"In an interview with NPR, the lead singer (John Gourley) explained that the message of the song as a whole was to simply say that it is better to have faith in yourself than in God. He would rather spend time trying to improve his life on Earth then spend time hoping that his life will magically be improved. This song, like many others by this band, fits the common theme of atheism or not having strict beliefs in a certain line of faith."

He hasn't taken the time to try and understand. God is not hope, he is faith. I hope he looks again. Oh, and he should let the woman who sings feel it still get out front. She makes the song.

@Barbara Lainhart In a fundamental sense, god is a idea. We come up with what he looks like, his doctrines, and how he will treat us in the great unknown. God is a figment of our mind and only we can change how we live our lives and how we fix our own situations. Hoping god will fix all your problems because you have faith is just ludicrous. God in my view, should be a moral compass, not anything more.

I am not an active Christian but I still abide by my faith -to some extent- and pray every night. What I dislike about the Christian religion is the avid worshipers who condemn you because of the scriptures THEY deem to be relevant while virtually ignoring the other portions of the Bible that says THOU SHALT NOT JUDGE etc. Hence I stopped going to church altogether; I think my relationship with God is my business and not the business of the plethora of modern Jesuses roaming about.

@113349780698191568679 are you being serious? No one needs a BA in History to know that Christianity is by far one of the most violent religions to have ever existed. south and central america and Mexico, not to mention the slave trade, because the bible teaches how slaves should be treated and sold and how to beat your slaves. All of that was done in the name of Christianity and driven by profit. Almost all the major countries of Africa were forced into Christianity, and many more countries. American natives were forced into Christianity, in fact it was illegal for native americans to even practice their own religion or even speak their own language.

It's about the apostasy and falling away from God in the last days. All these comments you find here are proof of that. You wouldn't understand that though if you are ignorant, or not a real believer in the scripture.
@samwilliams9211
@samwilliams9211 9 жыл бұрын
AJollyGoodFelon That's sort of like saying 'you said the word pizza so you must have meant Italy' Christo is right when he says apostasy, but the beauty of interpretation means it doesn't have to be about one thing and one thing only. And I'm not 'ignorant' because i don't believe in the scripture. I just have another way of thinking. Which is ok.

shawndy thomas no need for the insults and with ignorant and stupid people religion does cause anger and hate and modern religion is held back by the idiotic fanatical that think insults and threats can better their cause and even more so by the Muslims who never advanced with the rest of the world and fell back on religion to organize armies which was incorporated into their society to make them a militaristic people but even then Islam still does help many who recognize its peaceful potential and act peacefully. with all of that i will say that in the right hands and mind religion can help lead people to do greater things and be a better person as long as they are stable enough not to become fanatical and smart enough that they can contribute to the world. its simple creation has also saved thousand of lives throughout history, and even though it has taken many as well it still has the good potential that many people ignore, and many more people should act on.

@@Requestnetwork1 Under my point of view, this song criticizes the tendency of religious organizations of putting aside compassion between humans and only putting emphasis on blind faith and obidience to the rules, creating a sense of fear of God and his punishment instead of trust and love This has surely been a problem throughout all of history, and a couple of centuries ago it was way worse, but it's sad to see that such things remain even today (opinion of a catholic btw)
@Requestnetwork1
@Requestnetwork1 Жыл бұрын
@@davidepellegrino3999 That's a fair criticism and I find that trend especially prominent in the Catholic church, sorry if you've experienced that. But the main message of the song is to put aside faith in God and have faith in yourself which is completely unbiblical. I'd rather listen to a criticism from someone in the faith than people who are literally posting satanic content (look at the name of their albums and songs).

@@Requestnetwork1 now that I searched for more information about the song, I see you're right, its view is definitely anti religious, although I wouldn't go as far as calling it "satanic" Anyway, the thing I felt necessary responding you for is just that I don't find right to tell a Christian to be concerned about his faith just because he enjoys and doesn't find a wrong message in an anti religious song

@@davidepellegrino3999 Gotcha, the satanic thing is mainly referring to the band as a whole but that's another discussion. I'm going to disagree because there's a difference between enjoying a song and defending its bad message.

If I listened to the song when I was younger, i would have felt the same. But as I've gotten older and life gets harder, i need to put my faith in something stronger than me. I grew up in a strict religious environment and rebelled against that. One beautiful thing about growing up was realizing I could have a relationship with God on my own terms and I didn't have to agree with anyone about anything, like how i don't believe in eternal damnation. I don't believe hell is a place you go when you die. I believe hell is something humans create on earth. I can't speak for anyone else but praying, reading and believing in God has helped my mental wellbeing. I can't believe in just me because sometimes I need to tap into something stronger.

"In an interview with NPR, the lead singer (John Gourley) explained that the message of the song as a whole was to simply say that it is better to have faith in yourself than in God. He would rather spend time trying to improve his life on Earth then spend time hoping that his life will magically be improved. This song, like many others by this band, fits the common theme of atheism or not having strict beliefs in a certain line of faith." DEBATE OVER.

This song has one of my favorite messages, it is so profound and empowering. While not religious myself, I feel that this song is not so much a discredit to religion as it is a way of using a "modern Jesus" to represent reliance on the hope that things will get better. The meaning is to seize the now, not wait for a prosperous future that may very well never come to be. We strive for a future that is not coming towards us, instead we must be the ones to reach for and make it our own.
