it's good, but it is not her. the painting is really nice, but she needs to improve her skills (i.e. forehead, nose and right face half shading, eyes, cheeks, neck). i believe that your foundation is wrong, the sketch you made at the beginning already shows facial mistakes (i.e. eye position compared to the ear, which resulted in a different nose, mouth and cheeks, and a different forehead). maybe you can improve that? because the painting shows anybody, but not that hoyeon jung that is a korean model. in fact, the painting looks almost western, but the reference photo does not @Chris Hong Art

Hey Grips Why’d you make this as a reply to someone instead of as an actual comment? And also, this is a study to help her ease into painting with watercolors. She wasn’t trying to make it absolutely perfect, or else she would’ve spent more time. She also mentioned she was going on a trip so maybe she was rushing a bit. Can you please not be so harsh? And what do you mean the painting looks western but the photo does not?
@MasterofScrutiny
@MasterofScrutiny 5 жыл бұрын
@@Soopknits the face has westernized features for instance the eyes are rounder and wider spaced than the model's. Although I find the painting beautiful, it's of a younger girl, maybe the model's little sister.

You can make shadows in a cool tone or in a warm tone. If you look closely on her forehead (the shadow part in the center) or her cheeks, you can see that the shadows are blueish/ purplish. It is is nice contrast to the warm sun and hair.

Does your painting even have an ugly phase? It literally looks good as soon as you put the first brushstroke, that's amazing! Such a beautiful study. As about letting go a bit of the control when it comes to using watercolours, I totally get it, I started letting go a bit recently and I saw a huge difference. It looks more creative when you do, and you can show details by doing less, it is just a bit hard to no overdo it and ruin it in the end haha. :) Have a nice day!

If I want to dull an area to draw the eye towards somewhere else (e.g. the neck) I find using a thin base layer of dirty water (painting water, not whatever you may find in a puddle or in the kitchen sink) and then either drop your colors or letting the layer dry and glaze over it. Zbukivic does something similar with his landscapes where he starts his painting with a wet wash of grayed painting water.

This is awesome and extremely informative and helpful, especially to those that have a better/easier time learning it visually! I‘ve been having trouble doing portraits, especially when it comes to edges and transitioning colors (like letting the colors bleed together), and watching the way you do and explain it makes it so much clearer. Aside from that, it‘s super relaxing to watch. Definitely needed to watch it after coming home from a long day. So.. Thank you!!!
