How great was this to see. Kettering in all its beauty, sadly now gone. This was all.my lovely memories. Even the stone wall, outside the Tech, reusing stone from an old demolished farm, I believe, in rothwell.

Great footage here. I was 26 in 1971 and seeing how the town centre had it's heart ripped out by building the Newland Centre. This put an end to the much loved weekend market as well, as the shifting of shoppers from the Library bus pick up/ drop off to elsewhere in the town. The busy town centre didn't recover after 1971.

The Newland centre was built in the late 70's and the market was still thriving in the 90's. It was these large supermarkets that appeared everywhere that did away with the market.

Loved this film. Great that someone had the inclination to make it at the time. The Wickstead Park water slide and trains are still there! I lived in Kettering for ten years and I still own a property in Field Street Avenue. I think Kettering is great to this day!

We were close friends of John and Pauline. My father was Mike Turner and was a member of the Kettering & District Cine Club and spent a lot of time with John making films. It was great to hear Johns voice again after so many years. I live in Chesterfield now and really miss the Kettering of the 50's, 60's & 70's.. I have a number of dad's cine films copied onto video including a family wedding filmed by John and Pauline at St. Andrews church in 1975.

There used to be a really primitive electronic map board in the marketplace around this time. You pressed a button with the name of a place on and it lit a light bulb on a map. It was very futuristic :-)

This has bought back some very personal memories for me as my late father is driving Cheyenne and those few seconds of the film to me are priceless. Went round that lake countless times on the train and loved every time and we went around a few years back with all the health and safety door on the carriages. This is form many is the kettering of our youth and many happy places now have long gone Thanks again for uploading

How our town has changed. Sadly not for the better. Much of the town as it is in this video, reminds me of how it was in the 80’s when I was a kid. The exceptions being the Newlands centre. I love how busy Kettering was back then! Now it’s just a ghost town 😔

What you just said reminds me of my home town in Wales. I grew up in the former mining town of Bargoed, near Cardiff, in the 50's, 60's and 70's Bargoed was a bustling town, market, three cinema's and the pit mainly provided the economy. Now Bargoed Colliery is completely gone with a bypass in it's place, the three cinema's, well two have been demolished and the one that remains became a bingo hall in the 80's, now this too is disused and has asbestos. The market place on the Thursdays is gone. The decline started sometime in the 1980's, now, as you say about Kettering, Bargoed is very much a ghost town, I moved from there in November 2015 to Poole in Dorset.

I was four years old in 1971...and have hazy fleeting memories of the Kettering described..."a town looking to the future"...Kettering a decade later and through my teen years was a dismal place - peak Thatcherism, no future...NF skinheads on nearly every corner, hanging out at the shelter in the park, blaming the wrong people for the misery, attrition, and decline. It was pleasing to watch the film, of a place I left a lifetime ago and will never and can never return to...

I doubt we'll see the return of English market town centres. They lasted a thousand years but have been seen off in the last 20. Town centres desperately need reimagining.

Very enjoyable and nostalgic but the music and commentary does make it sound more 1941 than 1971.

@@melaniecrouch7789 Glad that you still have John and Pauline's films. We know that David Ellingworth saved them but did not know if he past them on to anybody. Would love to copy them on to video and put them on youtube with the other ones. I got to meet John when I was 15 at the cine club. we were friends till he died. I asked Pauline if I could borrow some of John's film to show at the Rushton Cine club. That's when I put them on to a DVD for her. John made some lovely holiday films of there trips to Norway. I'm glad the films brought back a nice memory

@@melaniecrouch7789 Do you still live in Kettering. I can remember the carnival films. The mayor one maybe of Cecal Brown who was a member of the cine club. They were both loved twining with Lahnstein. The cine club was also twined with the Lahnstein club. I live in Peterborough now, I come to Kettering every Friday to see my mum. You can call me on 01733 708239. Love to meet up. Was there an old scrap book of the club with the films? All the best

@@melaniecrouch7789 Did your dad help John with the script? Did he get to see the set in the club room? if he did the flashing lights were my disco lights. The club is still just about going and the secretary Sheila Waters lives at 37,Lewis House, Carrington Street. She has been with the club for over 40 years. I'm hoping you have the Star Trek film.
