Loving the potato cakes recipe, Dave! My mother uses leftover mashed potatoes instead of grated ones. It gives the cake a sort of fluff. Definitely one of my favorite things she makes!

Wow, it looks so easy and good! I think I can try making this on Saturday with eggs instead of the chops (I have no meat in the icebox). Maybe I'll throw in some of your cornbread, too. Dang, watching these makes me hungry!

Dave, you know how to eat, man. That looks delicious. I might have to have it for breakfast one day this week. My GF and I collect cast iron and enjoy cooking out on the porch. We follow Cowboy Kent Rollins and have gone to some of his demonstrations as well as his restaurant in TX. Some of his recipes are a bit ambitious for me to want to try outside. Yours look delicious, but are a little more practical to do without an entire chuck wagon. Thanks for the content!

Down right Tasty fare! Thanks for video. Also, thanks for pointing out that sawmill gravy started out with cornmeal! Nobody seems to know that anymore. My Grandad made it with cornmeal for me when I was a boy. 👍🏽

Wow, the only thing missing from those potato cakes is a little fine chopped onion and a dash of ground garlic ( Bob's way). If you have never had these cakes you are in for a treat. I grew up on potato cakes like this. I can smell them cooking right now. My moms method was a tad different, she called the German style potato pancakes (Pennsylvania Dutch). Her recipe was one of only a few she guarded, I beged her for her recipe for years, never got it, so I'll try yours. (flour and milk) Dave, I'm sitting here at the computer and can smell and taste those potato cakes, just as if there is a plate full in front of me, that's how much I like them. Thanks for the tip. ;-)

David, i doubt you will see this but,... i love all of your videos. and as somebody who likes to eat, i really love the cooking videos. personally, i have never met some one who dosent like to eat... i think if you added some anecdotes or something, from your school to doing commercial fishing to what ever, i think eventually will draw in a much larger audience. anyway i thank you for all that you do.

Lord I miss eating like that . I cooked and ate like that for 66 years and ended up needing a triple bypass 5 weeks ago. Of course my main non-modifiable factor was in my genes. I did smoke for 8 years and my Parents and grandparents had heart disease also. So maybe eating the good stuff like this didnt totally cause my problem. I like Dave's cooking!

A stripper named, Honey, taught me how to make that gravy in Houston in the '80's. My buddy wound up marrying her - she was that good of a cook. LOL The only thing I'd add to Dave's meal is a fried egg on top. What can I say? I have eggs coming out my ears right now, as my chickens are so prolific.

I like to keep a blend of AP Flour and Cornmeal in a container in my fridge. If I fry bacon, chicken or chops I will make a little gravy using that flour/cornmeal mixture. With some fresh garden tomato's you have a meal fit for a king.

I love your videos. I love listening to your stories and always look to see what soft drink you're going to have with your meal. You're a great cook who knows his way around the kitchen, very knowledgeable about food and its history and a lot of fun to watch while learning these recipes but it really hurt to see a metal spatula being used to stir the gravy in a cast iron pan. I've seen you use a wooden spatula in other videos so it was puzzling that you didn't use it here.

I bet it tastes better with cornmeal tbh. Corn meal adds a corn flavor to stuff you can't get with flour. That is why corn tortillas taste good and flour tortillas are bland af. Personally I don't use wheat flour unless I need the gluten for a recipe. It's the blandest of all options imo. If I need to thicken something and neutral flavor isn't needed I'll use massa or coconut flour depending on the region and culture of the dish. If I don't need gluten but need a neutral flavor I'll go with a bean starch or something. Wheat Flour should be reserved for baked breads that require gluten
