The last days of 1980 saw Peter Grant dealing with lots of backstabbing. People looking to get a piece of the band as well as pushing for a reformation with another drummer. 1981 saw Jimmy Page being the first Zeppelin member to work on new music, both prog rock and and a soundtrack project. I never knew about the Death Wish Jimmy Page soundtrack. My god this series is going deep, it's already feeling like it's too good for KZfaq which is a joke now. Netflix needs a series like this.

I remember the news when this soundtrack came out. I was really excited back then, but like most post Zeppelin efforts, it left me a bit diasspointed back then because I was expecting more Led Zep style content which obviously wasn't ever going to be the case. It solidifies the old saying that the band was better than the sum of it's parts.

I think the soundtrack is quite good. I play it at least once a year. Not so much for the Jones album though...it's okay for a few songs. Just my opinion.

I can tell you from experience and memory that as a new Zep fanatic in the late 80's (13-14 years old) I was over the moon about any mention of Zep or the individual members in magazines, on the radio and MTV. There was a serious Zep buzz in the air back in the late 80's. Their solo careers had become well known at this point along with the numerous hair bands that tried to mimick the Zep sound. This, I believe made it possible for the Page/Plant reunion to be such a success. MTV did a lot of Zep related things around 1988-1990. There were Zep weekends, full of videos and news, plus multiple showings of The Song Remains the Same. Watching that gave me goosebumps. I was glued to the TV on those special "Zep" weekends. The Boxed set was released in 1990 which contributed to the continuous Zeppelin buzz in the air. It was a great period for any Zeppelin fan.

Thank you for sharing your recollections at the time, funny enough, that's how 2001-2003 felt for me when i discovered the band. I stayed up late to record HOW THE WEST WAS WON from a radio broadcast on cassette. I didn't have the money to buy the 3cd set as i was in high school, it took me some years and my first day job to get it. The 80s had an interesting revival of Zepp you are right, and i feel many Hair Metal and Glam acts, are like, and i say this with respect....lost children of Zeppelin.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories yes it was an exciting time. (It sounds like you had a similar experience, just years later) Also, this was before the internet so the only way you knew about your bands was through magazines and of course the radio, their albums and occasionally MTV would do a Zep weekend. And those were AWESOME! There were 2 music clubs that would send info in the mail where you could buy 10 or 20 CD's for a few dollars. BMG and Columbia House. This is how I got most of my music on cassette tape. I can't tell you how many hours I spent listening to Zep and other bands over and over and over. Then, people were selling Zep bootlegs on cassette and I used to save up all of my money to buy them, one at a time over the next few years. Now, with youtube you can find these same bootlegs for free. But back then it took work, time and money. We invested so much of our time into our music which is why I hold Zep and a few other bands so close to my heart. Discovering and following Zep back then and through their solo careers was like a Caveman discovering Fire! My first concert was Jimmy Page on his 1988 Outrider tour. I was 1 month from turning 15. Amazing times. I am Still a Zep fanatic to this day. Please subscribe to my (new) music discussion channel as well. Keep Rockin' 🤘

That boxed set you mention was the first thing I ever owned by Led Zeppelin. The version I had was 4 cd's and came with a really nice booklet. Love the cover with the crop circles and the shadow of the Zeppelin blimp. I saw Page & Plant in 1998 on the tour for Walking Into Clarksdale. Awesome show. I was born in 1981 so I never got the chance to see Led Zeppelin unfortunately. Maybe I'll stumble upon a time machine someday 😉

Your productions are simply lavishly done and full of knowledge delicately teased from the past. Led Zeppelin's influence will resonate ad infinitum. One story for you, as a Rush guy it was heart warming to hear Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee's commentary on meeting Page and Plant, they were young fans again. One of the main bands for them to witness along with Yes. Merci for la musique! 🎶

Jimmy to this day is missed his contributions to music after Zep are there but not as the Les Paul weilding axeman genius as we knew . Coverdale/Page album is my favorite out of all post Zep stuff . xyz would of been great I think it's a shame Plant didn't give it a shot . Plant obviously was in a fit with Coverdale/Page then we get the Page/plant stuff which I am grateful for seen it live three times . Then saw crowes and page what a show . Plant sabatoged so much from 81 to now we could have got so much MORE Zep . ✌🏼 Awesome as always brother 🤘🏼

The thing is Page has never really understood how Plant works, psychologically, the way to get Robert in, is to apply reverse psychology. In the 80s he was just like a child...and well, i feel bad for Coverdale actually, the man was ALL IN with the project, Jimmy had an ally there and chose to go with Robert again, the same Robert who dissed Led Zeppelin as the past but made money out of it in the 90s. Their toxic relationship is beyond complicated! Thank you very much for tuning in! Episode 12 coming up next week!

