nice one blunty ! ... i bought a classic lens [not this brand] but did so because of the completely different shooting experience , and the different look to the pics i take with it, i recommend it to anyone who loves taking pictures.and as you have said, doesnt cost the earth to buy,and will still be worth its value if you were to sell it on.

I got two of them from 57 and 56 year Although 57's has many scratches on a front element, images are very comparable. And there is difference in coating color, so the later version gives yellow tint to photos.

I have two of these plus one with a Contax mount that came with a very strange MFT adpater (this Contax one requires manually screwing the lens in and out from the adapter to focus...a bit tricky but workable). The two in M39 are the Red P types with optics and body in excellent and mint condition, respectively. Wonderful little lenses, and wonderful for the money. Also have the Jupiter 11 M39 and Helios 44-2 M39, but these are for Russian SLR bodies. The difference is that with the SLR M39's, you can use a cheap thread adapter (the ring's inside diameter thread is M39 female, the outside diameter thread is M42 male) to take them effectively to M42...where regular M42 -MFT adapter or a M42-MFT Focal reducer can be used. The M39 Lenses that are made for rangefinders, like the Jupiter 8, cannot be adequately adapted to M42. Therefore, I cannot use them with either my M42-MFT focal reducer or the M42-MFT adapters. This is due to an ever so slight difference in flange distance between the rangefinder and SLR bodies. I have tried it and the focus is predictably off. Bottom line, I only use an "L39-M4/3" adapter for these rangefinder lenses. The Russian lenses are lots of fun to use, have special character, and are usually a nice conversation piece in the field or on display. Also have the Jupiter 3: 50/1.5 (CLA'd near mint, M39 rangefinder), Industar 61: 50/2.8 M42 Macro, Industar 50/3.5 M42, and last but certainly not least, the Jupiter 9 85/2.0 M42. Other great non-Russian M42 SLR lenses that I own, (in order of my preference): 1) Auto Sears (Tomioka): 55/1.4 2) Super Takumar: 50/1.4 (7 element variant) 3) Super Takumar: 55/1.8 PS: If it isn't obvious, I binge shop vintage lenses every 3 to 4 years.

Is it m42 or m39? The adapter is sleek and smooth, unlike my m42 that kinda big and too flashy

A good review of a great lens- I would like to defend the later versions of the J-8. I've had several, always end up selling them to a photographer. I've modified two of them for 18" minimum focus, 0.65m RF coupled. KMZ (The Trapezoid logo) kept the production of the J-8 throughout the run, I've found the optical quality was well maintained- much better than the Jupiter-3. The Tabbed version that you have, made up until 1960 or so- are the best. The focus mount of the "non-rotating" "Non-Tabbed" version - I've seen lots of deviation in the quality. The "Single-Helical", rotating version is a simpler design, not as much deviation. I've compared 1980's Black J-8's against a 1950s Nikkor 5cm F2 in Leica mount- compared well. A "CLA" with new lube on the helical will get rid of the rough focus. Well worth doing.
