WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE | Postpartum bleeding is normal but what’s normal bleeding after birth and what’s not? In this video, we discuss bleeding after birth and more specifically, POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE. By the end of this video, you will understand a few cause of postpartum hemorrhage, how much blood is normal after giving birth, and recovering after birth if you’ve experienced excessive vaginal bleeding after birth. We also discuss how labor induction especially with a pitocin induction is correlated to blood loss after labor and how to avoid too much blood loss by avoiding inducing labor, utilizing fundal massage, etc.
Postpartum healing is important to know about regardless of what happens during labor and delivery. If you’re not sure about what happens during birth or postpartum, you’re going to love this video and the BUILT TO BIRTH ONLINE CLASS! Check out the link below for more information!

I gave vaginal birth about a week ago. I hemorrhaged right after birth …… they did give me Pitocin. But they didn’t check my hemoglobin levels before I left, just recommended I eat a high iron diet. I want to say I was slightly anemic before and didn’t know it. Anyway, I went home and felt fine until I didn’t feel fine, almost 3 days later we took baby in to be checked for jaundice, I got out of the house and realized I was lightheaded, felt like I was going to pass out. After food and drink didn’t help I knew something was up. I was admitted for a blood transfusion since I was symptomatic. It did help but didn’t make me 100% better. Anyway, now home recovering still. Thanking God for His provision in going back, it might of been bad if we hadn’t taken baby to get checked. God is good, faithful. Question: Is it normal to still be experiencing cramping & soreness?

I hemorrhaged about a week after delivery. I was anemic going into labor and had to be induced due to PROM. What was odd for me was that I had very minimal bleeding and cramping after delivery and then started heavily bleeding which prompted me to go to the ER. I love your videos! Your breathing videos really helped me during labor. Do you think you could do a video about preeclampsia? I don’t think it gets discussed enough and the symptoms are so tricky because they often mimic regular pregnancy symptoms, so sometimes it’s hard for mommas or those around them to see the warning signs.

I learned in my birth class (I took the Bradley method class) that women who ate at least 60-75 grams (research and double check the amount, but I think that's what it was) of protein per day NEVER got preeclampsia. So I would just make sure that you're getting plenty of protein in and you should be fine. Again, do your own research there, but I think more women should know about that.

@oliviab5358
@oliviab5358 2 ай бұрын
@@jullyanacoronado8549 I actually did not experience a hemorrhage again however the cause of it happened again. With my first I had retained placenta in me for over 5 weeks which was basically causing my uterus to go septic and that’s is what caused the hemorrhage. After having my second I was extremely sick a week later with severe abdominal pain and fever, low blood pressure, and after a scan found out it was retained placenta once again. My doctors were shocked that this happened to me again as they had never seen the same person experience this twice. We caught it at a perfect time before a hemorrhage happened, however the pain I experience this time was definitely worse. I was in the hospital even longer this time with the surgery(4 days) it was very frightening. Even after surgery I continued to bleed and pass clots for a few weeks and then I was given some sort of pill to make me bleed the rest out, I am unsure what it was called. However what happened to me seemed very rare from what I understand, and I would go through it all again and again to have my second child!

Hi! @jullyanacoronado8549 I did experience a retained placenta again (which caused my first hemorrhage) after having my second. However this time it was less than a week later instead of 5. Last time the hemorrhage and cramping was the first indication something was wrong, this time I began running a fever, having severe abdominal pain, shakes, and low blood pressure. I needed surgery again and was in the hospital double the amount of time in comparison to the first time. We spent 3 days in the hospital when he was born, 2 at home, and then another 4 when I was back in the hospital for surgery. My first child was only 19.5 months at the time and it was the first time I ever had to be away from him. It absolutely wrecked me mentally in the beginning. After surgery I continued to bleed for a few weeks, and was given some sort of pill to pass all the blood. My doctor was very perplexed by my situation, she had never seen the same mom experience retained placenta twice, and also experience bleeding even after surgery and ultrasound to confirm everything was out. I struggled with postpartum depression for about 5 months before I started feeling okay again. My second child is now a year and a half old, and we are both doing great. However I would be lying if I said I am unsure about having a third child now. The whole situation was very frightening, but it doesn’t seem very common!!

