POTASSIUM (K) is a critical electrolyte that works across cell membranes in conjunction with Sodium. It is part of the mechanism that allows for the correct passage of chemicals through the membranes. Most people are deficient in Potassium to some degree. An extreme deficiency is known as Hypokalemia.
Below is a list of typical symptoms of a Potassium deficiency. Note the first six can also be symptoms of a Magnesium deficiency, so it is easy to confuse the two, though in most cases if you are deficient in one you will likely be deficient in the other. One symptom in the list (Oedema, #4) does not occur with a Mg deficiency, so this could help you tell.
1) Anxiety (ie worry; not to be confused with Depression)
2) Insomnia
3) High Blood Pressure
4) Fluid Retention (swollen/puffy ankles and feet, called "oedema")
5) Lower Leg or Foot Cramps (particularly at night)
6) Constipation
7) Arrhythmias (either Heart Palpitations, or a Racing Heart/Tachycardia)
You might not have all of these symptoms, but if you have 4 or 5 of them and are concerned, you should consider the high possibility that this is your issue (which is good news, as it’s easy to fix!) I suffered from ALL SEVEN (in addition to further symptoms of Mg deficiency - see link below to video about MAGNESIUM) but cured all of them quite quickly once I understood my problem.
Reasons for being low in Potassium include:
1) Poor Diet (inadequate Potassium intake due to processed food and too much carbohydrate/sugar)
2) Excessive Alcohol Use (alcohol is a diuretic)
3) Insulin Resistance (pre-diabetes/obesity)
4) Medications that are diuretic
5) Short Term Illness with Vomiting or an Upset Stomach
6) Excessive Sweating (in hot weather or from intense exercise)
7) High water intake with low electrolytes
8) Kidney Disease (kidneys regulate Potassium levels)
9) Stress (the stress hormone Cortisol interferes with the kidneys’ ability to recover Potassium from the urine)
(As most of these problems also affect your Magnesium levels, it is common to be deficient in both)
Foods rich in Potassium:
1) Green leafy vegetables, especially the Brassica family (cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower) as well as asparagus and spinach.
2) Nuts (especially almonds)
3) Avocados
4) Salmon or other cold water, oily fish
PLEASE NOTE blood test results will not tell you your Potassium is low, unless you are critically ill, and need to be hospitalized immediately. Your body controls the serum Potassium (ie blood Potassium) very strictly so the level is always within a “normal” range in a test, but it will not show that Potassium is low in the muscles and tissue fluid. The best way to diagnose this is by noting the symptoms, using some common sense when looking at the possible causes, then addressing it to see if the symptoms improve.
*Do not use a Potassium supplement if you are on any heart medication*, particularly for BP, as many BP meds (like LOSARTAN) are high in Potassium themselves (so you are effectively already supplementing). *DISCUSS SUPPLEMENTING WITH YOUR DOCTOR OR CARDIOLOGIST*.
If you do supplement Potassium, it is advisable to supplement Magnesium at the same time as the deficiency symptoms are similar, and so are the causes. Experiment with levels of supplementation, but it makes sense to start on 400mg per day. If this is not helping after a week, speak to your doctor.

I know you say check with your doctor about this or that but most doctors don't care or know about natural ways of treating illnesses. They only want to put you on drugs and give you tests and procedures for the bottom line money. Sad but true. I have afib and my cardiologist has never mentioned electrlytes. Im going to try a potassium supplement and see how that helps. I'm on an arrhythmia medication so I dont know how I'm supposed to know if it helps. I dont want to be on medication. Love your channel just found it and subscribed.

