Dealing with post travel depression can be a difficult experience. As an avid traveler who has experience sadness, confusion, depression an loneliness after returning home from a trip, I understand what you're going through, and so do many others. Back in 2013, I posted my first video on post travel depression and since then have received hundreds of emails from travelers going through it. So, in this video, I wanted to share the commonalities we all face when going through it based on what I've heard from you all (and my own personal experience), the process of going through it, the tools I used to get through it, and much more.

You had a similar post travel anxiety disorder before you were married to your husband. It looks like you have been having serious mental problems, for which you should consult with a psychologist or a psychiatrist to give you some medicine.

I really resonate with this. I went to South Africa for 7 weeks volunteering for wildlife conservation. I met amazing people from all across the world, and it felt like home. Now i just regret i didnt stay longer, it was honesty the best time of my life and its really hard getting back to normal life when i have completed changed and everything back home is the complete same.

I totally understand this. My husband and I traveled for my job for almost 8 years. Then we came home, bought a house and surrounded ourselves with family. However, it’s been 4 years now and we both miss our travelers so much. Getting to see new places and meet new people was amazing. Don’t get me wrong, being home around our children and grand children is amazing…..but we really miss being on the road.

I am beyond touched to see this - I honestly didn't even realise this is what I was experiencing, and various times of my life that have been more challenging. It's actually MAD. Thank you so much for touching our hearts with your stories and I deeply resonate. So grateful 🥰

Wow, i was just talking to a friend this morning about feeling sad post my trip to Peru at the end of april. I spent the week there with a close friend and one of her close friends. It was so transformative that i didn't want to come back to Michigan, and i miss Peru every day. Most of the people I've talked to have said "well now you're refreshed, aren't you so glad to be back home??" And no, i just want to keep traveling now! No one understands the sadness I've been feeling about missing Peru, so thank you so much for validating this feeling. I had no idea post travel depression was even a thing until now. I've been playing spanish music and listening to the spanish guitar almost daily, and I've been practicing my spanish for a month now!!

Totally is a thing! So very common and omg, Peru is definitely a transformative place. I was there in October (I have a couple vlogs from the trip on this channel) and it's just so incredible in so many ways. I totally get you. Hope this video helped you feel a bit better :)

Experiencing this for the first time. Went to on my first solo trip to the phillipines, first solo trip ever and first time back in my home country in 7 years. I have never been so welcomed and loved from family, friends and strangers. Coming back to the states after just 1 month was a huge shock, struggling but ik it will be ok.

What was one of the best things about your trip? I definitely can relate to loving parts of the place you're from but perhaps, loving more about another place. Then you start feeling a pull to the idea of, hey maybe I could live somewhere else?

I went on a bucketlist trip to Egypt this year. I went with some girls from Trova. I loved it so much that I wanted to bring my mom with me on the next one and even wanted to sign up with the girls again. Turns out I'm like 98% percent that I have now been blocked and blacklisted by the hosts and I'm not sure why. I enjoyed it and loved our guide. It's really hard to not let this "clique" "bully" behavior not damper my experience and reflection of the trip. I know not everyone gets along but I never got closure on what feels like such rejection on what's to build a community.

Are you talking about TrovaTrip? That's awful. I'm sorry that happened to you. If you ever want to join a group trip that is inclusive, always has the BEST people on them, you can check out our group trips. We'd love to have you and your mom. We have our next trip in July: hopscotchtheglobe.com/costa-rica-blue-zone-experience/ I know I'm bias, but they are the absolute best and anyone who's been on one can attest to this.

100% it’s such a privilege and blessing to be able to travel but as someone who already struggles with mental health issues the post travel depression is way too real! I also feel that I can’t tell anyone I feel sad out of fear that you will be judged for feeling depressed after traveling when they didn’t have the opportunity to do so themselves

After 8 years in SE Asia, ill be going home in a few months with two dogs, husband and two kids 😂 Terrified of the reverse culture shock. I fully accept that i wont connect with friends the same as before, even family. It will take time to adjust but it will also get better.

If you get post travel depression, does that mean your daily life sucks?
@hopscotchtheglobe

It's all a matter of perspective. But generally if you feel low or you're going through something, normal day to day things might not feel as good as they usually do. I hope if you're going through that, know there's always a reason and there are so many others going though it and that feeling doesn't last. We are human and we feel the full spectrum of emotion and that is all part of the human experience.

If you watch the video, I don't say I'm going through it. I'm referring to all the people who've messaged me over the past 11 years who have and are going through it, and this a video for them. Maybe show a bit of compassion.

Interesting, I have been traveling the world for photography for fifty plus years, never feel the way you describe. Get over it, love the experience and head out again. Don’t overthink the whole travel thing. Never had depression. It was always a high.

I feel like these experiences happen during the most life changing experiences during travel or when you've been gone for an extended period of time.

I didn't realize going through a life changing experiences, no matter what that is, is a first world problem? Yes travel is a privilege, but the feeling of sadness, confusion, feeling lost ... All of that is universal
