At age 70, it seems I still learn something each day...great harvest!!!.....potatoes are heavy feeders yet I did not see you added anything but the leaves and compost type soil....it will not be long until time to plant here in East Tennessee. My dad always planted potatoes on Good Friday and we had enough crop to make a potato (tater Hill) for Winter storage. I am always looking for easier ways.....you got my Sub...thanks!!

Thank You so very much. These potatoes are a early variety so worm casting are great for them. We know today the bacteria and fungi make plant available nutrients so they eat sand , silt and clay and release it to the plant

I use milk crates with the cardboard tray that cases of cat and dog food cans come in, at the bottom of crate, line the sides of crate with any cardboard. Gets lots of potatoes and easy to move without box falling apart. Potatoes really seem to like growing in cardboard. I mix organic straw or hay in with the soil.

Mark, I got 50 lbs of grade B red potatoes last fall. Ate some, canned some, dehydrated some. Took the last 8 lbs or so and put them in cold storage. Around March 1st I remembered them. Well! Was I shocked. Some of them had eight inch sprouts! We planted them in gallon containers with good soil/compost. Kept them inside until May. Put them out a little too early so lost seven to frost. When we planted them they already had potatoes the size of golfballs on them. None the less we got a lot of very large potatoes. Vines had withered so we harvested them early. They are so delicious! They are easy to canso I'm going to can a lot of them. Yours look exactly like ours. I am thinking perhaps the grade Bs are not sprayed with sprout inhibitor as they are not sold in stores as the Grade A. Congrats to you!

Most of the spuds we grow are in a partnership with some cool folks, and then there are some in the garden. There are a few volunteers, some in compost, and some in some quad tires as an experiment. I'm switching to boxes next year. Gotta love it man. I'm that way about the zuccs, butternuts, and pumpkins that were off to a brutal start, but the toughest are exploding right now. Fair bit of rain and warm temps starting with the best spring in several years.

I use big planter pots and got quite a few purple potatoes, the purple ones usually don’t get that big. However, I’m going to use your cardboard box method because the worms love it and make lots of castings underneath. I had laid down cardboard on the walkway in my key hole raised garden and I lifted it up to search for slugs 🐌 and it was filled with worms and castings….and about 20 slugs 🐌 lol 😂. When should I plant potatoes in Massachusetts? Potatoes may be planted as soon as the ground can be worked in the early spring, but keep soil temperatures in mind. Potato plants will not begin to grow until the soil temperature has reached 45 degrees F. The soil should be moist, but not water-logged.

Ok, I'm sold. I'm not so happy with the flooding here in the California valley. I'm waiting for news to bug-out while longing to get my potatoes in the ground. I notice the store potatoes you planted were in pristine condition, so I'm going to reject the organic ones that they sell at my local box store which look wrinkled and dark in color. This will be my first year planting a large amount of potatoes, so I hope to harvest enough for bartering. The California valley farmer's corps were flooded this year, so everyone seems to forget how to grow food in their own backyard. Sign of the times will only get worse.

Potatoes grown in full sun or partial sun? 2. Water, once a week? Hilling, how many weeks after you plant them? Only do these 1 time? 3. How long do you let them grow until you harvest them? Again I'm sorry if you mentioned it in the videos I must of missed it. Im viewing all your potatoes videos now. So excited to start this year

That last one really had lots of potatoes on it. It seems the red ones got less per plant; about 5 or 6, although I do love the red ones when I'm making potato salad or steaming them and cutting them in chunks to eat with butter. I think I'll try this with red ones and some sort of baking variety. I don't know about using my native soil because my dog got very sick from some microbes in it after rooting around in some mulch in my back yard. I'll definitely get some of those worm castings and some other soil that is bagged. It may be cleaner. Can other vegetables be grown in cardboard boxes like this?

You should move the chips out of the way to get to the soil below.. Just plan first where you wish to grow your vegs next year first. So lets say you wish to grow squash . Just move back a foot wide path and plant the winter rye. And leave the other chips in place. If you feel the winter rye will be hard to terminate in the spring you can use just any type clover also. Much easy to terminate