Man! So so GOOD!! Thank you for creating these vids for our enjoyment and edification. Now and for all time. I love that you chose some of the more obscure, "back-water" areas of their history. That said though, please oh please keep going with these and hopefully we'll end up with a comprehensive Zep video-biography. PS- Also, maybe you're familiar with Terry Keating who does the Bonzoleum channel. He's commented (and I agree) that a sort of comprehensive, in-depth studio notes style vid of each of their albums, song by song, including all instruments played, recording techniques employed, players, writers, locations etc etc. would be really, REALLY cool. Admittedly those sort of vids might only appeal to the real die-hards, but then again you're making in-depth ITTOD analysis vids so it's probably right up your alley! Thanks again and GREAT WORK!!👍👍👍👍🫡🙏

JCM what a uncertain time. As fan we were all hungry for some from the Led Zeppelin hangar. So when Deathwish II came out this 15 yr old just ate it up then Plant's solo. I understood why they could not continue as they were but we all still had hope. Scream for Help was only released on CD in Japan as far as I know the LPs are pretty easy to find. If I come across a CD I will contact you. You played some tracks I never heard from the XYZ sessions. Plus I never heard the quote of Grant saying "but that means Yes comes before Zeppelin" ...haha loved that Grant still looking out for his boys. Much respect for all the time and effort you put into this. cheers -VK

Researching this decade has been exciting and depressing at the same time, after this i wanna listen to live 1970 zeppelin trust me hahaha. Interesting fact...i think i spotted how Plant's Lead Singer Syndrome got to him in 1985 and started to manipulate people into wanting to be a golden god again....the XYZ sessions received a special audio remix from my end to make them sound better or give them a LIVE feel to them, this project is time consuming i can tell you, thank you SO MUCH for supporting me, i mean it!

Love this opening! It's as if an announcer might do a voiceover saying, "Led Zeppelin on the next 'Miami Vice..."🙃 You have a flair not only for playing lead guitar, but for this amazing educational, historical, and rockin' Led Zeppelin documentary series. We who like to watch it ✋ are fortunate to observe this through your eyes. The timeline and the way you deliver it reminds me of why I fell in love with rock music from a toddler to now. My old man for almost 10 years now has played guitar since 10 years old, first band at 13, and from 87-92 played lead for a metal band in the mean streets of St. Louis, MO. We enjoyed watching you play live on your channel here. I just signed in at 2am Pacific time to watch both episodes of Post Zeppelin. This is not some Hollywood version of their history. This is how it should be done. If I sound over the top, so be it. I'm an average rock history enthusiast who studied my uncle's albums almost daily. I call him my musical big brother and I sometimes brag about listening to "Parachute" by The Pretty Things for the first time at 6 years old and I'm American, know what I mean? What 6 year old from Riverside, CA would know who they were but that's a whole other story. I remember reading about The Pretties signing with Swan Song and my uncle actually saw Led Zep in '69 maybe '68 and '70 too. My childhood rocked dude lol. Cheers!

When you said that "post-Zeppelin music was like a birthday gift you didn't exactly want, but you had to be thankful for it anyway", it gave me goosebumps because that's exactly as I felt back in the day. Nothing created by Page or Plant has any resemblance to what we might have been expecting. Unfortunately Jones was not even on the radar, and maybe because pre-internet days, you would not have even known. What this means is the reinforcement that the band itsef was greater than the sum of its parts, and this saying is used a lot to describe situations, but in this case makes it blindly obvious. Greta work., Your videos on the history of Zeppelin is just amazing.

I do really love Robert Plant's 'The Big Log'. The song and the video are great-the album 'The Principle of Moments' is pretty good overall. Jimmy Page's 'Outrider' album and of course 'The Firm' are solid. I think the 80's were hard for many established artists as it was so easy to make a corporate friendly album and cash in. David Bowie even did this.

I wish XYZ (Jimmy Page plus Chris Squire and Alan White) had found a way to become a fourpiece. Robert Plant was invited but turned it down but I wish they'd maybe considered Paul Rogers who later wound up in The Firm with Page. The Firm cut an XYZ track on their second album, Fortune Hunter and it wasn't bad but I think a version with Page, Squire, White and Rogers would have been better. The Rhino CD reissue of Yes' Drama has a track Satellite cut when Yes was down to a trio of Howe, Squire and White that's an early instrumental version of XYZ's Telephone Secrets. It's interesting to contrast the way Howe and Page interpret the guitar parts. I played the Yes' Satellite and the XYZ tapes to a friend of mine who's a big Zep fan. He said he really liked XYZ's Mind Drive but said he preferred the way Howe played Satellite/ Telephone Secrets.

