Join Daniel Norton OnSet as he shows you how to create one of the most requested types of portraits from commercial photographers, clean white backgrounds. “Blowing out” your background while still maintaining contrast on your subject and overcoming the softness that minor lens flare can cause, to create some beautiful and simple portraits.

Wow .... The most valuable tip for me was pointing the lights at opposite corners and it was almost a throw away comment but makes so much sense. You may have just solved an issue I have always had with making the white totally even. Can't thank you enough.

Oh wow great video, Daniel Norton is very good at showing and explaining lighting! I will dare say since you guys at ADORAMA have so much gear at many price points that even on a budget with the Flashpoint Budget Studio Monolight this can be done. Thanks ADORAMA for all the great and informative videos on your channel!

Once again.. really timely. I kinda hate shooting on white.. mostly because I don't do it well. But I got up in the studio last week to try and work it out. Sooner or later (probably sooner), someone's gonna want a white background. My result was.. okay. But I thought it lacked contrast. They always do. Now I might know why. I _will_ be trying again tonight. Thanks Daniel! (and Erica ;-) )

Thanks Daniel. Some Photo Judges deduct points for exceeding 250 White as they say that the image won't print properly above that. Have you ever had any feedback from Print labs to that effect?
@rsmith02
@rsmith02 3 жыл бұрын
You need to work with print labs to give them the type of file they need. It is trivial to increase or decrease the white point in post.

I see how you place the cursor over the background using Capture One and it gives a reading. Is that possible with Light room Classic, I just never really looked. For lighting teams I will just take like three light meter readings across where the group will stand and see if I get the same f stop. Thanks Adorama for these videos, shop there frequently and looking at a Nikon 300mm FD lens there.

In Lightroom it will show as 0 to 100 (%) where 0 is pure black and 100 is pure white. You will see it below the histogram top right when hovering your cursor over the image. There might be a setting where you can change that to 255,255,255 format - I have never looked for it

Daniel, if your flash is blowing out the background and you are already at lowest power (1/128 on a speedlight, fro example) and are still getting flare with nowhere else to go, does that mean the next step is to close down the aperture? Thanks!

255 is maximum value 8-bit color channel can have. If all three color channels are 255, the displayed color is pure white. 254 is close enough to fix it in post-process.

You are shooting digital. As long as your subject isn't white or wearing white (white as in a white object, not a Caucasian person) all you have to do is get pretty close to blown out white (or as we used to call it, base white). Somewhere around 3 to 3.5 stops over. At 4 stops you are skirting the edge of flare and loosing contrast in your subject. Since you are going to be in your editing software anyway its a simple matter to select the background and fill with 100% white. Problem solved. Oh, but wait. No one talked about wrap-around. The light coming off the background has to be less (when metered at the subject) than the foreground lights or you'll get a white, blown out halo around your subject. Yes, the background is a light source and on anything with texture there is some wrap around from lights coming from the rear. Product photographers frequently use this to put defined edges on dark subjects on a gray or neutral background. So, now you have a choice, dial down the background light, power up your key light, or pull the subject away from the background . It also helps if you flag off as much background as you can and use a masked compendium type lens shade or flags to minimize lens flare. On white seamless, I don't know if they are even in business, but "white" was Studio Specialties 107 white. Look at 5:00, you can see the flare on the back of the key light reflector and off to the right against the black boards. If you look carefully, you can also see the wrap around on the subject in the following shots also. Which brings me to the biggest question. When is someone going to pay for a 2/3 or 3/4 shot of a person? When they are a celebrity, sure. Or someone looking for a head shot for their card or portfolio but other than that??? What is usually the subject (paid advertising) is what is ON the person. They are a living display rack. That means lighting for the MERCHANDISE. Wanna have some fun? Try shooting black furs on a Caucasian model against a white background. Have fun, that's a tight rope to get detail in the fur, not blow out the model and fight the flare. (hint, yes, it can be done). Cheers!

This is too funny. Awful looking final photo. Nowadays everybody calls himself, or herself, an expert professional photographer.

This comment is too funny. Nowadays everybody calls themselves an expert and leave negative comments on videos without explaining WHY they think its an "awful looking final photo" or any suggestion how it could be improved. Probably because you dont know. At least it made you feel so much better with yourself, right?
