Wendi gives the best facial expressions whenever she tastes something from her garden. I love her for that because I can look at her and tell if something really tastes good or not and her expressions are entertaining😊

Hahaa My expressions can be a little "extra" sometimes, but it certainly doesn't lie.

THANK YOU for trying and videoing the tubers. I've been interested in them for a while now but this video has motivated me to go dig some up and try. I'm in Australia so these are weedy for sure

This crop in the right hands will really enjoy it as it gives soooo much food! Just be mindful that it can get invasive. Happy gardening!

I agree. We need KZfaq videos on the medicinal side of it.

We grew this in the ground once and it climbed up our patio and up to the roof in 1 season! We ate the leaves but not the tuber, the flowers were pretty and fragrant. Then we decided to remove it after that year because it grew out of control. That was 8 years ago... To this day, it still spring up every spring because we left some tubers behind. In Chinese, it is called田七 or三七. I think it is on a cooling side and should not be over consumed. According to many web literatures, pregnant women should refrain from their diet.
@wendiland6 ай бұрын
This plant is a false 田七. Most people call it that because it produces 田七 looking bulbs, but the actual name is 落葵薯. It does grow like crazy! I am going to keep it in a container and a smaller trellis...just need to find space for that. Definitely going to remove it from the arch though.

@@wendiland thank you for the clarification, i might just let the next one grow and eat the leaves, they do taste like malabar spinach.

After the comparison to okra, I knew it wasn't for me, even before that with the whole slimey bitter thing.🤢 At least I know now it's not something I would waste garden space on. Thanks for sharing. ❤

Survival training taught me that a lot of vegetation is edible. But that doesn't mean it will taste good.

Very interesting! I am definitely not a "gelatin" "foamy" texture person... so will likely avoid those parts. The other aspect is that it seems to be a lot of work to get it to clean off well. Looking forward to the next video!

always love it when people say i don''t know how much of this you can eat raw safely but uh ill give it a shot hahaha
@wendiland6 ай бұрын
haha It sounded sketchy, but some people do eat them raw, I just don't know the volume they are ingesting so it's not like i'm going in blindly. Some food are meant to be cooked for safe consumption.

" Gelatinous" and "bitter" and "foaming in my mouth" when describing the raw tuber, made me think of saponins. I.e. it set off alarm-bells. So I briefly looked at the Wiki page, is it the rhizone or the bulbilis? The latter are described as hazardous. Anyway, I'd stick to eating the leaves cooked. Not sure what the bulbilis contain, but personally, I'll stay away from those hanging things and/or the underground taters. Leaves look good.

Yeah, I read that they are "inedible". And poisonous things often taste bitter.

Interesting to see but as you say it's invasive. Here in Australia, it's a noxious weed that destroys native vegetation by growing over it and blanketing out the light. Anyone in an area that only ever gets light frosts should probably check with their local authorities and maybe solarize any material that will end up offsite. Sorry for sounding negative, but better to know than not.

Education is absolutely important! I appreciate your comment. This is not a plant for a garden that doesn't get maintained regularly. Of course for certain climate that favour this plant would need to be extra careful.

What zone does it grow in? Is it a perennial?
@wendiland6 ай бұрын
I'm in zone 10, grows year round. Colder places need to test them outdoor, but can definitely bring them inside, or keep in greenhouse. Bulbs are easy to regrow each year.

How to plant it and when or what season? Thank you so much

Plant it in spring, or after the last frost date. Can start indoor as well. This video will explain more about the growing aspect: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lb9ohq6EmLHLiok.html :)

How old is this plant ready to start harvesting the root tubers? Thank you. God bless you
@wendiland6 ай бұрын
I have not paid attention to that since I only just learned about the tubers recently. Growers did say they can harvest after the year is finished. These are growers that live in colder climate. They keep the bulbs or tubers to regrow the following year.