As a Zeppelin fan I gravitated to these recording after the break up. I think the best thing to come out post Zeppelin was CODA. Not that Jimmy and Robert didn't have great works. I actually think Plant's best post Zepp project was Pictures at Eleven and if this was just a bit heavier it could have been a master piece. JPJ was the bass and keyboard player for Zepp but so much more. For me his post Zepp works were so so at the time. As I go back and revisit his works I see the genuis of JPJ. Jimmy's works although not bombastic it was still Jimmy Page. I felt Jimmy post Zepp was a lost sole not knowing where he fit in! Jimmy in Zepplin was the fire, the extreme! He made Zeppelin heavy although JPJ and Bonzo delivered the heavy Jimmy was the fire that raged above it. When I speak of the genius of JPJ it is mostly underrated and underrecockinzed in Zepp. The genius of Jimmy Page was the use of the genius of JPJ in the orchestration of many of Zeppelin's works. Post Zeppelin that was gone as was the power of Bonzo and Plant. The magic that were these musicians was the unit that was Led Zeppelin. Your productions are honorable to the legacy with the utmost care and dedication. I thought the ITTOD series was phenomenal and with your insight it brings a new way to see and hear the greatest works of music in modern time! In the absence of Zeppelin I strolled the streets of music since but there's only one street I feel at home and that's Zeppelin Blvd. Thank you for giving your perspective and many just another reason for the love of this great band!

First, thank you for this series young man. I think you discovered Zeppelin in the early 2000's, correct? At any rate, I was a huge Zeppelin fan, not saying I dislike them now, not at all, just don't listen as much to really any music, now that I'm a lot older, will be 56 years old soon. So, I'm listening, or just finished the first episode of "In Through The Out Door".. However, I listened to this first, before that.. Going to tie in some comments about this time period, late 70's through the 80's, and combine a few things, from my perspective. First, allow me to be "Captain Obvious", haha.. Zeppelin was and is highly influential, massively popular, etc.. In my opinion, the premiere rock & roll band of their time, and on the Mount Rushmore of Rock bands, with The Beatles and Stones, and the fourth band would be up for debate, and I exclude ELVIS, whom I'm a huge fan of, because he's in his own category, as I view it. Anyway, that late 70's through 80's time period, for me having turned 18 in 1985, I became a Zeppelin fan in the late 70's, like middle school. The way I remember it, "In Through The Out Door", was well received by our older brothers, cousins and neighborhood kids, the ones in high school already, and my age group just behind them came along for the ride, since my age group also liked Kiss, Aerosmith, Van Halen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, etc.. When we heard Zeppelin in more detail, it was the grandeur and epic sound that got us.. We also got our hands on a bunch of bootlegs of their earlier concerts, due to cassette tapes becoming popular, so we got to hear concert recordings from the early days, since that's the ONE band, we all wanted to see but missed out on.. I'll be honest, a lot of this information, I already knew, BUT, you have rekindled my interest. I will tell you Zeppelin was so influential, that when Bonzo said he really liked The Police, that my friends and I started listening to them, and liked them as well, because they had the "Zeppelin seal of approval".. My favorite Robert Plant album, Pictures At Eleven, because that sounded the most like Zeppelin.. XYZ would have been fantastic, as I liked it, had heard those recordings many years ago.. My age group always held out hope Zeppelin would return but except for a few reunions, alas it wasn't meant to be.. I know for a fact, because it was reported at that time in the music press, that when Zeppelin took the stage at Live Aid in 1985 in Philadelphia, PA, that all the major rock/pop stars, like Madonna, etc.. that were there looked on just to see the Mighty Zep that day, even though they wound up sounding awful, but those things happen.. I remember the 1988 reunion, and a good number of my frat brothers and I watched that at the frat house, because we had heard they were playing with Jason that night.. For me, I really liked The Firm.. Zeppelin meets Bad Company, good stuff, as I view it, especially with the 1980's being so lacking musically, very pop driven, etc.. It would have been awesome to have seen Led Zeppelin in the 1980's for my age group, it really is awful what happened to Bonzo, and especially awful for his family, his son, etc.. I will put my thoughts about Zeppelin like this, think about it, at Knebworth, Page is high on smack, Bonzo is having his issues, Plant has gone through the loss of his son two years prior, etc.. They are not on top of their game for Knebworth, BUT, Zeppelin is so talented that at their worst, they sound better than any band at that time or any time after that, including the present could sound under the same circumstances, because Zeppelin were just that great.. Zeppelin at their worst, is better than any band at their best, as I view it. My apologies for the long post.