@vanessa7566
@vanessa7566 3 жыл бұрын
@@divinelove1273 hi! So having multiples, being induced & use of Pitocin in the induction, and having epidural all increase the risk of hemorrhage in l&d which is everything I had done with my boys so no wonder I hemorrhaged! At 37 weeks pregnant with my twin boys I was induced using a saline filled balloon it brought me from 3 to 5 cm however my labor didn't progress so I was put on pitocin, Then I got the epidural because I was scared of having emergency c section and didn't want to be put under anesthesia. About 4 hours after I gave birth the doctor was making her round sin recovery and she noticed I was very pale and she asked me questions and I told her my symptoms (weird feeling in my chest) so she checked me down below and I was hemorrhaging internally she then used her hands to scoop out all the clotting and clean inside me. I had no idea I was hemorrhaging the twins were my first babies and I wasn't sure what to expect thank God the doctor was knowledgeable. I'm not sure what happened after she was scooping the clots out bc I blacked out from the pain. I'd say just be cautious and knowledgeable regarding your delivery so you are confident. My husband is a nurse supervisor and I'm also in the medical field so we are strong advocates for health care. Don't be deterred or dismissed protect yourself and ask questions about anything you're feeling unclear on. I guess the only way you can really help prep yourself to protect from hemorrhaging is trying out the raspberry leaf tea! I used it this last pregnancy and gave birth 04/2021 and did not hemorrhage. I of course told them I had a history of it & they gave me a shot of pitocin in my leg after birth to help prevent it. Read pros and cons of pitocin/& induction & whether you'd like to try laboring naturally or if you need an epidural. Congratulations on the twins, it's truly beautiful being a twin mommy, dont get me wrong it's a lot of work but the love is overwhelming & almost every day I tear up watching them play together bc they just love each other so much and are best friends and it's beautiful seeing their connection!! You've got this and I'm praying for a beautiful and safe delivery for you.

I had my daughter on 2/3/22 & 10 days later, I'll never forget, Sunday the 13th, the day before Valentine's day, I had a severe delayed post partum hemorrhage. I was taking a shower when I started to bleed and this was just a full flow, it came on and I had no idea because, I felt nothing!!.. until I looked down and was like... uh oh. I waited a few minutes because... it should stop soon right? Wrong. in less then 30 minutes I lost almost 40% of the blood in my body and went into hypovelimic shock, my organs weren't getting enough oxygen and I died. Eyes wide open, white as a sheet, I started to hallucinate and then I was gone. I live in a small town so I knew some of the first responders, and the firefighter who got there first sought me out a week or so later to.. well just to see me, because he saw me die. They brought me back and got me on a helicoptor to Albany med where they took good care of me. all that said, I Was induced, because she was measuring small and I had to get ultrasounds every week for the last 2 months of my pregnancy.. they wanted to induce to decrease risk of stillbirth. it was a long labor because it was induced. I had a lot of extra fluid also. all things that can cause a pph. I did breastfeed immediately and had plenty of good cramps for those first few days.. but then the cramps went away and the bleeding was very light.. I thought I was just lucky, and maybe because she was my 4th I was just getting a break.. wrong again! I was bleeding internally, my uterus was filling up with blood.. until it all came out, at once. I said goodbye to my family, I said goodbye to life. I was terrified. Please pay attention!!! If you're not bleeding very much after giving birth, its probably not a lucky break. If you have a lot of fluid Know that you are at a higher risk of developing PPH. And a long prolonged labor also puts you at risk. Due diligence ladies!!! I had no idea I was in the state I was until it was all but too late.

Oh my gosh, thank you for this video. I just gave birth a week ago and this happened to me on day 6. I was absolutely terrified because I lost so much blood so quickly and didn’t know what was happening to me. Thankfully, the ER pumped me full of fluid right away (because naturally, losing that much blood made me severely dehydrated), but it turns out that that was all I needed. They checked my red blood cell count levels and they were good, so other than treating the dehydration, they explained that this was my uterus expelling blood and tissue but all at once rather than over the course of days/weeks. Doctor ordered me to drink as much fluids as I could to offset the blood loss and sent me home. The bleeding finally stopped that night, but I instantly felt better after the IV fluids. That’s the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me.

