Pose is a US Drama Series that premiered on FX in May 2018. It follows the up and coming House Mother Blanca Evangelista as she attempts to make a name for herself in the New York ballroom scene. The series is loosely based on the 1990 documentary Paris is Burning, that documents the lives of iconic Ballroom pioneers in the late 80’s.
1. Pray Tell, based on Junior Labeija
2. Blanca Evangelista, based on Avis Pendavis and Angie Xtravaganza
3. Angel Evangelista, based on Octavia St. Laurent, Tracey Africa Norman, and Carmen Xtravaganza
4. Ms Ford, based on Eileen Ford
5. Damon Evangelista, based on Willi Ninja
6. Elektra Abundance, based on Crystal LaBeija and Dorian Corey
7. Candy Abundance, later Ferocity, based on Venus Xtravaganza, plus colorism discussion
8. Lil Papi, based on the two kids from Paris is Burning
9. Quincy, based on the two kids from Paris is Burning
10. Chilli, based on the two kids from Paris is Burning
11. Frederica Norman, based on Leona Helmsley, plus discussion on ACT UP Activists, and giant condom house covering.
I also discuss how RuPaul was largely influenced by Ballroom Culture, and often pays tribute to ballroom/ drag queen icons on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
In this video is also discussion on violence faced by the trans community, in particular black trans women, and a brief discussion on cultural appropriation and colorism.
Pose FX is also available to stream on Netflix and BBC Iplayer in the UK
Thanks so much for watching!

It TOTALLY IS!!! From 1983 to 1985 I was in the hospital on average 3 times a week for about 6 months, to witness death from aids, to say goodbye to my loves, my heart! I STILL cry like now writing. 1987 was the loss of my 25 yr old sister to aids, which was the final cap and last death I personally dealt with. I see god and his/her SHINE inside each one of us! It’s a blessing! Love hard love always come from love at all times!!! Start with yourself🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🙏🏻

@@christinagraham2915 Exactly! The Reagan’s not only knew, but Nancy Reagan was very close friends with Rock Hudson, who was dying at the time they took office. It’s been said that when he asked her to address the “gay plague”, she stopped taking her calls. That’s cold. So they not only knew about it, but they were both from Hollywood, and both had worked around members of the LGBTQ community, and had made friends. When they got to Washington, I guess they forgot where they came from. The president didn’t even say the word AIDS until 83? 84, maybe? Just how many people might we have saved, or at least improved their quality of life. We lost an entire generation of LGBTQ persons. And they were the “Stonewall” generation, so we’ve lost some of the details of our history at that time in our history. My generation came along after them, and I am so glad I knew some of those wonderful people. They taught us a lot about how to survive in the world. I miss my friends that I knew. I am so so glad this show is paying tribute to the amazing people of that time. We will never know what they endured!

It's uch a dark history of the USA, to let us die of AIDS, like a no-value human being. Yet this country is full of churches at every corner! I cringe at thought that our people died all alone, subccumed by a virus. Ring a bell, any one?

I work in forensic medicine and it's beyond heartbreaking when I see on young homeless LGBT teens and victims of abuse on my table. On several occasions I had trans women who were clearly murdered and no one gave a damn....That infuriated me each time and each time I had to go through insane hoops just to get a glimmer of hope for justice for them. I'm very thankful for The Pose because as the adage goes it's a lot harder to dislike and hate someone whose story you know. We need more and more education, if it comes in the form of entertainment, so be it as long as an unaware person learns somethings and walks away with a bit more respect and understanding about other people and their battles.

I never saw Candy or Elektra as agressive or messy I saw them as flawed, tortured people that are willing to grow Elektra was always a joy to see on screen, even when she was playing her part as a disney villain. But she was never actively malicious. You could tell from ep.1 that Blanca & Elektra still care for each other Candy to me was very sympathetic, getting laughed at numerous times. She was hard-working, dedicated to her goals and smart. Also always willing to help out her family like with the cocoon. All in all I love these characters so much

Please watch Life After Paris is Burning. It details everything that happened up to the point of filming and this time is directed by a person of color who paid the talent a fair wage. Paris is Burning is a great primer to introduce people into the ball scene and a snapshot of being a trans person of color during the AIDS crisis, but the behind the scenes tomfoolery that went down will really put things into perspective. Like the documentarian being a cis straight white woman with an all-white crew. Among other things.