@Abigail2795 Hey Abigail, yes some doctors are just making money, but more often they are overworked and dont have time to keep up with new science, so they trust the drug companies that tell them what's new and give them new meds to push. The traditional way of training doctors has also always been focussed on meds (they even call it "studying medicine" - they should be at college studying "Health" for goodness sakes!) But it's definitely changing. I've had many interesting conversations with young doctors, around 30yrs old, and they mostly get it, so there's hope! - Andrew

@WildBill-py6vn I hear you Bill, but its never too late to try something else. Explore the electrolyte option, and take a VitD3 with VitK2 supplement. D3 helps manage the calcium level in your tissues (sends it to the bone instead of clogging things up and causing Afib) and K2 helps keep the arteries open. Neither of these will impact any meds. You are right about a lot of doctors (not all, obviously) but I think they also have a problem where a lot of patients EXPECT meds, rather than take responsibility and stop smoking, lose weight and get some exercise. Sadly I have good friends like that - obese, pre-diabetic, non-exercising who eat terribly and on all sorts of horrible diabetes drugs and statins - they ask me for advice, then ignore it completely. I guess I can only help people who want to help themselves :-( -Andrew

If you want to eat oxalate foods, have calcium foods with them as the calcium binds with the oxalates and expelles them through the gi tract. If you have a problem with kidney stones, stick with 50 to 100 grams of oxalates per day.

I also discovered Sally Norton's videos on oxalates, and tried eating plain spinach 2 or 3 days in a row without cheese, or calcium, etc. and got burning on urination. A friend got a huge kidney stone from eating spinach, though I don't the details of how it was prepared. Eating with calcium the oxalates bind with calcium and oxalates get excreted. I feel safer eating from cabbage family, broccoli, but definitely plan on including cheese.

🇬🇧Potassium is not included in any multi vitamin/mineral tablet I have seen presumably because you need so much every day it would be too bulky? 1.5 Grams I have read. Finding a potassium-only source is difficult but Holland and Barrett sell one that I use at 396mg per tablet with a suggested daily intake of four. I take one per day as a background amount. You can also buy a product called Low Salt that balances Sodium and Potassium (both required in your cell structure) to use for cooking and sprinkling on your meals.😉 NB: some dried fruits such as raisins and sultanas have good amounts of potassium, I like fruit breads which use these fruits.

Just finished this video and your Heart AFIB video. I'm almost 53. When covid lockdowns hit, my alcoholism got way worse; and my diet was never great in the first place. Ironically, my diet became more limited during covid lockdowns because I thought just eating more of about 3 things would make me healthy. So I ended up getting extremely depleted from Potassium, and (you might find this interesting) Phosphorus. I developed very bad afib... I often couldn't even feel my heartbeat. So I researched all I could and knew I had very low Potassium. COOKED spinach has far more Potassium than raw; and if you use as little water as possible to cook it, and drink that water too, you'll get even more. 10-15 oz of black or pinto beans also can give you about 25% of the RDI (100% is 1700mg). Potatoes are also a very good source of Potassium. But my afib was really resulting more from a depletion of Phosphorus. Like I said, I believed I was eating better, but humans need something of variation in their diet. Alot of fast food and junk food and canned food surprisingly, at least in America, is often fortified with Phosphorus. Somehow, I had naively eliminated all sources of Phosphorus from my diet... But as soon as I deliberately reintroduced it back into my diet, my afib cleared up within a few days. Good sources of Phosphorus are walnuts, almonds, tuna (even cheap canned), chicken and potatoes. Canned beef soups are often fortified with Phosphorus, it probably helps as a preservative.

Hydrogen Phosphate (HPO4++) is one of the seven essential electrolytes and it's manufactured by the body, but you need enough Phosphorous to be able to make it. It's unusual to be low as its in all living creatures (plants and animals) maybe as you say you were eating terribly, or maybe you have a problem absorbing it? Andrew

@@shapefixer You do great work, keep it up! I was continually not eating enough of the wide variety of nutrition we need. And, perhaps my worsening alcoholism contributed to the acceleration of depletion. Of course, I'm only speculating.

