Origin of European Portuguese. Portuguese is an old language and the written form can be dated back to the 12th century. Vulgar Latin, which was spoken on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula, (now Portugal and the Spanish province of Galicia) basically replaced all previous local languages.

@ Peter Pan Both Spain and Portugal were one country under muslim rule as was before the muslims arrived in the Iberian peninsula. Hispania (the roman way of saying spain) was what it was. Most of the people were Muslims and most of the people became muslim. You say sharia is not compatible with our European values? This is what prince Charles of England had to say about muslim rule in iberia- • “Many of the traits on which modern Europe prides itself came to it from Muslim Spain. Diplomacy, free trade, open borders, the techniques of academic research, of anthropology, etiquette, fashion, various types of medicine, hospitals, all came from this great city of cities. Medieval Islam was a religion of remarkable tolerance for its time, allowing Jews and Christians the right to practise their inherited beliefs, and setting an example which was not, unfortunately, copied for many centuries in the West.” Prince Charles, The Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, 1993.

A Faria 1. Sharia isn't compatible with Portuguese culture you can quote as many sources as you like it doesn't matter Answer- I never said it was compatible with your culture. But I guess those 1000 arabic words are compatible with your language, and those places with arabic etymology (i.e algrav etc) is compatible with your country. But I do appreciate/respect the quote you sent to me saying - Many of the Native Iberians converted to Islam and spoke Arabic during that period in history… You basically admitted to me that most of you guys/most of your ancestors used to be muslim. I'm really pleased to hear that. Obligato. (I learned that word from Portuguese people I know by the way)

+osman ghazi Northern Iberia were never Muslim. There are zero trace of Arabic or Islamic culture in Northern Iberia. The remaining Christian Visigoths that escaped and regrouped in Asturias quickly recaptured Northern Iberian territories from the moors. Over the centuries many Christian Iberian kingdoms in Northern Iberia (Leon, Portugal, Aragon, Galicia, Castile, Navarre...)emerged and eventually fought and expelled the moors from the rest of the peninsula. Modern day Iberians don't want anything to do with Islam.

ferzy09 The Suebi (The Suebic kingdom of Gallaecia) were absorbed by the Visigoths...so it's hard to say. Most Portuguese identify themselves as Lusitanians (Celt-Iberian) anyways, even though Northern Portugal was never part of Lusitania but Gallaecia (Celtic, Roman and then suebi and visigoth) instead. After the Visigothic defeat and the annexation of much of Hispania by the Moors, a group of Visigothic states survived in the northern mountains, including Gallaecia. Gallaecia became used to refer to the Christian part of the Iberian peninsula, whereas Hispania was used for the Muslim one.

The word Portugal derives from the Roman-Celtic place name Portus Cale. ... Around 200 BC, the Romans took the Iberian Peninsula from the Carthaginians during the Second Punic War, and in the process conquered Cale and renamed it Portus Cale (Port of Cale).

The Muslims did not occupy Portugal as some claim, because the word occupation is accompanied by devastation and destruction, and this did not happen. On the contrary, Muslims entered it, spreading knowledge and constructing beautiful buildings in it at a time when Europe lacked knowledge and constructed buildings. (this is the truth) 😔

+MrLiberali The name of the Portugal itself came from an Arabic name of orange????? it's ridiculous, The name of Portugal derives from the joined Romano-Celtic name Portus Cale. The region was settled by Pre-Celts and Celts, giving origin to peoples like the Gallaeci, Lusitanians, Celtici and Cynetes, visited by Phoenicians and Carthaginians, incorporated in the Roman Republic dominions as Lusitania and part of Gallaecia, after 45 BC until 298 AD, settled again by Suebi, Buri, and Visigoths, and conquered by Moors. Other influences include some 5th-century vestiges of Alan settlements, which were found in Alenquer (old Germanic Alankerk, from Alan+kerk; meaning church of the Alans), Coimbra and Lisbon.

And he should be, since the entire south have many many architectural and linguistic influences from the moors. raviept 95% of modern Portuguese derives from Latin. The other 5% from Celtic, Germanic and Arabic. Portugal does have some Moorish influences, of course, just like some Germanic and Celtic, but it's primarily a southern European Latin and Iberian culture. Let's not overestimate it's Moorish influence. And Portuguese people are ethnically Mediterranean, like the Spanish, Italians and Greeks. We don't see ourselves as "white" in the Germanic or Anglo-Saxon sense of the definition, but we descend primarily from southern European ethnicities
