The economy is in ruins, the currency is all but worthless, shops are empty and people queue for subsidised food rations to survive. Hugo Chavez launched a socialist revolution in 1998, but under his successor, Nicolas Maduro, the oil-rich country has become a failing state. A week in the capital Caracas revealed a city on the edge of destruction. The first things you see are the queues. They start at about 3:00am across the city, with tens of thousands waiting in line to buy subsidised food. "They are fine in the government, they eat", one woman clutching a baby says in disgust.
As the reporters move on they pass people scavenging through garbage for food and billboards boasting how much more people are eating since the revolution. The only business that's booming in the barrios is crime. With close to 4,000 murders a year, Caracas is getting a reputation as the most dangerous city in Latin America. Open elections are a thing of the past. Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado says, "even though today over 80 per cent of the population is desperate for a profound change, they have realised that they no longer can have even uncompetitive elections".

Hi I´m from Spain in the 70`s and early 80`s a neighbour lived and worked in Venezuela for a Spanish Construction Company (Dragados y Construcciones), he told us that Venezuela used to be a prosperous country at that time, it´s hard and sad to realize the poverty and misery people from Venezuela are going through, it´s very sad my friend

John Walker Chavez’s bad policies are the reason why the country failed, socialist policies to be exact. He failed to diversify the economy and depended on oil, he acted as if oil prices would stay high forever, that’s simply not the case. Not to mention, he overspent and did not save a penny. All the income from the PDVSA went straight to government expenditures, barely any went back to PDVSA upkeep and surely none went into savings for the future or even investments. This killed all chance of the government having backup money in the future for when an economic crash happens, which led to them overprinting their currency. Chavez destroyed the free market in Venezuela and went on a nationalization streak. He basically had an official or de-facto government monopoly in nearly every industry, which he made possible through outright nationalization, and threatening companies with nationalization / pressuring them into working with the government. The tax code was fucked too, which led to Venezuela becoming one of the WORST places in the world to do business (look it up, Venezuela is near rock bottom in business freedom and investment). The worst of all is that Chavez expropriated tons of land and gave it to peasants who don’t know what they’re doing when it comes to farming on a mass scale. Chavez setup the crisis that is happening in Venezuela right now. That is 100% undeniable. The only reason why he wasn’t thrown out in the early 2000’s was due to high oil prices allowing him to fulfil his left-wing populist agenda.

It's not that the presidents were socialist, even though socialism and communism constantly result in poverty (without exception.) It's that they were "populist." Why the subtle propaganda? elmers balm The sanctions aren’t affecting electricity you Mong. That’s impossible. The hospitals don’t have basic supplies because the Venezuelan government is BROKE. They have defunded programs and they printed their currency into a hyper inflationary state. They also refused medical aid from foreign organizations. Don’t use sanctions as an excuse, you know it’s bullshit Edit: He was elected with a “clear majority” in an election with severely depressed turnout. The turnout of the 2018 election was below 25%. Most of his opposition were either banned from Running, fled the country due to government pressure or were jailed. He also uses the constituent assembly (a sham legislature) to push through laws. He threw out the National Assembly after the opposition nearly had a super majority. Maduro is anti-democratic in all sense of the word.

A country doesn't go bust by putting in some sports equipment or installing concrete steps in place of dust tracks. It was the nationalisation of industry and removal of foreign owned companies that left them wholly dependent on oil. Who would set up a business here that would employ people?

Socialism will always fail because it relies too heavily on foreign aid and natural resources, which we all know don't last forever. Socialism is opposed to innovation, because innovation would mean liberalizing and opening up the economy, i.e. capitalism or free market economics. I'm not saying capitalism is the greatest system of all time, but the thing about capitalism and western democracy is that you can continue to change the system to be better and more inclusive, while at the same time maintaining a free and open economy and sustainable living standards. Radical or extreme ideologies such as Socialism, Fascism, and Islamic fundamentalism are about resisting change, which is why they always fail in the end. I hope Venezuela will soon have a new government that cares more about the people than they do about power.

I didn't hear much mentioned about US sanctions imposed to cripple this countries economy or the $billions owed by the US but frozen or the $billions of gold held by the US and UK they refuse to return, or the restrictions of this country to trade with others for food or drugs for its people or those countries will also suffer sanctions. Or the US restrictions preventing them from using their greatest asset in oil

For one, Sanders doesn't want to turn the US exactly into Venezuela. He wants to improve social programs that have been deteriorating in the past decades, because you just can't have a purely capitalist society just like you can't have a purely socialist one. In an ideal society, corporations would flourish while at the same time its citizens would enjoy fair benefits and better safety net. And two, "Chavez destroyed the market economy, leaving the country entirely dependent on oil." The country was run to the ground by incompetent officials who only relied on a volatile resource to fund a purely socialist government. But of course, "Venezuela is feeling the Bern" is all an idiot can muster up.

It now has revoked elections, consolidation of political branches and emprisonnement of opposition political parties over bogus claims. Is this true leadership of a socialist government ? Does a socialist ideology even accept an alternance of party ? No it doesn't. The difference with a free market democracy is that, under a socialist system, when a government screws up, it doesn't get replaced. I GUARANTEE before the debauched currency, the wealthy were tipped off to exchange currency and stay at a hotel in Rio till the U.S. army "brings democracy " to Venezuela, just like in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, and soon to be Iran/Venezuela.And when sanctions are lifted when the population is on its knees,they can go back to plain poverty instead of extreme poverty.But they can kiss the social assistance programs(education medical,free food,infrastructure ect) goodbye and go to IMF osterity programs

Venezuela is not failing because populism is bad. Populist Chavism was praised by the Left for over a decade. If you will note, Venezuela is a failed state because the largest oil reserves in the world are controlled by a bus driver who happens to be a nincompoop with a massive police force. All of this "comparison" to Trumpism in the United States is intellectually lazy. The reason populism has always been denounced throughout history is because populism is anti-establishment and the people who analyze politics for a living (college professors mostly) stick to the script.