Likewise, I have a GP and a kidney doctor. I mention potassium and both gave me a "deer in headlight" response, that is, none. I have high BP, and w high BP and high heart rate (I on metoprolo) cites the usual suspects, ignores the subject of Ka. However, Dr Eric Berg on hi s video on epic emic deficiency of Ka, does commented tdhat unless you are in sage 5, you can take supplemental Ka. But now I learn from this video that if you are on Losartan (I no longer), stay clear as the kidney will retain Ka. I am noticing a decline in my systolic since taking 600 mg of Ka a day. I will know more in a few weeks. I hope my comment elicit some response from people with stage 3 CKD and how they are dealing with Ka. thanks.

My way of dealing with lower potassium levels (please judge for yourself if it could work for you): I fill a bottle with tap water and sprinkle 3 grams of potassium-containing 'salt' in it (= 60% pure pot.). To make the drink bearable I then pour some lemonade syrup in. As a bonus, I spritz some lemon juice in the solution: the enhanced acidity helps to reduce the forming of kidney stones.

I fairly recently started having arrhythmia my cardiologist prescribed Bisoprolol and I take 5mg of Perindopril for high blood pressure. I do suffer with hot flushes and night sweats, during the summer on very hot days I also get odema. I haven't suffered with cramp in my legs since I stopped the stations but do have an occasional weird cramp in my fingers and the 2 smallest toes. Sleep is OK but I usually wake every 2 hours or so to pee. I'm 62 so post menopausal but still have most of the symptoms, oh and I did have an MI 7 years ago and at the last cardiologist visit he told me I have mitral valve regurgitation. I'm of the opinion that your body tells you what it needs by certain cravings, like the first time my feet and ankles swelled I craved pistachios, I had never particularly liked them before but I was munching them like they were going out of fashion. I looked up their nutritional value and found they were good healthy blood flow, I've replaced omeprazole with a couple of cardomom pods in my coffee each day. I'm not sure whether I have insufficient potassium or not, I don't use a lot of salt in my cooking but recently the food on my plate tastes like it needs more salt, so perhaps I do.

@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
@mollythorpe3545 Hey Molly, thanks for the encouraging words. I haven't done a video on Alzheimers but I'm definitely planning to so please stay engaged with the channel for now. Briefly, the new science is all pointing to Alzheimer's being an avoidable, and even reversibale, condition that has sugar as the underlying culprit. Years and years - decades - of sugar abuse through carbohydrates (which are, after all, just disguised sugar) forming the basis of our diet. Sugar added to everything, unnaturally swollen juicy out-of-season fruit, sugary drinks and fruit juices, bread, pasta, grains, potatoes.... everything made from wheat flour... starch and other carbohydrates are all just sugar. Entirely. "Sugar" is glucose, sucrose or fructose. "Starch" just means a bunch of sugar molecules linked in long chains. All of them together are "carbohydrates". So the way to manage Alzheimers, or to prevent it, is to get rid of as much sugar as you can, in any form it comes. Convert your body's engine from a sugar burner to a fat burner instead (fats and oils). Cleaner, more efficient energy source, without the side-effects associated with continuously elevating insulin after every meal to deal with the sugar. Then we address diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, heart disease and stroke risk, Alzheimer's, Parkinson`s and even most cancers (cancer cells LOVE sugar but most of them can't use fat; healthy cells can use either). I promise I will be doing several videos on different aspects of this in due course - Andrew

I was carrying a water bottle. I asked him what was wrong. He asked, "How much water do you drink?" I told him I was on an exercise program and I had a kidney stone, so I drank water all day long. He said "I know what's wrong with you. You're drinking too much water". Ummm wut ? He explained that I had been diluting my electrolytes. His advice, drink when I'm thirsty and drink vitamin water.

I’ve been eating high potassium foods and tracking my potassium as I need 4700mg per day. I was drinking water as the diuretic causes me to loose fluid. I spoke to my dr today due to numb finger tip and med change in progress. Meds can really screw you up if both are causing electrolytes losses.

