So the correct responses are: a) I didn’t think of it that way at the time. b) In hindsight I can see that now. c) I don’t recall that. d) I think it was someone else. e) That wasn’t my remit/responsibility/function. f) I was doing/acting/saying what someone else told me to. Selection of any of the above comments will save a lot of time in the witness box.

"I have no idea" is a ridiculous answer. If he genuinely didn't know he should say how appalled he is that his staff kept this hidden from him and made a heartfelt apology as, as their boss, he should damn well have known and done something about it at the time. The alternative is that he DID know and is lying, which seems more likely.

There is an air of menace around him. I'm sure any prospective whistle blower would be thrilled to walk into his "always open door". He's taken responsibility for nothing - the buck doesn't stop with him!