During the 3rd massage a large gush of blood came out so the nurse measured it and it was over 700ml. You’re at risk of hemorrhaging again since it happened with your first. If you give birth in a hospital they can give you preventative medication during labor to ensure you don’t hemorrhage. It’s so dangerous… and you can pass away so quickly without medical intervention. It’s the #1 cause of maternal death worldwide. The risk of it repeating is worth giving birth in a hospital. Although I’m sure it’s very hard to separate with the idea of a home birth. But your children deserve to have their mother and you don’t deserve to have to go through that again unprepared.

After my son they told me no more babies. I wanted at least 3, maybe 4. I’m blessed that both kids were healthy. My daughter had to stay in hospital about 10 days to reach 5 lbs.

In the case of an after delivery constipation with piles you should take regularly 1 tablespoon (= 15 ml) castor oil early in the morning on an empty stomach; 1 to 2 hours after having swallowed this dosage you will have an easy bowel movement without any pain.

I definitely believe i was built to birth, just had my 3rd child. Hes 2wks tomorrow. I still would love another but idk if it is possible now. I had a mild-bad pph with my 2nd, tht needed surgery to repair but with my recent I had a severe pph and was put under to fix the hemmorage. I actually had a near death experience; saw heaven.. I dnt think my body will survive afterbirth again. I can get pregnant, carry it fine evn hvn a hard 9mnths with hyperemesis gravidarum, with your hypnobirthing which I used recently, I can endure labour well, birth well, its almost painless (thats how well your hypnobirthing helped)... but I have no control over the risks of the pph and it taking my life and leaving my kids motherless. I just am at a loss of what to do. Accepting the fact tht if I want another child, they and my kids will not hv a mother as the price. I cant do that to my kids I hv now. Only 4, 2 & 2wks old. My uterus is not strong enough.

I was induced with my first baby. I had a smooth labor and delivery, no epidural, minimal tearing and pushed him out easily. Two hours after delivery, I started hemorrhaging. They couldn’t get the bleeding to stop. In total I lost at least 3500 ml of blood, had 6 blood transfusions, had to transfer hospitals and had to have an embolization done to stop the bleeding. It was so scary and I was so close to dying or having a hysterectomy. I am scared of it happening again in the future, but I think the pitocin induction was a main contributor to the severe hemorrhage. I hope that is the case because I can just avoid induction in the future. Part of me wishes I didn’t get induced if that is really what caused the hemorrhage but I believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe something worse would have happened if I wasn’t induced.

I think doctors need to learn to understand this, I think I started bleeding too much when my baby was 4 weeks. I was dizzy and the doctor just asked me if I was pregnant because he thought it was a miscarriage but I didn’t have any sec yet 😟 he want concerned by all the bleeding at all, but it was so heavy it soaked through my clothes and fell on my shoes. I feel lucky I didn’t die because doctors didn’t believe me about how much blood there was. I was only 17.

I gave birth to my daughter and they set her on me. my bleeding got way to out of control and my midwive had to call in doctors and nurses. i couldn’t breathe, i couldn’t think. i didn’t feel me giving birth due to having the epidural it was nice and smooth. barley felt her come out. It was after that i really felt. once the doctors and nurses came in to help my midwive with the bleeding i was so out of it. i lost ab 1,700 milliliters of blood when α normal birth you usually lose about 500-600. i was so weak and all i could feel was both of there hands down far up there trying to find where the blood was coming from. i was so sad i couldn’t have my baby in my arms way longer then what she was. i’m just so happy they took 2 hours to actually work and care for me after birth. i got my blood back to normal and i got to feeling better the next day. Definitely so scary to go through and even more scarier that i’m at α high risk now :/

I hemorrhages with my first birth. I did a lot of research and during my second pregnancy I asked my provider several times what we could do to prevent it from happening again. Delivery day came. I had done all the natural things you mentioned in this video. And they knew I had hemorrhaged in the past. It took a long time for my placenta to come out. When it did it came out in pieces. I felt like I was going to pass out and turned pale. They had to do a D&C to remove the rest. Both births started on their own and were fully unmedicated. I had an amazing doula who helped so much through the whole thing. I did have it in my birth plan to get Pitocin if needed after birth. I’m nervous about having more babies down the road. Do you have any more suggestions?

