PORTO HELI is a summer resort in the south-eastern part of Argolis on the Peloponnese Peninsula. It is situated in Argolic Gulf opposite the island of Spetses, 40 km southeast of Nafplio. Porto Heli owes its name to the bay which was once abundant with eels, so eels are the source of the city's name (in Greek "heli" means eel). There are two names in use: Porto Heli and Porto Cheli - both names are correct.
Already in antiquity, there was an important commercial port here, and the bay itself has always been considered a safe port and it is still so, which is why it is an ideal place for sailing enthusiasts as a starting point for sailing in the Peloponnese and the surrounding Saronic Islands (the closest we have is in Spetses, but Hydra and Poros are also nearby).
The town of Porto Heli itself is quite touristic, but more popular among other Greeks than foreign tourists. Of course, you can meet tourists from abroad here, but they are more individual tourists who travel on their own, so it is an ideal place for lovers of peace, because this area has not yet been flooded by mass tourism with travel agencies. The village has several supermarkets as well as a nice walkway along the port with shops, restaurants and cafes and expensive yachts on the other side.
For some time Porto Heli and the surrounding coast have been called the Cote d'Azur of Greece. This is due to the fact that it is the place where the richest Greek families rest. Greek millionaires, actors, athletes and even the former king of Greece - Constantine II of Greece have their summer residences among pine forests and olive groves with private beaches.
If someone is not satisfied with luxury, then near Porto Heli, on a hill with a stunning view of the entire bay, there is the most expensive hotel in Greece, or maybe one of the most expensive in Europe, the AMANZOE hotel. There are also private villas, where, among others: Michael Jordan , Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham spent their holidays in privacy.
