I had a helpful thought as i read your comment a small plastic bottle or bag kept close to the body under your coat should keep it at a decent enough temperature for fire lighting use i hope this suggestion helps

It's also very easy to start a friction fire with potassium permanganate and sugar. Sugar is an excellent fuel, and it takes just a little bit of friction to get a blaze going strong.

Yes, and you are more likely to have sugar than glycerin in a survival kit. And thus, because the PP serves to sterilize water it is multi-use. VERY important in my book.

Well done, very nicely explained. I wish I was still teaching chrmistry as I would show it to my pupils. You have slipped in to your explaination some important chemistryand chemistry terms eg. Oxidiser , exothermic reaction, glycerine and where to find it. Goodness knows what mischief they might get up to afterwards.

The reaction creates intense heat which will ignite most tinder materials... If the wood is damp it's always a good idea to cut a pile of dry shavings or feathersticks which will extend the burn time and allow the fire a chance to become established.

Thanks for the feedback. This is a new project and we're still finding our feet with it. Your point has been taken on board, and we'll be condensing the intro for future videos.

You know there is now a commercially available magic trick (or DVD of a magic trick) using this same chemical reaction selling for £20+ I can imagine a few magicians being pretty annoyed they didn't find this video!

Hi Andrew Price, Glad I have found your series. I have never seen you before so yes I am pleased to have found you. I use potassium permanganate all the time because I have eczema and are very open to infection. Have you tried or can you try these two substances KMn04 and Glycerol Try-nitrate to light fires. I am not in a position to do this as I am an invalid, but I use both these things the GTN Glycerol Try-nitrate? Many thanks for the uploads and will go and sub after I watch this video.

You forgot to say that it's really dependent of ambient temperature. It will never react in a cold winter or a cold night. That's why you're doing it on a sun spot. Why don't say that ?
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 7 жыл бұрын
I've had it work when it was extremely cold. Well below zero. When you're told something won't work at low temperatures, always take it with a grain of salt. Ambient temperature is what you make it. I've also had it work with pure glycerin well below what it's supposed to work at, even without pulling any tricks to heat it up. You really need to try things before believing what you read about them.

did not work for me can it be that its either too cold ..-30c outside or that I put too much glycerin ..Great vid btw

Annoying perhaps, but fake they most certainly are not. All our videos are filmed in genuine outdoor locations, so the sounds of wildlife are to be expected.

if the Potassium Permanganate crystals are large you may need to grind them down. The reaction is happening just too slow and will not create the flames.

Wow, so dangerous, you should not be encouraging people to use PP in such a careless way, it is a dangerous oxidizer, get it in your eyes your blind. It needs handling with upmost respecrt. Learn some real bushcraft.