Everyone blames Socialism in Venezuela but I don't believe socialism alone is the cause of its woes. Norway has a strong government intervention and lots of oil but has not ended up like Venezuela and has one of the highest living standards in the world. Rather the structure of the Venezuelan economy was an extractive economy where everything is dependent on the price of oil. Its just for them to have a sustainable economy, the price of the oil would have to be $250 a barrel. If you are going to blame Socialism on anything, it would be that the government was responsible for failing to diverse the economy. Note there are capitalist economies (Saudi Arabia, Russia, Nigeria) that may go the exact same way as Venezuela because of their high oil dependency.

Maduro failed, but the opposition is made up of people who want to enforce the old pro-capitalist politics of the pre-Chavez era. The reason Venezuela is now a failed state has nothing to do with socialism. Because socialism was never build. No matter what Chavez or Maduro said, their nation was and remains capitalistic. The power of the (bureaucratic) state has increased and many social projects ended absolute poverty. But the essence of Venezuela was still capitalism with a lot of government regulation. That has now failed as the oil prices dropped and the government ran out of money. President Maduro is running out of time and therefore he becomes authoritarian and fearful. Because the icon Hugo Chavez is death and he has not idea how to move beyond the capitalist system.

Can't believe people can't read between the lines and see the lies. Why would you cut production of oil if it is your main income? If the oil prices lower, you increase production and sell more. I want to buy oil and if someone wants to sell for less, I would buy more. I can store oil because it is not going to rot away. All stock markets are privately owned and work together. All world electronic financial transactions are done on a single system. Who created and runs the system? All the transactions transfer and are done in US funds. Private individuals create an entry on a ledger and make money out of thin air and give it to GOVERNMENTS for interest. A giant ponzi scheme.

This is exactly how Russia looked like in 90s after the overnight transition from communism to capitalism. Nobody blamed capitalism for that, but everybody blame socialism for the venezuelan crisis. It's NOT capitalism or socialism to blame. It's sudden economic transition, corruption and inefficiency to blame.

The problem here in SA = South America, the politics aways become populist, liberal (because the new generation are such ppl) and socialism/dictatorship (when they are in power). They come like ''i'm our savior, will help the country to grown economic blah blah blah''. They come with populism, with so many social programs (who dont help annything, just put a wall in ur brain and vision to help ppl, and the no-brains start call him good) All the SA countrys are doomed, the only few who resist are Brazil, Chile and Uruguai. Chile stated chaos in the street in the last year for the such politics. Argentina become a ''such place'' ruled by Kirchner and she back again with Fernandez, bcs the new generation mind are full populist and liberal. Brazil ruled 15 or more years with only one big party (PT) and grown in nothing, just in liberalism. Since 2005, Brasil ppl only guns and in a such big country the guns dead per year was such about 5k per year, now, look nowadays... 70k die per year. The rules in Brazil just help criminals. The government made nothing to change it, bcs 90% are corrupt ones, who dont make power laws bcs they can get trapped by one... Populism and Liberalism are good, but like medicine, the amount you get will determine if it will be good or not.

This will serve a lesson to other countries who have large deposits of oil wealth not to depend only on oil revenue they need to find other alternatives to supplement their economy because the price of oil doesn t stay always the same and one day it will run out or a new cheap energy will be invented.

"Nappies" these guys are spoiled! I was born in the 80's and my mother used cloth nappies for me. She bleached them and dried them in the sun. I'm sure they have plenty of bleach and sun there. They should rearrange their priorities. Did you see the sweet gear they are walking around in? Though I wish them all the best.

I live in Venezuela and I am doing just fine. I have never stood in line for food or other products. I have everything and more than I need. I still prefer this Venezuela to the old Venezuela any day. I have been here for 32 years. I live on the Island of Margarita 50 metres from Playa El Agua. I shop at Sigo Supermarket in Pampatar and I shop just as I would as Sainsburys, ASDA or Tesco. More than 90 per cent of businesses are PRIVATELY owned in Venezuela which makes Venezuela a capitalist country with socialist programs. Simple.

I am responding to the title only. Venezuela has made some poor choices and I would not defend Maduro. However, would it be possible for Venezuela to be in a better position had they not had sanctions depriving them of much need money owed them? Of course the United States are a bunch of angels in this. Trump went to the UN and proudly claimed we believe in others sovereignty. What a joke. We have undermined and overthrown countries throughout the world. In 2014 a Gallop poll asked a simple question: "Who is the greatest threat to world peace?" Overwhelmingly the United States is thought by people around the world to threaten peace. Take the sanctions away form Venezuela and return to considerable amount of money we have blocked and then see how they do. And for the starving in the streets just maybe we can take some credit too.

This documentary is loaded, this didn’t happen because of socialism it happened because the economy was based on oil exports and the price of oil fell.

Everybody talks about a solution but no one talks about a very simple solution. If people are starving then why are women still having children. On this documentary the narrator talks to many women with little children or babies. Are people stupid or can't they realize if there is not enough food to go around then why make things worse by adding another mouth to feed
