Have you ever attempted a daily project? If so, what was it and how did it go?

No, I haven't. I am going to start, now, though! I just recently started drawing, and your videos have been the fire in my soul that is helping me realize that drawing is doable and approachable for me! Thank you!

"If you're selling to everyone, you're selling to no one." 😉Great tips, I'm really motivated to start a daily drawing project. Now I just have to start, which is obviously the hardest thing. 😆

Ahh there it is. I think there's another variation I was thinking of too.. probably several now that I think of it. Glad you found this helpful! Starting is definitely the hardest. The beginning in general is the hardest, but the longer you go the easier it gets-at least that's how it was for me!

Your point number one is right on the money. I make fonts for a living and some of my least successful fonts are ones that I thought "the market" wanted, but which I wasn't that excited about. Making fonts to please myself, fonts that I wish existed, instead of what I think other people would like, or trying to follow trends, has been a much better strategy for me.

Bro. You might consider turning your "like and subscribe" request into a daily drawing challenge and/or series, or both! I think it would be a cool way to remove yourself from the awkward nature or doing so, as well as give your videos a nice kick at the end that adds uniqueness!

As a freesssssh new graphic design student dabbling with illustration this video is fire. Thank you! I loooove your advice because its so practical and scalable. Definitely love the alphabet and lyrics series ideas for a newbie like me to practice! How about a board game series? Like snakes and ladders but the chess version! Or a "if your pet was a politician for a day" series...Yikes. Thanks Chris! This has got the old noodles rollin' and boilin'!

I did a 100 day project in 2020 and I drew/created somehow the word "sugar" for 100 days. It really gave me something to look forward to that year. Series' of drawings are such a good idea! Your bicycle series makes me wonder how you remembered all the details about all the bikes you had. Seems like a good therapeutic exercise to examine personal memories like that to extract details and then draw them. Good talk!
@chris-piascik

Thanks Annabelle! That sugar project sounds sweet! 😉 It's funny-it wasn't hard for me to remember specific details about the bikes, I can still picture them all crystal clear. Ask me about anything important or useful and I'm in trouble.

I love your reference to not being able to do the #3 with your fingers because of drawing; I’ve never been ever to do so because I have short little fingers, but now I’m going with it being a sign of an artist and I’m going to use that as my first drawing prompt.

This is a great video. All very helpful stuff. I think the most helpful comment was your admittance of your current creative block. Sometimes just hearing that someone else, especially a respected professional, is feeling the same struggles as I am releases me of some of the guilt? I guess that's what it is? of not being able to get out of a creative slump. TMI maybe, but I appreciate what you're doing here. Thank you!
@chris-piascik
@chris-piascik Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jacob! Everyone goes through blocks, it's nothing to feel bad about. That said, it can feel intense or hopeless-it sometimes does for me. I think my worst block came shortly after my kid was born a little over a year ago. I think a lot of it came down to the lack of sleep and just overall upheaval of my life. Currently I'm able to come up with things for client work, but I'm still very-much struggling with personal work. I hate it.

You are definitely entertaining. I know this sounds corny and it is in my graphic memoir of being a caregiver, of how I got back into art caregiving and I encourage caregivers to use art to help themselves and their caregivees. I went to a lot of paint nites and made my mother tell me what I still needed, since looking at a picture is more challenging for our brain than chess. I now do a monthly bullet journal theme and draw a memory of each day to keep drawing digitally and manually. I've been doing classic cartoons and Nov was Fat Albert and Dec is the original Dr. Suess Grinch story. Your tips follow the principle. Do what you love, and the money will follow. Are you editing your videos yourself, or paying someone, because damn is it a huge pain in the butt editing.

Thanks so much Kaylene. I appreciate you sharing about your projects! I have been editing myself, it is very time-consuming but I sort of enjoy it. I've considered having someone else do it, but I feel like it might cut out some of the "humor".

1 and 2 are really great explanations/expansions on why "niche down" and "lean into your weird" are common/good advice! I recently started a series, with the intent to practice 2D animation/motion graphics, of homophones morphing into each other. You were kind enough to share my pear/pair morph over on IG. And it does feel like magic! I'd be excited to see more thought process type tutorials on different motion concepts and tools. Back to series - I also have a bunch of colorful sneakers that I want to make little illustrations of. They'd be fun on their own, but I also think it'd be a kind of cool to do *ALL* of them, as a sort of collection-as-self portrait thing.

I saw that you did some art work for GT. I used to race BMX back in the 80's and 90's so seeing your drawings of your BMX bikes was pretty rad. I don't have any of my old BMX bikes anymore although I wish I did because some of them are worth some serious coin. The only bike I ride around on now is my Subrosa Slayer collab UTB bike. I know my comment was off topic but that part of your video showing your bike art inspired me. Keep up the great work and stay rad!

Thanks for the comment Christopher. I also raced BMX a bit in the 90's. I didn't do it too long because I realized I had more fun trying to do tricks than going fast and trying not to get too much air. Glad you liked my bike drawings! I don't have any of my old BMX bikes anymore either... That's Subrosa is a cool bike.
