworthy because its rare to see in usa. Western europe owns our faces in this regard, look up netherlands vids on cycling, more people bike there than drive by huge margin

Interesting vid - i am a keen cyclist - with BMX, MTB and hybrid (for commuting around Edinburgh - Scotland). I hope this is a trend which flurishes in the states - where both BMX and MTB were born!

@Xankar1 See other response first. One solution could be Electric hybrid velomobiles. They are an enclosed small car (sort of) which you pedal, with an electric assist motor. The whole thing weighs only around 40 KG (about 100 lb). This is a better vehicle for around a city. We should also increase density in cities to make trips shorter and more viable for bicycles. Sure there may still need to be cars to some degree, but if people think that we can use electric cars like now, forget it!

@Xankar1 The problem with cars, electric or not, is the concept. With a car most of the energy used, is involved in transporting the car, because that is the heaviest part. With a bicycle most of the energy involved is used in transporting its occupant. To power a car on electricity to go 30 miles, you could use the same electricity to power several appliances for a month. Its inefficient, and not feasable without gasoline.

I don't know how it is in Portland, but in California the law mandates that a cyclist can have full use of a car lane where a bicycle lane is not available. Also, you may merge into automobile lanes to make use of a left turn lane. As for blowing through signs, if no cars are stopped at the intersection as I approach, I go right through. It's hard (or annoying) to get your momentum going again once you stop on a bike. Doing that every block on side streets gets old really fast.

@420witchdoctor At least there are some smart people still around. I think velomobiles are part of the answer as some have roofs to keep rain out, plus they are very efficient.

What's wrong with New Urbanism? And yes, I would say Dubai's buildings are also green, they are some of the best designed, most energy efficient buildings in the world. I don't understand what's wrong with either of them?

Bicyclists already have all the rights of cars on all roads with speed limits less than 40 mph. However, these roads aren't accessible to everyone. Children and less experienced riders are enabled by investments in cycling infrastructure. If I had it my way, there'd be a Copenhagen style tax on owning a car. With the right infrastructure, it simply isn't necessary.

@Xankar1 Velomobiles are a good answer there, they are like a small car, you pedal, some even have electric assist, and a roof. Seriously though, I have cycled in the rain, its not that bad, wear a rain jacket.. Look, sometimes a car is good, but people need them on far fewer times then they think. Its car culture thats the problem, its also the idea that to go anywhere the first thing people turn to is cars, and we design cities around cars, not people.

I think it's great that people bicycle around town. But I think the culture would benefit from more people learning the rules of the road. I can't even count the number of times I see cyclists not wearing any safety gear or not using arm signals at all.

You're required by law to have liability insurance. Do you know why that is? Just in case a car causes another person injury. Do you know how many times likelier a car is to cause someone else injury than a bike? I'll tell you it's far more than 100 times in terms of total economic damages, which kind of makes the need for insurance minimal. Also, taxes to pay for the roads come from state taxes which comes from real estate taxes and sales taxes. EVERYBODY pays those, including cyclists.

I agree we should regulate. Tickets can and should be given for extreme situations. They are in many cases. The speed limit part though...let's be realistic. Middle lane is the safest option under many circumstances and only holds you back a few seconds. Not a big deal. People need to slow down a little anyway (clearly) Lighting should be mandatory front and rear at dusk and riders should be ticketed. I NEVER go without a light on in dark.I cannot see people on he road and I am on a bike!

Get yourself on a bike and you can run stop signs and hold up traffic too! You won't get hit because you'll be paying attention. There sure as hell aren't any jobs here.

Actually I've observed most cyclists in Portland staying in bike lanes. When that option is not available it is totally legal for a cyclist to ride in the road. Also it is not only dangerous for cyclists to ride in sidewalks in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic it's also difficult to navigate a sidewalk, and it creates more wear and tear on your bike. Having been a former auto driver, I know cyclists are more aware of you than you are of them. You are the one without respect. We SHARE the road

I've only been to Portland a couple of time, but my impression is that while bike infrastructure is better there than in most places, the city itself isn't that densely populated and pretty spread out, making it so that you'd still need a car, although you could do many trips by bike.

Matt Sezer ~ Actually compared to the average US city, it’s much more compact. They have put policies in place to prevent Portland from sprawling. There is actually a boundary around the entire city and the city cannot expand outside those limits. They have also extensively added onto their light rail system (MAX) and that system is one of the most extensive & efficient light rail system in the US which extends out into all of the suburbs. They have also created and expanded an inner city streetcar system. Compared to the average city in the US, they have done a pretty good job! 👍

This is great...how about enforcing a permit and cyclist insurance for the bikers. What this report doesn't tell is that these bikers do not obey the laws of the road and blow through red lights ALL THE TIME!! Something needs to be done to put some accountability on the biker.

@Jarek4 People only need cars, because they live in cities designed around cars. We would not need private cars in cities if cities were designed with distances that are on a "people" scale. Medium density housing, as in Europe encourages cycling. Electric trains, and bicycles can do most of the work of cars. Sure we may need small delivery trucks, and emergency vehicles in cities. But when cities are designed the right way, there is almost no need for private cars.

@KrunchyJD No, I'm annoyed at you because you think we live in a perfect world. The WORLD depends on cars and oil. The WORLD needs cars to operate and until someone else makes something better tTHE WORLD will stay the same. Multiple times things were better how ever every time the oil companies buy them out. You need to be realistic. People aren't just going to stop using their cars. Especially since it's one of the most needed things just to get to work 50 miles away.

