Part of the piece count different is the fact that the old one used 5 pieces per square (320 pieces total just for the squares) and this new one just uses a single 4x4 tile (64 pieces total). So that right there drops the piece count by 256 piece while still retaining basically the same amount of plastic.

I love how since the Chess Pieces are brick built you can do those crazy rules like making your pawns into a tank of a unit

The only way they could have made this better, is if the set could fold in half and then the pieces could be stored inside for easy portability.

It looks so good, I just wish there was a better price, because the other chess set is cheaper, but with more pieces.

This certainly looks nice, but I liked the last one because you could store the pieces inside the board and it was a better parts pack in my opinion.

I’m with you on the wooden board game aesthetic. I absolutely love this thing. And the price per piece comparison with the last one doesn’t really matter too much to me. A lot of the part count from that last one was uselessly building up the underside of the board. Outside of that Harry Potter one, this may be my favorite Lego chess set, and I’m probably gonna end up with it at some point

I love love love, Lego Chess sets, I saw a MOC of the Empire Strikes Back and fell in love. I’m excited to see what other different chess sets we make with these.

This looks so good

While I still have the original chessboard on display on a Living room shelf, this newer one displays nicer, and looks a lot more easier to actually play. While I liked the concept, and build of the original, as it was quite unique and different for it's time it hasn't done much more than collect dust as it's not a good functional board, as the chess pieces are too elaborate, and the spacing with the jumpers is obnoxiously tight and difficult to maneuver during an actual game. Love the simplicity and look for this one though it's $99 here Canada opposed to the original being around about $70 so slightly more though it looks like it uses much larger pieces for the squares, and no jumper plates from what I can see.

It took them this long to make a proper chess set. All the variations they put out before look so weird and you couldn't make out with piece is wich. Now it may be possible to play chess with lego for once.

I love it. I'm going to get it eventually. Those pieces look wayy better then the other set. Much more realistic. Awesome.job LEGO.

Piece count doesnt matter if the set is much better and kinda the same price since the old one seems like it was really blocky and wasted all of the pieces on the blocky board and really oversized board