Yes to have certain foods for their Potassium content can bring you into the watch your Oxcylates content, a problem for people with a concering Kidney issue. So what is an exceptable amount of Oxcylates for these people? I know Calcium helps with binding with Oxcylates.
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
@phillipswift3418 Yes, some of the green plants mentioned in the video are higher in oxylates, but unless you suffer from kidney stones it shouldn't be an issue. Oxylate deposits in the kidney are one type of kidney stones (there are others) but adequate fluid intake flushes the kidneys and helps to prevent oxylate build-up. (Oxylate is actually a waste product formed from the incomplete oxidation - ie "burning" - of sugars) I dont know how you would measure an "acceptable amount". I would say people with kidney issues should be talking to their doctor as kidney trouble can get very serious, very quickly. Perhaps in cases of people avoiding foods with oxylates, get Potassium from avocados rather than spinach, or take a Potassium supplement instead. Its tricky because it depends on the individual.

I eat twice a day now - a small meal at 3pm, then dinner at 9pm. So I "fast" 18 hours, but I don't even think about it because the food I eat (ie high fat, low/zero carb) keeps me going just fine and I dont get hungry (and I run or cylce pretty much every day too). The hunger and satiety hormones are regulated by available fat, but the presence of blood sugar and it's associated insulin rise sabotages their function with the result that eating carbs keeps us hungry for the next meal. That's why we eat too much and then develop problems with weight, and other metabolic diseases like diabetes, CVD etc.

The first thing is to make your self relax as stress itself will raise your heartbeat. Take a combination of Magnesium and Potassium electrolytes, and if you are like most people the heart rate will correct in a few days. If it doesn't work, make sure you are getting enougyh sunlight to produce Vitamin D in your skin - if not, get a D3 supplement with K2, about 4,000IU dose per day. That can also be the problem.

Hello Andrew, I just came across your channel this morning and have been watching your videos -- great info! I do have a question to clarify the amounts of potassium mentioned. You stated that one would need about 15 bananas a day to get ample potassium (daily). I looked it up and a medium size banana provides a bit over 400 mg of potassium, so 15 of those would provide roughly 6000 mg (or 6 g). Then you shared that you take a 400 mg daily supplement, which could be obtained from 1 banana. I'm just trying to clarify if the beneficial amount is in mg or g?
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
The potassium in bananas is not in the right form for absorption, which is why you'd need so many. >My daily supplement is sometimes 400mg, sometimes 800mg, and it works for me, but then I'm also getting Potassium in my food, so you need to just try and see how you go. Its not an "exact science", because its food, not medicine. - Andrew

@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
@Ljubica-rf2tb You'd have to figure out what is the most likely deficiency according to your symptoms and your lifestyle (eating habits, smoking, body weight, other meds, etc) but as a general starting point, most people are low in Potassium and Magnesium so I'd suggest a combination electrolyte with about 400mg of each per day. (You can get a flavoured one to dissolve in water, or just swallow it in tablet form). Magnesium Citrate or Magnesium Glycinate (or bi-glycinate, same thing) are probably the two best forms to absorb, and easy to find on Amazon or at your local drugstore. Just be careful with Potassium if you are on BP pills already (as per the video). - Andrew

@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
Low anion gap means your system is not acidic enough, apple cider vinegar would help. Gastritis just means "inflamed stomach", it doesn't actually tell us anything about the reason. Do you have a stomach ulcer? If so, you need to cure that first, before you can increase the acidity, as it will burn your stomach. Cutting sugars/carbohydrates will starve the bacteria (Heliobacter pylorii - they cause ulcers) of their food, and they will die; but it can take a while, so an antibiotic would be a good idea just to get ride of them quickly. Then stay away from carbohydrates (sugar) while the ulcers heal (so bacteria dont caome back), after which you can address the acidity with ACV.

@markrobinson2561 You'd need to get your doctor to send you for a tissue test. Blood (serum) test will usually tell you it's fine, so it's not helpful. High K (potassium) in urine is more helpful as it means your kidneys are getting rid of excess K (ie so you have enough), but can also be a sign of stress, and you're losing too much. As I said in the video, it's way easier to check all the symptoms (go to the notes in the video description) and the causes and figure it out, then try a supplement to see if you get better. Whether it works or not, either way you will then know.

