The Tiny Desk has hosted plenty of major pop, rock and hip-hop stars in its 15-plus years, but you'd be hard-pressed to find one more agreeable or self-effacing than Austin Richard Post. Whether lamenting the state of his singing voice, joking about his nerves or sitting slack-jawed in awe of the fantastic band his people had assembled for this show, Post had the bearing of a lottery winner who wouldn't even give himself credit for buying a ticket.
Before, during and after the show, Post Malone was a joy to have around. But he also just happened to bring a few of the biggest pop hits of the 21st century: Set-opener "Sunflower," for example, has been certified eighteen-times platinum by the RIAA since its release in 2018 - that's an all-time record - while the 2017 single "I Fall Apart" and 2019's "Circles" lag behind at a mere ten-times platinum apiece. "Enough Is Enough," which closes this set, enjoys no such designation, but give it time: A track from Post Malone's new album Austin, it's only been out for a few weeks.
So enjoy this set for what it is: one of the world's biggest stars, performing a few of the world's biggest songs, each set to a luminous arrangement. Post Malone himself seems surprised by how great this Tiny Desk concert sounds, and that's not just the humility talking.

What I love about Post Malone is in many ways he’s us. He’s had his struggles, his issues, his triumphs. And at the end of the day he knows what has been, but doesn’t forget what is and will be. Watching his growth gives us all a path. And his humble nature lets the true talent show. That’s all of us if you choose it. I play autoharp. Would you consider my instrument. I play Salvation Army songs - my great aunt played this autoharp in a Salvation Army band in Vancouver, Canada. When my family came here in 1902, my great grandfather hired a retired boxer to protect his wife going downtown and playing with the Salvation Army band; their daughter, Eva, took over autoharp duties in the band. They lived in a house with a spire in Fairview Slopes in Vancouver. My mother's mother died giving birth in that house. Eva always regretted now calling for an ambulance when her sister - called Kitty - began to hemorrhage. That's how my grandmother died but my mother lived.

one of the reasons I love Tiny Desk concerts is because I can hear songs at their basic level. Don't get me wrong; I love a good production but it doesn't matter if the song underneath isn't good to begin with. And sometimes it's just a pleasant surprise to find a favorite song still sounds wonderful (or better!) stripped down to it's essence. Malone's songs are wonderful either produced OR stripped down but these stripped down versions really highlight the lyrics and the emotions. Yet another pleasant surprise. Wonderful job, Mr Post.

@@MartinoFeliznot all of them do this though man. Some look so stressed or exhausted. They look genuinely happy in there on this session!

I picked up on that as well. They seem to enjoy playing music with Post.

I love how he brings all these people together for music! The world needs more of this. There's no race, no politics, no differences. Just people and great songs

There is something just magic about NPR. Like a big class project and everyone did the homework and the whole team knocks it out of the park every time. Would love to hear all the artists say what NPR means to them.