Sad. Not everyone disobeys the laws. Trying to make it cost more to ride will not benefit anyone. It will cost tax payers more $ to create a mandatory permit...keep in mind that this would mean hiring people to run this operation, regulation, etc. Not cheap...you will not reap benies. Bicycling does not effect the air, roads, noise levels, and costs pennies on the dollar to implement and maintain the infrastructure for compared to the car that we all pay for dearly. Reward them.

@trousien The biggest user of oil is transport. Other things use oil, but transport is the primary user. You can jump up and down and argue all you want but the reality is that bicycles are more efficient around a city then cars, and dont cause the pollution, and obviously use less oil. Americas addiction to big SUV's is the problem, and has lead to things like the gulf oil spill. I dont shave my legs, and I dont wear lycra, but equally I dont pay much attention or look at those who do.

@pavilionking06 Unfortunately the government has a monopoly on roadbuilding. Illegal and unconstitutional in my opinion. The monopoly closes off all competition and makes all roads look bad. By the way, when people complain about roads, they want better roads, not your half-assed non-solutions. None of Portland's mass transit options can even handle a fraction of daily commuters and no amount of money can change that hard fact.

@spndall07 Car drivers need to take responsibility for their actions, and this includes the amount of pollution they generate, and the enormous cost of the infrastructure for cars. Usually if bike riders dont ride in a so called bike lane, it is because it is unsafe, (being doored ). When car drivers dont cut cyclists off, when they ride in the bike lane, more will do so.

@BBdaWolfy As a person who cycles for transport a good deal of the time, it is fair to say that I have hatred toward those that think it is their god given right to put my life at risk, with agressive driving. Imagine if you walked up the road, and every day some nutter in a car drove their vehicle close to you at high speed. What would your attitude be? I have studied the facts around cycling. If people can offer intelligent comments to suggest where i'm wrong I will listen.

The fact is, it is cars are the ones causing the pollution, killing people on the road. American addiction to oil is part of the cause of the oil spill in the gulf of mexico.

@fll10743 In Europe it is safer to cycle, because there are more cyclists. The more cyclists there are, the safer it is. Cyclists who break the law should be prosecuted, that is true, however, as a motorist it is your responsibility as the more dangerous vehicle to not hit them.

@SaucySTL Following this logic we would see everyone driving around in tanks and also morbidly obese, oh wait that happens now! If cycling is not safe, then it should be made safe. Cycling promotes health, produces almost zero pollution, and reduces the requirement to tarmac the landscape. Cycling is good in every way. Also you neglect to see that in countries such as the Netherlands kids ride their bikes to school in safety. Also the more cyclists there are the safer it is for everyone.

@pavilionking06 How is that a tangent? My argument has always been that road expansion is a fairer, more cost-effective way to spend the transport budget to solve the commute problem. As opposed to your selfish, politically/environmentally driven non-solutions which benefit only a few people and solves nothing. The fact you brought up the streetcar is hilarious because that is exactly the worst example of useless spending to benefit a few at the cost of others. I lol'ed.

Is the rock bottom ridership offset by huge taxes levied on residents along the line? I didn't think so. So my money is used to subsidize your selfish desire for cheap transport and satisfy your smug anti-car fascism. Just because I work have to commute to Hillsboro to work. Isn't government wonderful?

@Jarek4 If people drove cars less, then there would be less requirement to drill in 3 kms of water and ground. Less mistakes. Sure BP has the majority of responsibility, but American Car culture and hence oil dependence must take its fair share. Your just getting pissed off because you know I am right. I dont hate all American's, I hate the culture that emphasises car use over all other forms of transport. You should be thanking cyclists for creating less oil dependence, and that is the issue.

Investing in the future is a codeword for anti-car fascism and statist control over people's lives, over where they live and work. And believe it or not, corrupt politicians and greedy developers exist in other US cities as well. I am not impressed. By the way, I grew up in Hong Kong and it has a profitable, *PRIVATE*, high ridership subway that pays for itself (unlike US system). See, it can be done!

sure, as soon as we have infrastructure like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, or hell... ANY well planned European city... tax them. The idea is to get more people out of their cars. Cars are more dangerous than bikes. Cars pollute. Cars kill people and others more vulnerable to them (pedestrians, bikes, etc). So, you create safer facilities for those who do not chose to endanger others with a car. That is part of the responsibility of driving. Many that bike, 80%+ in fact, OWN a car...they pay.

Dear New York urbanites, You will find that most of Oregonians do not care for your collective type of socialization and "thinking". Yes, you will find a small safe haven in the middle of urban Porland, but you are not welcome here by the rest of us. The real Oregon is not a culture that supports the urban herd mentality, so please stay home. As time progresses you will be treated with more hostility by those of us who value our state and independence. . Just a word to the wise.

I don't think Portlanders have much of a choice. Portland is the most car-unfriendly city I've seen. The streets are narrow. There's a shortage of parking. The layout of the streets is confusing and often illogical. So yeah, Portland is a natural for bicycles. I'm all for it.

I'm an Oregonian. 5 years ago I put my bike on the Amtrak to Portland and spent a week vacation there, cycling all over the place seeing everything I could, all by myself, and had a wonderful time. I have always LOVED Portland. It's a total shithole now that I've completely given up on. I only go there for business when I absolutely have too, and I leave as soon as I can. I don't even want to eat a single meal there.
