It's the final and the three remaining artists hope to impress the judges as they paint celebrity sitter Tom Courtenay and win a career-changing £10,000 commission
Portrait Artist of the Year is a competition art show aiming to find the best portrait painter of the year.
Each episode features a regional competition and contestants are challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters.
As the competition goes on, three artists will remain, and these finalists will have their work displayed in the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London. The winner eventually receives a $10,000 commission to become a permanent part of the British Library!

I felt so moved at seeing the finished portrait, I wept a couple tears. I am an underachieving artist and someone who understands the deep process of seeing into another's soul, then bringing to concretion, the authentic person inside. I completely agree with the idea of drawing being on the same level as painting. For too long, drawing has been seen as precursor to painting. The winning portrait and even more so, the commission piece of the judge, is masterful. It takes the possibilities of drawing to the level of sublime. I like Liam's work, but it's not the same level as mastery as the drawing.

@@kissedbysun2517 The focus of the judges through the competition is to see the skill and versatility of the artist. I'm not sure i agree with the judges but it was not a bad choice... He's very talented and turned out some beautiful work. I thought for sure they would have picked the woman... just knowing the judges i thought they would have went with her. So pleased they did not... I find her excess use of turps gimmicky and faded and just not pleasing to my eye.. So now you know who i think should have won but he's more of a traditional artist and you know by now they do not pick those. Knowing their preferences it was very surprising they put him through in the first place. Anyway he would have been my pick... On to the next season...

@@johnsterman77 I was taught to make an underpainting by mixing 1 part damar varnish,1 part turps and 1 part linseed oil. It's a thin liquid that you then add pigment to, can be any color but usually an earthtone like yellow ochre or indian red. Can use prismatics too. Looks to me like she used burnt umber. You can see how drippy and messy this stage is but it allows you to move things around finding the likeness without committing to a defined shape. It's sketching with paint. As you feel happy with the form you start to add color and continue refining shape and stronger color as you go. Using an underpainting is an old classical way to go when the clock is not ticking. The more modern way, thanks impressionists, is to directly apply the "finished color directly on the canvas, ala prima. That's what everyone on the show does because , 4 hours....
@susankelemen9764
@susankelemen9764 2 жыл бұрын
@@donnawoodford6641 Well sort of...An underpainting is sketching with paint. It's the start of the process to define the form without committing right away. Usually a mixture of damar varnish,turps and linseed oil is created to which you add a pigment , usually an earth tone like ochre or indian red. Looks like she used burnt umber. It's a very wet messy , drippy goo and you can see all the drips on her canvas. You can keep working this until you get the likeness you like and then you start to add color. On these shows the artists work directly with color from the start because with an underpainting you can only go so far until you have to let that goopy mess dry a bit. 4 hours just isn't enough time to work that way. Hope that helped.
