I own several but find the Friendly Elec R6C the absolute best performance for cost. It has an optional anodized aluminum case that acts as a huge heat sink. It's powerful (Same RK3588 as Orange Pi 5 Plus), inexpensive, great looking in the case and totally silent. It's sold as a router however, it's an amazing SBC for retro emulation on Linux or Android.

Pi 4 (4GB), Pi 3 B, Pi Zero, Pi Zero 2W. May perhaps consider an x86-64 one in future though.

The “SBC” I’d like to see someone demo is that Piconium from Embedded Now. It just looks next level. If it performs as well, it’ll be something to have. Thanks for all your videos. Your tutorials and insights have proven to be invaluable. The product plugs are ok. I’m sure they’re a necessary evil so I’ll leave it alone. Thanks again

Already owning a RPi 3 + 400 and after very hard deliberations over buying a faster and better featured Orange Pi 5/Plus or a Raspberry Pi 5, I went for the Raspberry Pi 5 because it offered greater flexibility through available community support, software and add-ons. Clearly the Orange Pi scene is improving but still lags far behind for now. To be honest it was the same when it came to focusing on PC or Apple as my main platform to invest in. I now have 5 x64 PCs and 3 Apples (x86/M2) in the house but still find for all it's imperfections, the PC platform to be the better platform for many reasons, just like the Raspberry Pi. The fastest and better hardware-featured device is not always the best when it comes to using it. :)

Nice bit of kit that Brian! I wouldn't mind the 16GB Ram model but other life needs are are more important at the minute. BTW Will you be doing any videos on the new 23H2 Windows 11 options/features coming soon! It has some interesting features, I'm sure you know 👍

This will sound lame but every computer in my house be it laptop or mini pc, they’re all SBC’s. I do have a raspberry pi 4, an orange pi 4 and honestly the the Microprocessor eval board I got from ST micro (ST32mp157dk) blows them all out of the water. Plus, they only $45, you can plug shields made for arruino, pi, or pmod and it comes with a touch screen

Thanks Brian. Very interesting development. The question remains open: can the Orange Pi 5 Plus boot from USB 3 and from eMMC or only from micro SD. The power consumption would also be of interest.

@@Britec09 I own a Raspberry PI 4 8GB and operate it with a USB 3 hub with a power supply and 7 separately switchable USB ports and 7 SSD hard drives are also attached to it. I separated the USB power cable from PRI 4 to the hub to protect the board from reverse current (you can also install a Schottky diode). So USB booting is a fundamental question for me.

My research indicates it is possible and not any harder then you find with a Raspberry Pi 4+.

I like the Orange Pi board, but it doesn't seem to have the power I like, I do favor the Windows platform, I took your advice and put together a Windows 11-approved computer from the ground up cost me a little under 180 dollars, now I am looking for reasonably priced computer case hard to find! I want one that doesn't look like a mini refrigerator and then my bulld will be complete. thanks for all the help.

The best SBC in my head today will have x86 8 core cpu, 2 x DDR5 slots, 2 x M.2 NVME capable slots, 6 x SATA ports, 2 x Intel SFP+ cages, 2 x Intel 2.5 gig ports, one side PCIE x16 slot and will use wide power input (9-60VDC)...

There are plenty of miniPCs out there and some people are making them small and calling them SBCs but I don't feel like it's really an SBC if it has no GPIO...

For me, such devices live and die on the community support, range of affortable software and range of affordable hardware and the future of the platform. As it would hopefully be used for real, the hardware considerations while important become secondary.
