Thank you for this, Dr. Kim Especially the part about how society says mothers 'should' feel after the birth of a child. This is my population that I work with and so many mother struggle with the fact that motherhood is difficult as well as rewarding and this causes so much guilt, sadness and depression.

Hi Rhonda. Thank you so much for your comments. Couldn’t agree more. Hopefully our country continues to raise awareness about this topic and not just raise awareness but increase funding for resources and improve access to care. I still get shocked at how many people feel that postpartum depression is “made up”. I’m also not a fan of the term “baby blues” because usually that term is preceded by the word “just”. “Don’t worry, it’s just the baby blues”. I don’t think we should over diagnose postpartum depression, but I feel like fluff articles in magazines almost make a joke out of the “baby blues” it may make some mothers downplay their struggles or blow off or miss warning signs of developing postpartum depression. Thanks so much for what you do! Hope you and your loved ones are well and safe.

I know of someone who never had any issues..nor any mental issues. As a matter of fact they work in the medical field. They were Not diagnosed with Postpartum Psychosis yet they were diagnosed with, "Bipolar with Psychotic Features." What gives? I'm really confused.

That’s a very, very good question. If someone displays features of psychosis for the first time in their postpartum period, such as postpartum depression with psychotic features, it often raises a high level of suspicion that they may have had undiagnosed bipolar disorder this entire time without them or anyone realizing it. It’s not an automatic diagnosis, as you need to take a careful history. But, it actually is common that if psychosis is happening in the postpartum period, that there is the possibility it is due to an underlying bipolar disorder that hadn’t been recognized as of yet.

@@AndrewKimMD Wow! If one of the parents has bipolar or schizophrenia, does this mean all of their children will have bipolar or schizo eventually? Thank you so much for your knowledge! This was a real eye opener.