Why did the doctor worry about high potassium level with afib, i was only eating one banana a day?
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
Strange doctor, there's not that much potassium you can access in a banana. Maybe you were on BP meds? "Losartan" for example is very high in Potassium (so pretty much does what a Potassium supplement would do anyway...) - Andrew

Hmmmm the ER Doctor apparently seriously tried to kill me his comment was well your kidneys are great. Potassium IV a potassium high dose pill and blood pressure with potassium. Shit I almost left my kid with out another parent. I quit taking the pills and started reading on food for potassium and blood pressure now I will add magnesium food to the rest.

LMNT Electrolyte powder is perfect for balancing potassium, magnisu,, sodium🔥🔥🔥
@weezyb.
@weezyb. 3 ай бұрын
I like LMNT electrolytes, too - using 1 packet per day. It really helps in getting that 64oz of water in me. But I’ve found that I need more for my heart, so I also take liquid magnesium & potassium. I fill empty #00 capsules with the minerals in liquid form making it very easy to take (2 capsules per mineral). No more a-fib!

Oh, and yes…so important to get enough sodium. Here in the US I purchase my salts online from Redmond. Excellent quality.

LMNT is mostly sodium, the potassium level is very low. Check zip fizz, they have a lot of Potassium and not so much sodium.

Hi, If my blood test shows anion gap is low, how do I increasing this gap? Thanks
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
Hi , it means your general acidity level is low (or somewhat confusingly, your pH is high). Do you suffer acid reflux? I would start off with a daily drink of a table spoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water (and a sqeeze of lemon juice if you prefer the taste). That is a cheap, simple step towards addressing acidity. Also cut back the refined carbohydrates/sugars, they play hell with your acidity. Some meds can contribute to this problem, especially if they contain Bromide or Lithium, so check anything you might be on then speak with your doctor, you might be able to switch to something else, or lower the dose.- Andrew

What's the best form of it to take and how much.
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
I take it as Potassium Glycinate, the one I use actually comes in an effervescent tablet (dissolves in water) that also contains Magnesium (in my case 375mg of each). Just be careful with a Potassium supplement if you are on a BP med, as that may already be high in Potassium (like LOSARTAN).

What happens if u get too much potassium ? I’m on losartin and have had bad palpitations since being on chemo. I’m convinced that I’m not absorbing enough magnesium as the chemo has thrown my system out of whack. What helps with absorption?

does magnesium potassium supplementation conflict with blood thinner medication or blood pressure medication and can cause bleeding? my only concern ... anyone ?.... please help
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
Ah, this Q. I mentioned in the video - perhaps you missed it, or didnt watch all of it - that potassium supplementation can interect with BP meds, because most BP meds are actually potassium based already. Therefore, if you are taking something like Losartan, speak to your doctor before adding potassium supplements. Magnesium is fine.

Warning! Add potassium only if your kidneys are in good health. If you suffer from any kidney ailments, consult your doctor or nephrologist before adding a supplement.

But do high carbs diets require the same potassium levels than very low carbers? Im HFLC, my potassium is hardly 1500mg a day. Yet no issues linking to P deficiency
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
How are you measuring 1500mg? There is Potassium in your food, not just a supplement. Anyhow, high carbers flush it out so yes they need more

@shapefixer thanks. No I'm saying 1500mg is from my foods. I don't like supps. Easy to calculate from the package/labels.

Stage 4 kidney disease means you cannot take in potassium. How to keep regulated?
@shapefixer
@shapefixer 3 ай бұрын
That is a really tough problem to have as it leads to high BP yet most BP meds are potassium based. This is definitely not something you can reverse with a home DYI approach. You need to work with your doctor and nephrologist and accept drastic interventions like dialysis and even a transplant could be life saving one day. ❤️❤️