Angie Xtravaganza IS Blanca not Avis Pendhavis. Angel is a combination of Octavia St.Laurent but the sweetness & little-girl-lost manner & beauty was all Venus Xtravaganza. PERIOD. I was there. Knew half The Children in "Paris is Burning" & lived the life in the clubs with them in the mid 80s..It was EVERYTHING & "Pose" only captures bits of it. The reality can't be brought to the screen. It was a surreal world that existed in full view of everyone while at the same time being "Underground"in N.Y.C...R.I.P. to the original & now gentrified Pier in The Village where much of it all went down after dark with Music..Voguing..Drinking.Smoking.Cruising & Catfights between warring houses. Think : outdoor club for people who had no place to go at a time when the cops just let us be..Good times.

@@princessamani there were several moments throughout the series that were plot holes or poorly written. When Elektra was flipping tables in other people's houses for a few episodes only to tell I think it was Damon that he had to have respect. When Frederica said that her only regret was that another woman had her business destroyed she kept flip flopping between good and evil. I think it was to make them seem more kindhearted and less one dimensional but it was really messy and confusing.

Great video! I'm a cis woman but I've been so enamored with ballroom culture ever since I saw Paris is Burning in my early 20s. Like a lot of people I had reservations about Pose when I first heard about it, but it's such an amazing show and I'm so glad they've been able to introduce that culture and history to a whole new generation of people ❤️ This video was really informative and I can tell you really did your research, I learned a few new things from this so thank you! Venus Extravaganza was so much fun to be with. As small as she was she was a big riot to hang with. We had so many laughs together. I was heartbroken when I was told of her murder and how her little body was discovered. The whole House of Extravaganza was so saddened by her death. Her boyfriend at the time Rican, took it really bad. I ran into him shortly after her death happened one morning on my way to work. I believe it was January 1989, I could be wrong but I was happy to see him even though I can tell he was taking her passing very hard. We spoke for a couple of minutes I gave him a hug and some money and told him to stay strong. I ran into rican a few times during the years and he is doing much better thank god. So many have passed away from that era sad to say. They would be so happy to know they have not been forgotten and there names and faces are known world wide due to Paris is Burning and how the Ballroom scene has evolved world wide also. I miss them dearly and learned a lot from them. RIP. EXTRAVAGANZA Power forever!!!🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉

It's really heartbreaking to see how many of our icons passed away from a battle with AIDS. It's also sad to see how no one has ever been charged with that murder, 150% because the police didn't care to find out. But on a brighter note, it's also very liberating to see where ballroom started to where it is now. By POC, for POC....we are a force to be reckoned with. And I also need to add that I wuz here for Crystal's friend in the background "don't you tell her she's showing her colors!!!" Lmaooo

Thank you for making this video!! Its a shame that so many people don't know this rich history. I tear up every time I hear Venus Extravaganza's story. You're SO correct that this needs to be taught to LGBT+ people, especially, so they know where the history of all of this comes from. I hear so many non-Black young people saying "realness" & "shade" & its sad to think they prob think its from Rupaul's Drag Race. Even the words "the drag race" came from these times. Great job on this very important topic!👏🏻

Very interesting video! The first time I watched Pose was after it made the transition to Netflix. I immediately became a fan of the show and watched every episode available. I fell in love with so many of the characters, but especially Blanca. It is really cool to see who these characters were based on in the early ball scene. Though I am a straight cis woman, I participated in a similar ball culture in the early mid 80s with many of my wonderful drag friends who are no longer with us. Every time you mentioned a member of early ball culture dying of AIDS, it took me back to the deaths of my three closest friends in 1989, 1991 and 1993. Best of luck with your transition! 💓
