Follow some of the many observations that an artist makes while creating a portrait sculpture of a specific individual.
Clay modeling is an additive process, meaning that I start with nothing and build. The opposite is true sculpture in stone or wood: subtracting. Different approaches lend different effects.
As I put little odd shapes of clay onto this portrait bust, I am attempting to be precise. What I mean by that is that as my point of view moves around a form, I may see, for example, that a cheek profile that looks plump and round from one point of view, may almost become a straight line or very slow curve as I move around to a different point of view.
Thus, I am not just indiscriminately putting on a ball of clay. I want it to bulge out in the right places, pulling back in others. I feel that I am constantly moving around the work, creating the forms.
Often I am examining the profile edges, for if all the profiles look good, well... your work is done, no?