I'm from the UK. Midwives are not trained enough to deal with a severe, or life threatening haemorrhage. The consultant teams at the hospital are the only ones qualified to accurately estimate blood loss, to identify shock and deterioration, and to make quick decisions on interventions such as transfusion in an emergency.
@maitecatherinedewit

@@BigBirdCEO well, I gave birth at home in the bath tub and it was amazing. I heard that midwives watch you like a hawk when you give birth at home and will call 911 or equivalent in time even if it is 't needed in the end. Now, in The Netherlands it takes less than 10 minutes before they arrive. If you live in a country where this isnt the case or when you live very far away, I can understand you want to give birth in the hospital. However, if you are well prepared, calm and you have a good midwive, the chances of severe pps are low and I would rather have a calm delivery at home, than having to rush into the hospital and potentially slow down the birth. Any way, everyone should choose for themselves.

I had my first baby in July. My pregnancy was great up until 36 weeks. Well actually 34 weeks.my ankles swelled extremely bad but i was told it was normal pregnancy swelling. At 36 weeks my water broke, i called my midwife and i was told to come in. When they took my BP i was put straight in a room and 10 mins later a team of dr.s and nurses came in and told me i had severe preclampsia. I was supposed to have a water birth but that went out the window. They put me on magnesium so that i wouldnt have a seizure from the HBP. I was in labor for 26hrs. They ramped me up on pitocin i was on that for a while..after some time my baby was in distress.evertime i had a contraction her heart beat slowed or stopped so the midwife came in and said she needed to check me so we could get the baby out. Her head was right there but i didn't know bc of the epidural. I pushed 5 times and she was out, no tears. The midwife told me i was bleeding a little than she liked so she put a pill in my my rectum. I felt completely fine. I had no idea i was on the high risk floor the whole time.. when i got to my room probably 45 mins later i sat up in bed and blood gushed out of me. I told the nurse and before i knew it there were like 7 ppl in my room. The dr was pulling out huge clots..my BP dropped to like 68 they said..i was sooo scared..i started praying.i told the nurse to let me kiss my baby bc i didn't know what was about to happen.i lost 1800ml and had 2 transfusions the next day. My heart rate got up to 180 from losing so much blood..that was indeed the scariest thing i've ever been through. I still deal with mental trauma i wake up everyday with it on my mind. I thank God that I'm here and they were able to stop the bleeding fast. I had to take BP meds for a few months afterwards. My baby is 6 months now. I will never have another bc im too scared

I had a really bad PPH after delivering the placenta and lost more than 3.5 L of blood really quickly when my uterus wouldn’t contract. I was induced at 38 weeks due to oligohydramnios and had a pretty normal labor; labor lasted 12.5 hrs, after getting an epidural I progressed from 3cm to 10cm in an hour and pushed for an hour and a half. Baby was healthy and 7lbs 13oz and I thought everything was fine until I started feeling huge quantities of blood shoot out when they started doing fundal massage and they said they were having trouble stopping the bleeding. My husband thought I was dying and they said worst case scenario I’d need a hysterectomy. I had to give my baby to my husband so they could take me to the OR and I was gone for more than 3hrs right after she was born and it made breast feeding very difficult. Thankfully I was at a big hospital and they had very quick access to blood and enough staff to help me. I was already pretty anemic in my 3rd trimester and my blood counts kept dropping despite being on iron 2x a day. I didn’t have any retained placenta but the OB had to manually remove all of the clots and was basically elbow deep into my uterus and I had a failed epidural that completely stopped working at 10cm so it was excruciating. The bleeding still didn’t stop after removing the clots and giving me all of the hemorrhage meds so they had to put a Bakri Balloon and packing in my uterus and a drain. They gave me multiple units of blood and plasma and IV iron. I’m thankful I was at a hospital because I probably would have died otherwise. Unfortunately breast feeding didn’t work out and I’ve been exclusively pumping but my supply took a huge hit because of the blood loss and we’ve had to largely supplement with formula.
